collabs··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
And that's ok. We need an option, it doesn't need to be the only option.
collabs··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
In my opinion, the only solution is everyone (individuals as well as corporations) gets a direct account with the federal reserve as long as you can associate a taxpayer identification with the account. Using it is voluntary but it is free of cost, paid for by taxes, and moving money to and from accounts is free of cost. Depositors would get the same overnight interest rate that banks do, and this interest is added every day. I think if we could make this happen, the chokehold of Mastercard and Visa can be greatly diminished. The disintermediation of commercial banks, the loss of credit card perks, and the added cost of customer service should be an acceptable cost of removing the parasites visa and master card from our economy.

most importantly, this opens up a lot of money that the federal reserve can hold directly, something that will become more and more important as bond yields go sky high.

collabs··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
It was cheaper than it is now after the AI stuff. I don't think people buying and using computers makes them expensive. Your anger is misplaced.

Be angry instead at companies who won't even comply with the most ridiculously basic laws. They are the ones causing all those problems.

collabs··on O&O ShutUp10 – The antispy tool for Windows 10 and 11
Yes, antivirus is still required but as long as you have decent common sense, the built in antivirus and antimalware on Windows (sometimes known as Windows Defender or Windows Security) is good enough for most users (the only use case where I can see commercial AV solution being of any use is for compliance checklists). Chocolatey, Winget, and Scoop are all good options for installing software.

Oh and you will love Powershell 7 on Windows Terminal. It is a delight and a breath of fresh air if you ask me.

collabs··on .name Termination
Should Google be allowed to keep Google dot lol if it doesn't do anything useful with it? What about Google dot wtf? Any person with two brain cells would say these domains should belong to a fervent critic of Google, not to Google.

Sadly neither our world not its legal system is built on common sense.

I sincerely believe I've never had a single original thought™ in my whole life.

There is this scene in the HBO series Westworld where a "host" says some words in sequence which is shown on a display as she says it. Of course, even me thinking of this scene and connecting it to your comment was not original, someone else clearly had the same programming as me.

A medium blog post says

> Pair what with me?” — the moment Maeve (a humanoid android) uttered those words in Westworld (Season 1, Episode 6: “The Adversary”), something clicked. Not for the average viewer, but for me, a STEM educator and AI enthusiast who, just weeks earlier, had read Stephen Wolfram’s seminal essay, What Is ChatGPT Doing … and Why Does It Work?

collabs··on Just Bury Your Trash
What I left unsaid to be polite was if they missed/hand waved something that even I know, what else is missing from this analysis? It feels like a gross oversimplification of a very real, very multifaceted problem.
collabs··on Just Bury Your Trash
> By contrast, there is no danger of running out of paper. We can always grow more trees, and that is in fact a decent way of removing carbon from the atmosphere. The silicon used to make glass is one of the most abundant elements on Earth.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I understand, not all sand is created equal. Desert sand, like in the Sahara Desert, is eroded by wind. The smooth, round, and tiny grains are practically useless for both construction concrete and high-grade glassmaking. We want something called silica sand. Moreover, while industrial sand may be abundant worldwide, the same localized shortages that we face with petroleum or cobalt (from the article) also apply to sand.

collabs··on Show HN: I missed the moving blocks, so I built a real Linux disk defragmenter
I have a question about disk defragmenter. I've asked a couple of people before and they've said it is not possible but iirc if I stated disk defragmenter and then even so much as moved the mouse after it started it would start with the first boxes again. Do you remember this too?
collabs··on Review: Chuwi's $449 Unibook laptop is a funhouse-mirror MacBook Neo
I have not tried it myself and I'm skeptical of reviewers on the topic of touchpad. I remember sitting next to someone who seemed to be using Photoshop in a MacBook professionally like literally making fine edits with a cursor more than ten years ago.

While I'm sure our track pads have gotten better, I doubt we have reached the level of Apple's track pads.

