colinng··on Repairing an HP 3478A Multimeter with a Hacksaw
Also for bad contacts in old devices (or for the removable battery in my eBike), MG Chemicals conductive grease works wonders. And you can keep everything “original”. For zebra conductors I would try applying a very thin layer of the grease to the copper pads (after cleaning them with a pencil eraser) to assure only conduction along the desired path.
colinng··on Counterfeiting Stock – Explaining illegal naked shorting and stock manipulation
I always thought that shorting was a disgusting practice, and wondered, “who buys a share, and lends it out so someone can manipulate it and lower its value, and profit from it”?

It never occurred to me the majority of the “lending” did not actually happen.

colinng··on Project Kuiper's custom-built antenna architecture
I wonder when it’ll be commercially available.
colinng··on Scientists identify microbe that could help degrade polyurethane-based plastics
I prefer we not engineer bugs to rot our plastics. The problem is not that plastics are durable. The problem is humans are shortsighted and have not developed systematic thinking and processes to prevent waste.

We need plastics. Durable, rot-resistant, waterproof, light, strong, malleable, easy to cast into different shapes.

But we as a species do not reuse and recycle enough, and even throw plastics into the ocean or into compost bins.

How about we get to the root of the problem, instead of apply bandaid atop of bandaid?

Reduce, reuse, recycle. Repair, repurpose, reclaim (put money into cleaning up our oceans?), rethink (do we need individually wrapped produce?) etc.

colinng··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
Aeroscope. Probably the nicest portable oscilloscope I've seen. It fizzled away, and until CrowdSupply found a few units, I couldn't even buy a spare for just in case.

colinng··on “I created Steve Bannon's psychological warfare tool”: data war whistleblower
It was very easy for me to take this personally, and become indignant. "What, a CANADIAN took money to actively sow discord, who helped maximize the impact of spreading lies to ruin the harmony between people and nations, for the benefit of his very wealthy, dare I say evil, overlords???"

Complete antithesis to what I deem as "appropriate use of information technology."

But the flip side is now he is indignant, brooding, guilty. At least he knows he did the wrong thing. But it would take a lot of effort to undo that. Maybe Brexit can't be undone. Maybe Trump changing the laws to promote rampant racism, can't be undone.

Let this be a lesson to the next generation of technically inclined persons: you can fool everyone, maybe even yourself, but is Brexit or Trump worth the paltry crumbs that the overlords left you so they could rake in billions? Or more simply, "are you a tool?"

There are better ways to use your ability, and countless ways to make a living. Be mindful of what you do in earning your keep.
