colund··on Photography is not just about the camera
Most DSLR/mirror less cameras have auto/P mode where you can basically point and shoot and get a picture with better background blur, details, low light performance and less noise than smart phones

Smart phones have smaller sensors and not as good lenses as for example full frame cameras.

colund··on Ask HN: Which movie(s) best represent hacker culture for you?
Mr Robot is somewhat interesting (at least season 1)
colund··on Ask HN: Where do you hang out virtually online?
Interesting to see more people who used to hang out on ##java on Freenode. That channel was horrendous back in the day with uncool admins who took pride in insulting people who were asking normal questions

These days I actually mostly hang out on Facebook Groups discussing interests like photography and music.

I also hang out on tech slack servers and have many Discord servers open. The problem I see with Discord is I join many servers that I never return to but sometimes don't leave due to FOMO :).

colund··on To learn a new language, read its standard library
A library like Java Collections API sometimes uses optimizations involving bitshift etc which is too confusing for most application level code. So your comment that it's not an anti-pattern to do such things in application code is something I have to disagree with.

colund··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
- Treatment will have improved so that it will be rare to die from cancer.

- Self-employment will be more popular than working in large open offices in large corporations.

- Large investments in AI corporations due to inflated beliefs will result in a new bubble in similar scale as the millenium IT bubble or the 2008 financial crisis.

- Immigration debates will create new tensions and will make political correctness come back similar to the reverse sexual-revolution after #metoo. Both auto-adjustments are beneficial for the stability of society.

- It will become popular to learn to play real instruments again. People will be tired of rap music and lack of creativity. It will become more popular to play classical music and jazz.

- Companies will start to offer fridays off for people to work on their personal projects or take time to recover or exercise.

- Countries outside of EU will copy the concept of GDPR to protect their citizens' data.

- Screen addiction (Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram...) will be considered as a major problem in society and people will be encouraged to socialize, mate, do exercise and play music instead.

colund··on Let's do this again. Predictions for the 2020s
1. I think the biggest change was that almost everyone got addicted to their phone screens and Facebook and got connected all over the world. I know Facebook is pre 2010 but I think it really took off with the use of smartphones.

2. I think the biggest things of significance is that treatment of cancer will improve even more and global warming will be acknowledge as a fact by most people. It will be more common to work as self-employed (often from home) rather than in big corporate open offices.

3. N/A

colund··on Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and Happy New Year
Merry Christmas!

Don't worry about a thing people write here on HN! Stay positive and be happy and successful! Keep coding and making the world a better and more fun world!

colund··on Ask HN: Why don't more people know about Freenode?
I my experience Freenode has lots of aholes like the admins in ##java who just want to insult people who join, asking them to Google everything, Tia's (try it yourself) and ban people who try to help since it ruins their feeling of power. Very toxic, so I would recommend everyone to stay away.
colund··on Ask HN: How do big software companies maintain high engineering standards
I think any great company regardless of size benefits greatly from an open culture which encourages trust and learning and balances throughout and quality with (agile) processes and retrospectives, planning, collaboration/pair programming, code reviews and ambition to do a great job and create value through good products and services.
colund··on Ask HN: How Can I Learn Music Theory?
Lear to play chords and scale modes based off of C major. Raise and lower notes and see what happens. Read any book or website on music theory. It's not rocket science. I meanmajor/minor scales have 7 notes. And there are only 12 notes in different octaves to choose from and combine in pleasing ways. Don't limit yourself by theory but study it to grow.

I recommend studying the basics in any book and also watch Barry Harris on YouTube when you understand the basics to get some cool a-ha moments. https://youtu.be/F8JJncSUdUU

colund··on Working Remotely While Traveling: A How to Guide
This is great. I love the idea of remote work. At the same time I am picky about my environment. I prefer to put my laptop on a clean surface and be able to work where it's quiet and beautiful. I am not sure that a café is that place for me, although I enjoy them a lot.

colund··on The Product-Minded Software Engineer
In my opinion this kind of engineer sounds great on paper.

I personally much prefer working with people who put data before their ego and work towards the goals of the team and the business - and challenge only when there are reasons to do so -and avoid debates and the illusion of knowing what's best for the user in every situation.

colund··on Ask HN: Anyone here wanna collab on a SaaS project
I am also interested in a SaaS collab. Preferably bootstrapped since I believe in product/founder/market fit and honest evaluation via MVPs.

I've quit my day job and am going solo full time in February after 17 years as an employed/consultant backend dev and in recent years mobile developer. I have several ideas that I will evaluate but am also open for other projects.

I could drop you an email to connect.

Exciting times ahead!

colund··on Ask HN: Can an introvert build a successful tech career/company?
I would recommend you to check out the Startups for the rest of us podcast with Rob Walling - an introvert and successful serial entrepreneur who founded Drip, Microconf, Tinyseed and wrote the book Start small, stay small. It can be done. The world needs introverts!
colund··on Ask HN: What programming language you use the most at work?
Kotlin for Android development.
colund··on Notes on Superhuman’s Acquisition Loops
Superhuman has been invite only for years, apparently to be able to choose their users and grow via word of mouth. Respectfully, why is a supposedly fast amazing email experience worth paying for? I might've missed something...
colund··on Ask HN: Hired to do one thing and one thing only around tech?

colund··on Are there some disadvantages to working remote?
Glass ceiling?
colund··on Are there some disadvantages to working remote?
Cons: From what I've read it seems that some people isolate themselves from others and just work in isolation and become depressed and lose care in personal hygiene and interests.

Pros: I'm interested in remote work since it appears to offer flexibility, control, possibility to choose to work with fun ambitious people and hopefully no open office disturbances.

colund··on Anthrax Guitarist Turned Master Watchmaker (2012)
And I quote

"Time has always been part of my music. Consider the song “Got the Time”… Time has always been part of my life and it will never go away since it is a wonderful remembrance of my Pop-Pop. Sadly, everyone has the time on their phone today and timekeepers have shifted from a need to an extreme luxury."

colund··on Ask HN: How to organize personal knowledge?
Focus on learning only a few things and get really good a them. That reduces the need to organise anything.
colund··on Ask HN: How to work remotely ergonomically?
Buy a chair, a desk you can raise, a good sharp display with usb-c connection and a usb hub, a nice low profile keyboard and a nice computer mouse.

colund··on Ask HN: What's something I can do with a spare, modern laptop?
Install Linux and attempt to do advanced stuff that just work in Windows and Mac but requires tweaking Linux. Spend hours looking for solutions on the Internet. Then brag about your achievements online.
colund··on Is it illegal to lie on your resume?
I just don't understand why people would want to get a job they pretend to be qualified for in the resume just to get a hell trying to compensate for the lacks of skil/knowledge. Money is not worth it. Having a stable life is much better than trying to live based on a lie.
colund··on Ask HN: How do you take care of your eyes?
Keep the display at a level below eye level. Also look at something far away to give the eyes some rest.
