I highly recommend Aerospace[1], went through a few approaches, I cared about not completely compromising security either, it works really well if you come from something like i3

comboy··on Can I run AI locally?
What is the $/Mtok that would make you choose your time vs savings of running stuff locally?

Just to be clear, it may sound like a snarky comment but I'm really curious from you or others how do you see it. I mean there are some batches long running tasks where ignoring electricity it's kind of free but usually local generation is slower (and worse quality) and we all kind of want some stuff to get done.

Or is it not about the cost at all, just about not pushing your data into the clouds.

Under this name or not I think it's happening regardless..
comboy··on Kotlin creator's new language: a formal way to talk to LLMs instead of English
Limited precision of float numbers is deterministic. But there's whole parallelism and how things are wired together, your generation may end up on a different hardware etc.

And models I work with (claude, gemini etc) have the temperature parameter when you are using API.

comboy··on Returning to Rails in 2026
I agree, but let's say you are looking for a library to solve your problem - you see one repo updated 2 weeks ago and the other one updated 5 years ago - which one do you choose?

Oh how I despise these suggestions. You sometimes look for a way to express something and you are on the verge of giving the world something truly original, but as soon as your brain sees the suggestion it goes "oh yeah that fits"

My broken english now officially bumps my comments up instead of down. Sweet.
comboy··on Microscopes can see video on a laserdisc
Just post it to social media to generate the text description for free (multiple humans in parallel work better)
comboy··on Why it takes you and an elephant the same amount of time to poop (2017)
If that sounds fun, you gonna love the story of Joy Milne who can smell the Parkinson's disease.
comboy··on MacBook Neo
I can open iphone on my macbook? Wish I had it working on my macbook pro, because I was supposed to be able to do that a long time ago (I'm in EU).
comboy··on A Chinese official’s use of ChatGPT revealed an intimidation operation
Get list of your inputs mixed with generated ones and ask some model to tell you which ones are yours.

Other than that the approach in general is weak, most people likely generate lots of noise themselves. It's just about that one time you asked about X.

comboy··on What Claude Code chooses
What kind of tools do you have on your mind specifically? My experience is that LLM can create me a decent dev tool that I wouldn't ever bother making so nice myself.
comboy··on “Car Wash” test with 53 models
The Internet has became a big mafia game.

Now do a set of queries and try to deduce by statistics which model are you seeing through Rapidata ;)
comboy··on Terminals should generate the 256-color palette
I don't know any GUI that beats tmux work portability.

Of course everything depends on exact nature of the work, but personally I would gladly leave text based interfaces behind, it's just that there's nothing better.

comboy··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
Yeah, I think the company that opens up a bit of the black box and open sources it, making it easy for people to customize it, will win many customers. People will already live within micro-ecosystems before other companies can follow.

Currently everybody is trying to use the same swiss army knife, but some use it for carving wood and some are trying to make some sushi. It seems obvious that it's gonna lead to disappointment for some.

Models are become a commodity and what they build around them seem to be the main part of the product. It needs some API.

comboy··on Show HN: Sameshi – a ~1200 Elo chess engine that fits within 2KB
I'd call that cheating but the size and capability is impressive nonetheless.

This argument works against any new thing. Yes it is totally different than the thing that happened before and perhaps something that has never happened before, I don't deny that at all.

Perception of new things stays relatively constant over the years though.

comboy··on ai;dr
yeah the idea is not new at all:

There there, remember when all images were hand painted? (me neither)

And I know it's different, but I'm surprised the overall sentiment is so pessimistic on HN. So maybe we will communicate through yet another black box on top of hundreds of existing ones already. But probably mostly when seeking specific information and wanting to get it efficiently. Yes this one is different, it makes human contact over text much more difficult, but the big part of all of this was happening already for years and now it's just widely available.

When posting on HN you don't see the other person typing like using talk command on unix, but it is still meaningful.

Ideally we would like to preserve what we have untouched and only have new stuff as an option but it's never been like this. Did we all enjoy win 3.11? I mean it was interesting.. but clicking.. so inefficient (and of course there are tons of people who will likely scream from their GUIs that it still is and windows sucks, I'd gladly join, but we have our keyboard bindings, other operating systems, and get by somehow)

Fun, I'd make playback speed something like 5x or whatever feels appropriate, I think nobody truly wants to watch those at 1x.

Well since you have these IDs, for national security (AML, criminals and whatnot), we will need you to keep them if our endpoint says so, here's the endpoint

I think it's kind of past the point of wondering what somebody can and cannot do according to the law? There used to be the constitution and stuff.
comboy··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
I've been wondering about that yesterday quite a bit, I've came to the conclusion that a big part is kind of anti-China sentiment on HN. I think the discussion would be quite different if we were talking about instagram reels/youtube shorts.

Plus there seem to be not many users, most crowd here gets dopamine elsewhere (like coding), tiktok seems to be mostly associated with brain-rot and not learning and diving into new topics.

comboy··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
Sincerely want to understand it, now that there's more comments it seems I'm not the only one but in minority. Currently most interesting dimension to me is how big part of HN is effectively against open access to information and supporting censorship but of course within this discussion context that's me misrepresenting those people who only want to save lives.

Suriously though, decent part of posters probably were around when WWW was effectively born. Tell me it was not addictive and not full of harmful content. I'm pretty happy it was not banned despite, unlike TV, providing personalized information that you were seeking.

comboy··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
OK, but is it a problem if you get recommended repos on github? What I mean that perhaps it's not the good recommendation algorithm that is the problem? It seems like banning tcp/ip because porn is bad.

In China for example (IIRC) below 18 you cannot use these apps past some hour and not above some time limit per day. That seems far from correct solution but seems better than banning it outright and seems to be addressing most concerns.

Personalized content is crucial for functioning information platforms. Imagine if usenet had a single group only. The information sea is vast and the ways to browse and access it seem to only be diminishing. Relaying solely on LLMs outputs does not seem like a safe bet. We've been living off black boxes outputs since altavista, but it's nice to at least have many different black boxes to chose from.

(HN is very much a FYP, it's just that.we like similar stuff)

comboy··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
People do get addicted to bikes. Not even questionable. But of course that's not a charitable interpretation, and on that - yes I don't think personalized content is comparable to heroin. What is so evil about personalized content?

I'm sincerely trying to understand. Your whole argument here is based on the premise that TV is OK because it's not personalized.

comboy··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
I'm too late but I'm surprised HN crowd treats tiktok as some weaponized addiction machine. Youtube used to have a working recommendation system and it was usable too. Is it really bad to give me woodworking and learning chinese videos if that's what I'm interested in at the moment? If somebody is not interested in anything specific and just want to zone out, is it really different if he scrolls through tiktok or watches the same thing put into longer videos on TV or some other site? I see zero rational argument being made here. Should we ban bikes if they are the most efficient transportation mode in given area because people get addicted to them?

$20? These networks do not try to hide your location and triangulating known frequencies is trivial.