I don't know how much of an accolade I can give a USD 2k+ device for having almost the same trackpad experience as a USD 999 MacBook.

collabs··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
For those like me who don't have context, here is the New York Times article on this recent news / event

https://archive.fo/e8Gss

> The State Department on Wednesday designated three groups based in Europe, including two that advocate Palestinian rights, as transnational terrorist organizations.

> The move is part of the Trump administration’s fight against what it calls a “resurgence of far-left political terrorism” worldwide, a focus that many security experts say is disproportionate.

> In a statement, the department said that it would impose sanctions on Palestine Action, which is based in Britain and organizes acts of support for Palestinians and opposition to Israeli policies; Masar Badil, another pro-Palestinian group with branches in Western Europe and Canada; and Autistici/Inventati, known as A/I Collective, which is based in Italy and offers free digital tools to leftist activists around the world.

a/I collective in the OP is the third on this list.

> based in Italy and offers free digital tools to leftist activists around the world

collabs··on Overcooked? Why robotic pizza makers are failing
The way I see it, the best way to serve is to remove all financial incentives.

My dream is a free of cost at the point of service Uber pool like service that takes you door to door in one of those Ford transit vans.

Over time, you learn patterns and put in mass public transit and the door to door vans then become door --> van --> public transit --> van --> door

At least that's my dream for the US where we are spread apart like this

collabs··on Copyright does not protect AI-generated content in EU
I am in favor of copyright reform so eventually it becomes something like two years automatic with a one time two year extension possible an I agree with you because of one key word — raw. Once the footage is used in a package, be it a movie, a news report, or a music video, that package can be copyrighted. The problem is there is no way the owner of a dashcam can prohibit commercial use of a video they own if it cannot be copyrighted in the US. In a way, we have conflated copyrights with other so called intellectual property (details). Maybe the solution is to strengthen privacy rights somehow? I'm not sure.

collabs··on Scientists stunned by children's lung recovery in ultra low emission zone
A quick note for my fellow US Americans -- A British speaker calling it 'pavement' is referring to what we call the sidewalk.
collabs··on Scientists stunned by children's lung recovery in ultra low emission zone
What is more amazing to me is I thought this wouldn't be localized. I thought we have on earth and one atmosphere but clearly not? Like the standard of living can wildly change if we change our own local area. We don't need people in Montreal or Paris to come up with a plan?

So unlike greenhouse gases, which can last in the atmosphere for years, seems like NO2 and particulates only stay in the air for less than a day or a few days. This is an amazing little fact because we can start small and call for meaningful reform where we live without requiring a global coordination. Maybe there will be a global consensus later but it doesn't matter because we can start making improvements today within our own local context. The bonus is we will likely also lower our own carbon footprint as we reduce our other emissions. I think this is the "selfish" breakthrough we need to convince people.

When I say it doesn't matter, I don't mean like cross border contamination does not happen but rather that we can improve our own lives with our own action regardless of what others do.

The obvious actionable thing that you can do for your own life is to stop using or being around gasoline or petrol powered two stroke engines such as in a leaf blower. But we can do more. We can completely ban these two stroke engines from being sold at all and that will bring meaningful improvements in weeks, not years.

The problem is to make more impact, we will need to actually get people to give up or retrofit their existing equipment. We will need to educate people about the harms that these things cause and why the change is good. However, in today's siloed world, I don't think it will be easy at all. So perhaps the most difficult part ironically in a very connected and yet siloed world is the marketing of this idea and connecting the required change in behavior with the benefits.

As we saw with the leaf blower example, the costs are concentrated, yes but so are the benefits! The benefits are NOT at all diffuse because guess who benefits the most from not inhaling in gasoline fumes? The person operating the leaf blower!

collabs··on Models Are Getting Dumber on Purpose
My motivation is somehow the model should be able to work without hitting an external resource every single time and somehow have all the knowledge necessary locally so we don't get rate limited but how can you stay up to date with the latest information while still remaining a good boy scout by not reaching out to tool use and scraping every single GitHub repo and issue every single time?

collabs··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
> The quality varied wildly depending on the department.

