coldcode··on Apple Macintosh before System 7
I actually owned a prototype Mac II that I got from Apple when it was pre-production. The case was ... mostly missing. I borrowed a pre production color monitor and got our app to show graphics in color (I think 6 colors was all it could do) but it was amazing to see.
coldcode··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
When I was at Apple (before Steve returned, when it was going out of business), the employees got to pick their titles. Most were approved, but one woman wanted to be "Madonna of the File System", I think that was not. She did, however, know that code inside and out and deserved to get it.
coldcode··on Boston Dynamics robot Atlas goes hands on [video]
The video is impressive, but how does it learn? How long does it take before it can do something new? I realize this is still very much a research project, but I'd love to understand how it works.
coldcode··on ChatGPT Search
From other LLMs of course.

Which is the main issue I see with them, if no one publishes anything new, all you will get is whatever was there before, which may be incorrect or obsolete. If you want something new, an LLM can't discover it if no data source exists. So over time the LLM becomes useless for current information.

coldcode··on Implementing Brainfuck in APL
Implementing Brainfuck in APL should require doing it in cuneiform.
coldcode··on Diabetes Breakthrough: New Treatment Eliminates Insulin for 86% of Patients
Most people with T2D do not take insulin, it's only useful if your body cannot make a sufficient amount. In my case I have no need for it, the cells became resistant to the effects of insulin. 25% is probably a decent estimate.
coldcode··on Employees Describe an Environment of Paranoia and Fear Inside Automattic
Life is too short to work in such a toxic place. I've been in two of them; not having a job can be bad, but life goes on much more pleasantly when you get out.
coldcode··on Adobe's new image rotation tool is one of the most impressive AI tools seen
I won't be excited until its live in an app, company demos are always exciting.
coldcode··on Meta Movie Gen
Also, cost. How many do you have to generate to get something you want? Does it take 1 or a 100 attempts to get something reasonable, and what does it cost for each attempt? Might not affect Hollywood, but someone has to pay for this to be profitable for Meta. How many 5-Gigawatt power stations will be required (what OpenAI wants to build all over the country) if lots of people use this?
coldcode··on Code Generation in Rust vs. C++26
As an aside, having used C++ in the early 90s when it was first available in stand-alone compilers (rather than a preprocessor), it boggles my mind that we are seeing C++26.
coldcode··on Why strength training? A programmer's perspective
I gave up on exercise for 30 years before retiring as a programmer (after 40 years), and discovered all sorts of health issues last year. This year I routinely work out twice a week no matter what, and I feel great, all my health issues are under control. I was not overweight, but now I feel so much better with 13 lbs less, and actual muscle. I should have started 30 years ago instead of ignoring it. It doesn't have to be 7 days a week and hours a day to make a difference.
coldcode··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
Many of these are "Use AI For Something" startups. A few seemed meaningful but most seem destined to fail.
coldcode··on FFT-based ocean-wave rendering, implemented in Godot
Yeah I wondered how that could be done, otherwise this would only be good for backgrounds.
coldcode··on A 23-person Lego team built a 1:1 scale working McLaren P1 using 342,817 pieces
I didn't see how fast it could go. Did I miss it?
coldcode··on James Earl Jones has died
My favorite story from the CB radio era:

“I did that once when I was traveling cross-country. I used Darth as my handle on the CB radio. The truck drivers would really freak out — for them, it was Darth Vader. I had to stop doing that,” Jones told the Times magazine.

coldcode··on Things I Learned from Doing Triathlon in My 70s (2023)
I started working out at 66 this year for the first time since I stopped playing basketball 30 years ago. Even after 6 months I see a difference (I was never overweight 6'5" at 212 but now 10 pounds less). But because I had no experience with weight training or even cardio for so long, there is no way to expect I can do triathlons all of a sudden. I can tell who in the gym has been training most of their life and I have no expectations to suddenly look like Dwayne Johnson (he's 6'4").

I wish I had started and continued training at some level 30 years ago (or earlier) instead of waiting until now. I can only exhort people to not wait until they are old, and things start falling apart to start.

