coldblues··on Nixpkgs: The big recipe book of open source
I have seen a lot of Nix threads on HN recently, awesome. I'm not using NixOS as my main OS, but I have set up a VM and am trying to contribute. I'm fairly certain that the biggest hurdles to Nix packaging are all the language package managers for languages like Haskell, Ruby, Python and NodeJS.

Other alternatives are Nix (or NixOS entirely) and Guix.

That's why you should be creating your own PKGBUILD.

coldblues··on Standard Notes
I prefer Notesnook a lot more. It's more polished than this. Really enjoyable to use.
coldblues··on Ask HN: Those with ADHD, how are you doing?
Well ADHD is not a lack of attention but a lack of control over your attention. And yeah, when I was really obsessed with something, I would spend the entire day doing it, and then the rest of the days until it lost its charm or I finished whatever I had planned. I always binge YT, anime, movies, manga, books. It's very hard to pry yourself off of them once you start. Sometimes it's just easier to finish it, but just don't dare start anything else because then you're back at the start.
coldblues··on Ask HN: Those with ADHD, how are you doing?
Live in the EU. Psychiatrists are highly uneducated on the the subject of ADHD, and amphetamine-based medication has the stigma of hard drugs. Getting diagnosed is possible but painful when you're always stigmatized and your problems disregard with bullshit reasoning. Psychiatrists who prescribe medication are also treated like drug traffickers and can easily land a jail sentence. Not to mention that medication is also hard to get.

I found out I had ADHD when I started really struggling and getting behind all of my responsibilities and was irrationally angry, agitated and hateful every waking moment of my life. Learning I had ADHD was a relief, but at the same time I feel awful knowing how we're treated.

I don't really deal with ADHD with some kind of routine. It just doesn't work. If I can force myself to work and my mind springs into action, that's great. If it doesn't, I'll try Modafinil or Nicotine. But otherwise, I just go with the waves. There isn't much to do, really.

In regards of relating to you, mood swings for me include spontaneous obsessions towards a subject. Hyperfixation and hyperfocusing on something. Obviously it had its benefits, but I've also been forced by my mind to do something that's was not really important at that time. Negative emotions are mostly constant rumination and intrusive thoughts, although those aren't a problem if I'm obsessing over something that makes me happy. I'm not particularly negative, but I prefer to have something to do if I can, otherwise I'm always stuck in my mind going over imaginary scenarios and ideas. I am also very sensitive to sound, especially. The house can burn down if I am hyperfocusing on something, I wouldn't even feel the skin peeling off of me. But if I am trying to focus on something that must be done, and you even breathe in the same room as me, I will proceed to fantasize about choking you to death.

My short-term memory can often times be peanuts. I frequently get mini panic attacks and check my pockets if I still have my phone and wallet with me.

On the topic of education, I have been traumatized by teachers and my parents. I couldn't even look through a math notebook without getting sick in the stomach. I still can't.

I also got quite bad anxiety from all the trauma and when I'm stressed I have double the constant mind noise. I'm always have a constant monologue with myself in the second person.

There's also this: https://write.sonnet.io/, which is awesome for "vomit writing".

And for something that's not made with web tech, I much prefer Ghostwriter.

coldblues··on Nix journey part 0: Learning and reference materials
My current objective is to make an easy and reproducible configuration + live image installer. I want to automate the whole process. As soon as I plug in the USB stick, my preferred defaults should do their work without user input.

Although, I really don't like Nix as a language. I really wish it would have used something like GNU Guile. Searching deep for nuggets of information isn't nearly as painful as the language itself. I might adapt to it in time, but still.

coldblues··on New research shows trolls don’t just enjoy hurting, they also feel good about it
A lot of the replies mention sociopathy, but couldn't this be something else? Maybe you are in the position where you aren't phased by provocations and find it weird how people are so easily negatively influenced. Essentially, when you provoke someone, you indeed put up an easy bait to provoke a reaction out of someone, and if they fall for it, you can assume that the person might not be acting logically or rationally most of their life. After all, how can something so simple enact such rage from someone, they must be crazy if they don't just ignore it, at least get mildly frustrated. Are they the sort of person to yell in the restaurant if someone forgets to put cream in their coffee? It could also be a method to differentiate between the seasoned gamers and those who are new to it. After all, banter and shit-talking was prevalent and you had to adapt to it to remain in that space, and before you knew it, you were part of it.
coldblues··on New research shows trolls don’t just enjoy hurting, they also feel good about it
Not arbitrary, indeed. Primarily verbal. Just throw offensive words at someone and see if they have an "instant allergic reaction" to them.
coldblues··on New research shows trolls don’t just enjoy hurting, they also feel good about it
Not exactly what I was referring to. The form I describe is more so to test if you are easily offended by those insults and are easily provoked. If you can find humor or bonding with those words, you can be part of the group, essentially differentiating them from those who are too emotional, easily provoked and quick to react negatively.
coldblues··on New research shows trolls don’t just enjoy hurting, they also feel good about it
I have to mention that there is also another form, or it may be different from trolling altogether, although it's not purely destructive in nature and it's more of a test, and I think an explanation will best describe what I mean.