I feel like it has always been this way. I went to a small private university. The natural sciences and especially the pre-med students had their days fully packed, like the only time you could even have a moment to talk about anything was at the cafeteria during meals.

Then there was the business department. The college athletes apparently picked business as a major because you have to pick something. You couldn't guess what was their preferred minor and why... The overwhelming preferred minor was music because the buildings for department of business and music were adjacent.

Compare that to the pre meds who were always worried about getting a B and somehow "ruining their chances at med school".

I have a Motorola moto g stylus 2025. I have not altered the OS or installed a custom rom. I simply have not signed into Google yet. I use aurora store to download and install app updates from the play store. What I'm curious about is why some apps won't even open at all without a Google log in? Is there something in your app that requires a Google account?

On the contrary, strike! Refuse to have children completely until society and in particular the wealthy uphold their end of the bargain and make universal free of cost childcare a reality.

collabs··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
My pet peeve is that a full class A attestation is still not a requirement in 2026. The US FCC won't do it. I have no hope from the current administration. However, perhaps France is in a unique position to implement this. The idea is that all calls that have a domestic caller ID will be required to have full class A attestation and all carriers will be required by law to block any calls that do not have such full attestation. Any carrier that attests phone numbers that it is not supposed to should get huge fines and criminal charges. This is my dream for what all Telecoms in the world should do, hopefully beginning with France. This requires broad support within the country and a firm deadline so companies don't shrug it off until the last moment and then demand an extension.

collabs··on My server is a phone now
Can you please tell me more? I'm trying to build a self hosted application (with Claude) so people can scan a QR code and place orders / send messages to the kitchen without having to flag down a server / waiter. It is supposed to save time and money for the restaurant and for the patrons and customers it is supposed to be more convenient. Do you not like this option?

collabs··on BYOC Is Not Just 'Deploy into Their Cloud'
In my mind, BYOD is like being able to use my own iPhone or laptop to connect to some corporate network. I think of this "device" as a client and I think of byoc as being able to run some application or constellation of applications on my own device or in a vendor neutral way on some cloud like a podman compose or something similar... Like not dependant on a particular vendor's "native" capabilities

collabs··on Civilian plane crash in New Mexico tied to military GPS blocking
I don't know how to phrase it in military lingo but based on what I've read here on this thread, the military must stop these tests.

1. Use self contained "unit tests" or "dry runs" if you will for day to day scheduled or training purposes

2. Do precise (far fewer) "end to end" tests only where justified like for new hardware certification, never for shits and giggles

collabs··on Oracle cut its Always Free ARM limits to 2 OCPU / 12GB, enforced Aug 18
> Always Free - No credit card required, sign up. This is what the new limit applies to

I don't think this is true. I just tried to sign up and it says

----

Payment/Identity Verification - You will not be charged

You won’t be charged for using OCI Free Tier. If you choose to upgrade your account to Paid tier, you will only be charged for services used over your Always Free limits. If you don’t upgrade your account to Paid tier, you will continue to have access to Always Free services.

You may see a small, temporary charge on your payment method. This is a verification hold that will be removed automatically. See the FAQ for more information.

We recommend double-checking all the information before submitting the form since some info is automatically filled.

Oracle does not accept any virtual, prepaid or single use cards in payment verification.

Debit cards that have a logo (for example, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express) and don't require a PIN number can be used to sign up for a free Oracle Cloud Account.

----

So it does require a credit card for sign up.

collabs··on Bending Spoons makes first post-IPO acquisition with $1.3B Airtable deal
I don't think this is quite accurate. The main question is how much revenue does Sortable bring in each year and after all expenses, how much cash flow does Airtable generate for its owners every year? I am positive it is nowhere near a billion dollars a year. If we roughly say it is annual recurring revenue of USD 0.5B a year, now the question is how much can bending spoon choke airtable neck forcing it to reduce expenses without meaningfully reducing revenue.
