colinbartlett··on The Serverless Revolution Has Stalled
I’d be curious to see the data behind that claim that the hobbyist market is overwhelmingly PHP. I must not have any exposure to that ecosystem because PHP does not come to mind when I think of hobbyist development.
colinbartlett··on Several Apple Services Down
There have been quite a few high profile outages recently, although I don’t think correlated.

At the suggestion of several kind people here, I started publishing quarterly round ups of all the major outages on the StatusGator blog. We have lots of data about outages, though the last post took a mostly qualitative approach. Hopefully we can get more sophisticated with it in the future and be more quantitative, perhaps funding outages that affect or cause other outages.

One of my favorite nerdy YouTube channels, Techmoan, recently covered this format, too: https://youtu.be/X8568_3amO4

If you’re into analyzing obscure media formats, he has tons of them in his back catalog.

Related: World champion Magnus Carlson recently resigned a match after 4 moves as an act of honor because in his previous match with the same opponent, Magnus won solely due to his opponent having been disconnected.
colinbartlett··on Apple showing signs it may soon launch a search engine
If privacy is the focus, could Apple acquire Duck Duck Go and get a head start? Or is there no reason to get a head start when you have virtually unlimited resources?
colinbartlett··on Zoom Partial Outages
That's interesting. My side project, StatusGator, monitors and aggregates status pages and I've been wondering recently if we should target the education... and how to.

We've had a handful of school district customers sign up recently and use us to build aggregated status pages or send notifications to teachers and administrators when Zoom (or Blackboard or whatever) is down. So there seems to be a use case there beyond the "DevOps" market we currently cater to.

colinbartlett··on Show HN: Q2 2020 Outage Report
Hi all! A few months ago someone on HN here recommended we use all the data we're gathering at StatusGator to produce a quarterly report, kind of like Backblaze does: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23471993

I thought it was a great idea! So we got to work. This is the result of that effort, although this attempt is not as data-driven as I first imagined. It turns out that I'm really no data scientist and couldn't quite figure out how to get insights from our data.

So instead I took a more human approach and tried to keep it light. I'm not here to shame anyone after all.

I would love your feedback along with what you'd want to see in a Q3 report.

colinbartlett··on Gmail and Google Drive Outage
Follow up to that: Does anyone know if there are tools to help customers collect and submit data to their their vendors for SLA credits?

I’d like to add something like that to StatusGator but I’m unsure if there’s a market.

Nice! Looks very similar to my side project, StatusGator[1]. I can tell you that status page aggregation is a hard challenge. I have lived and breathed this for more than 5 years now.

colinbartlett··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Has anyone here ever met anyone who loves Jira?
colinbartlett··on Has GitHub been down more since its acquisition by Microsoft?
That's correct, this was only our blog. We've only just recently begun an effort to publish more frequent and more interesting content. Although OP's point is fair.
colinbartlett··on GitHub was down
Site is back. Thank you, Cloudflare.
colinbartlett··on Has GitHub been down more since its acquisition by Microsoft?
I can't reproduce, would you mind emailing me a screenshot of this? (I'm the author) colin at any of the domains in my bio.

Yep, sorry about that. Here's a cache link:

colinbartlett··on Has GitHub been down more since its acquisition by Microsoft?
Sorry... we probably should have put a CDN in front of our humble Linode box earlier. Here's a cache link:

Edit: Cloudflare seems to be working now. Wow, that was really easy to setup.

colinbartlett··on Has GitHub been down more since its acquisition by Microsoft?
Author here, just put a CDN in front of the blog so maybe that will help.
colinbartlett··on GitHub was down
If you’re wondering if GitHub has been down more since the Microsoft acquisition, I actually just recently did some analysis on that using their status page data (the answer is yes):

colinbartlett··on Ask HN: When will we have mobile browser extensions and ad-blocking?
I’ve been using Purify on iOS since the content blocking APIs were released. It seems to do a great job, no complaints. Am I missing something?
colinbartlett··on IBM Cloud was down, as well as their status page
Do you actually have data on that or are you conjecturing? Because I would really love to see data about that if it exists somewhere.
colinbartlett··on IBM Cloud was down, as well as their status page
Thanks and that's a GREAT idea for some detailed analysis. I have been trying to make better use of the 5+ years of status page history stashed in the cupboard.
colinbartlett··on IBM Cloud was down, as well as their status page
My side project StatusGator monitors status pages (including IBM's ill-fated page) and I'm seeing more than 10% of the nearly 800 services we monitor having an outage right now.

So it appears to affect anyone who depends on IBM Cloud.

colinbartlett··on Ask HN: If you could work remote where would you live?
I work remotely and live in NYC. Honestly, I cannot imagine living anywhere else. Present conditions notwithstanding, I believe New York to be an ideal place to base oneself. The connivence to both everyday needs, world-class food, culture, and yes, employers, is unparalleled. And on top of that, there is perhaps no better place in the US from which to explore the world.

People say it's expensive but they act as if you get nothing in return for what you pay, which is certainly not the case.

colinbartlett··on Ask HN: Do you still use MongoDB?
No. I only ever used it previously for things like logging unstructured API responses. Now I just shove that kind of stuff into PG JSONB.
colinbartlett··on Uber is laying off 3,700, as rides plummet due to Covid-19
If one can bill their time at $200/hour and it takes 30 minutes to go get a sandwich, is it lazy to pay someone $10 to do it for them or just good economics?
colinbartlett··on Ask HN: Why can't I send faxes from my phone?
I am amused and impressed that you chose an API and cURL to send a fax than any of the many apps and services built on top of that API.
colinbartlett··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
jodi.org was a delightful rabbit hole of pure art
colinbartlett··on A one-line package broke `npm create-react-app`
I’m working on a thing I’m calling DriftWatch that attempts to track, objectively, how far out of date you are on dependencies, which I call dependency drift. I’ve posted about it here before [1]. I’m using it in my consulting practice to show clients the importance of keeping up to date and it’s working well.

I agree with the parent that it’s important to lock to avoid surprises (in Ruby, we commit the Gemfile.lock for this reason), but it’s equally as important to stay up to date.

colinbartlett··on Federal Reserve slashes interest rates to zero
My "high interest" savings accounts already took a recent haircut and this will accelerate that. I understand that's the idea: make investing attractive and savings unattractive. But for a regular joe like me, this is exactly the time I want to be saving more so it stings.