The author doesn't mention his experience before he turned 70, I think that would have been interesting.

coldcode··on Caltech Develops First Noninvasive Method to Continually Measure Blood Pressure
As a person who had a hypertensive crisis late last year, nothing boils my blood (yes, a pun, I am fine now) more than how people measure blood pressure incorrectly in doctors offices and even hospitals. There are many different things than can increase a BP measurement above the "baseline" including talking, moving around, not having rested but also just waking up, not being in a supported position, only a single value, etc. Most of the major health agencies (AMA,AHA,CDC, etc in the US) have recommendations on how to do it properly, but in medical situations like doctors offices and hospitals, these are rarely done as they take too much time. A single measurement is not sufficient and can result in misdiagnosis.

A more reliable way to measure a continuum would make a difference, but I imagine it would still require time to collect as BP is a dynamic value that changes with behavior, posture and activity.

coldcode··on Why many studies wrongly claim it's healthy to drink a little alcohol
People are working on it, but its a long way from being complete. See, for example, https://www.quantamagazine.org/with-digital-twins-the-doctor... on modeling the circulatory system.
coldcode··on A Swiss town banned billboards. Zurich, Bern may soon follow
In San Francisco it's common to not own a car, since parking is expensive and often not available and insurance is high also. At one point in the mid-90s I vaguely remember the ticket for parking illegally was less than the average parking space, until the city realized it. But SF is very small, so public transit/Uber/etc gives you many options to get around. Where I live now, if you have no car you go nowhere.
coldcode··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
Running Safari on MacOS (latest) I see in the console:

[Error] Could not connect to the server. [Error] Fetch API cannot load https://xp-qa.apple.com/report/2/xp_amp_web_perf_log due to access control checks. [Error] Failed to load resource: Could not connect to the server. (xp_amp_web_perf_log, line 0)

Looks like a beta bug.

coldcode··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
It's a early beta. It's not surprising to limit testing to what you know first.
coldcode··on Collection of Dark Patterns and Unethical Design
When I worked for an online travel agency a decade ago (now just a brand for you-know-who) we got lots of nasty emails about Spirit Airlines, as they were always the cheapest option in our flight booking, but after you booked you found out all the extra charges they required, none of which were given to us to add in the total price. So the price we showed was not the price you would likely ultimately pay (we always joked internally that they charged for air to breathe). But we got all the grief. Also, they had their own flight reservation system, and it was dog slow (at the time it could take more than a minute to make the actual booking).
coldcode··on Disney's Internal Slack Breached? NullBulge Leaks 1.1 TiB of Data
There isn't a single slack instance, nor is there a single IT organization. Disney is a huge company with many mostly autonomous divisions. I highly doubt they took everything as it would not be all in one place. I presume given the message it was likely the folks making movies or Disney+, not Parks. Of course, it could also be something much more benign.
coldcode··on The Forth Methodology of Charles Moore (2001)
It's a nice philosophy, but good luck doing this in a strict Scrum process.
coldcode··on Arm Accuracy Super Resolution
The one comparison example is sort of poor, as the "improved" part is bright, and the "original" part is dark and rather limited. It's hard to tell much from this.
coldcode··on HP discontinues online-only LaserJet printers in response to backlash
I believe there is an internet-enabled toothbrush, so why not? I refuse to buy a new TV as they are all internet-connected and ad-ready. There are a few offline ones or simple displays, but not so easy to find any more.
coldcode··on Leonhard Euler's Letters to a German Princess
Leonhard Euler discovered or was associated with so many mathematical/physics/etc concepts that people stopped naming them after him to keep from everything being Eulers'.

A 20th century mathematician with a similar problem was Paul Erdos.

coldcode··on Former Kansas bank CEO admits to embezzling $47M for crypto scheme
How do you get to be a bank CEO and fall for such a scam? Also, how do you hide $47M worth disappearing from your small bank without anyone noticing?
coldcode··on Eating meat with lower carbon footprint often means killing more animals
Fixing greenhouse gases requires focusing on the largest % contributors, not tiny little amounts. It's like optimizing code only used on startup instead of runtime. See https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/global-greenhouse-gas-overv...
coldcode··on Writing HTML by hand is easier than debugging your static site generator
Really, my art site has 1600 detail pages, and I wrote my own site generator (in Swift) for it. You think I would want to write all of them by hand?

Sure, I could have a dynamic site (ROR, or Express or whatever) but static is easier to serve, and changes are quickly diffed except once a month when the structure is updated.

If was just doing a small site, sure, but anything substantial requires something better.