There are online groups that will try to provoke people into giving them a reaction. You call people derogatory words and make them feel uncomfortable. If you can easily provoke a reaction out of them, they are outsiders unfit for the group you want them to partake in. If they react by "correctly" responding to those provocations either by insulting back in a joking manner, or directly referencing something regarding those words, you know that they're fit to be in your group.

I really hope there's other people in this thread who know about this practice.

coldblues··on New research shows trolls don’t just enjoy hurting, they also feel good about it
Unfortunately the term "troll" has indeed been muddled. Often times I see people use them so incorrectly. You speak to someone calmly and someone suddenly throws the world "troll" at you. Like "Yeah, ok, you're trolling."

I don't get it. How do you come to that conclusion? People with a different set of opinions than yourself would go out of their way to have a conversation with you, construct a neat and tidy identity, just to make you angry? And this is not even in political conversation, sometimes it's just that you have different preferences. In what communities is it so common to have people so obsessed that they construct fictional identities and weaponize a constructed set of beliefs they don't even associate with, just to piss someone off?

coldblues··on Pulsar – A Community-Led Hyper-Hackable Text Editor
Atom was unbelievably slow. How will the performance be improved? Visual Studio Code somehow managed to surpass the awful Electron performance just enough to make it usable, and it's pretty unbelievable this project will come close to that.
coldblues··on Ask HN: Dealing with ADHD Without Medication?
Can we look back on this disorder and take in how truly awful it is to live with it?

For most of your life, people call you lazy, inattentive, annoying.

You try to keep up with schoolwork/work/taxes/chores/XYZ but the activity makes you want to vomit from the tightness in your chest and the mental fog that creeps whenever you want to just get done with it.

The majority of people believe ADHD does not exist, and keep leading you down a road where your self-esteem keeps getting destroyed more and more when no methods seems to work effectively.

When you get diagnosed, which in most parts of the world is so hard it'd be easier to plan your suicide; and you get prescribed medication, people call you a drug addict.

ADHD is one of the most researched disorders and the most treatable, but the majority of people who have it are hardly diagnosed and their problems are never taken seriously, because neurotypicals have a hard time relating with the experience.

You always have noise in your head. You can never relax. You always have to be doing something. You have a constant monologue going in your head and made up scenarios.

You're either stuck trying to start a task for two hours, or obsessively doing something for 12 hours.

Comorbid anxiety disorder is very common to have developed from all the childhood trauma resulting from ADHD.

coldblues··on KDE and GNOME seeks $100k to turn Flathub into a Store for the Linux desktop
I'd say that Nix has solved this problem way better than Flatpak.
coldblues··on KDE and GNOME seeks $100k to turn Flathub into a Store for the Linux desktop
Flatpak is a solution to package management as Docker is to servers. What's the predominant reason people use Docker? Because it's impossible to get a Python/NodeJS monstrosity working properly without it. On rolling release distributions, you don't ever need Flatpak. Its predominance is found in stable release distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora. Because they stall packages and their dependencies, it'll always be an issue to install new software. If anything, I prefer AppImage a lot more.

coldblues··on Roam, Twenty Years Before Roam
Roam singlehandedly made me love note taking. Before, it was so tedious and you were presented a wall of text, but it made content digestible and fluidly organizable using back links. Now I use Logseq, but it had a big part in getting my knowledge base to where it is now.
coldblues··on Unbundling Tools for Thought
I use Logseq currently. I just simply write in my Journals or a page, then I add the backlinks on a whim, and leave it be. Whenever I need that information again, it will be found by using the backlinks, if I don't remember what I'm even searching for.

That's all I do. It's simple, convenient, and doesn't break my flow with unnecessary complexity. I just write and link.

That kind of Zettelkasten note-taking workflow is what caught my attention and it's currently the only way I can take notes.

People who create complicated note-taking workflows using databases and such, they're very bizarre people to me. I can't do any of that without recoiling. But I can dump information into my graph and link it all together all day if I got into the flow. It's just "natural".

coldblues··on Infinite Canvas
It would be awesome if someone actually built an infinite canvas application that didn't run on the browser, so that you could actually use it effectively.

Currently, the majority of infinite canvas applications begin to noticeably lag and stutter after a while, and start to have syncing inconsistencies especially in their "multiplayer" mode.
