coldblues··on Ask HN: Is crypto an unviable, tech-bubble delusion?
Nobody talks about Monero in these discussions, but I'll be the person to keep mentioning it. Yes, the majority of crypto is garbage, because they don't have privacy in mind.
coldblues··on LLaMA2 Chat 70B outperformed ChatGPT
Awesome. What's great is that it can be unfiltered as well. So we'll be able to have models without all that incessant apologizing.
coldblues··on Ask HN: Do you know someone with no online presence? Are they really better off?
Looking at a lot of people involved in hacking, journalism, activism, and various illegal darknet operations, they all have a minimal online presence, at least one that spills from real life to the internet. But now those kinds of things kind of require minimal online presence, but I know plenty of people go low and earn a lot. Word of mouth is valued a lot more than advertising in a lot of circles.
coldblues··on Video shows how easy it is to find your location through a photo
I was thinking GeoGuessr and sure enough it's there. I sure wish I was obsessed enough to practice in that game. It's actually insane how close they can get to a location.
coldblues··on Ask HN: Tips how to find cheap/free tech?
Landfills perhaps. I've seen a few people talking about how they now have working CRTs to use. As long as you clean them and they don't explode, they should be fine.
coldblues··on Spotify's Price Increase Sparks User Exodus
A lot of people don't actually pay the conventional Spotify pricing. You can buy very cheap access to a family plan or switch your country using a VPN to pay less.
coldblues··on Ask HN: Finding complimentary technical people
How I've met people throughout the ages is through forums, IRC, various chat messengers. Contact people who might seem interested or ask the admins of those places if you can place an advertisement.
coldblues··on Git Repo: Anime-Girls-Holding-Programming-Books
Interesting to see this on HN, even though it was mass-flagged by everyone here. Sure, it's not a technical project, but it's a cool curiosity to see from a bunch of tech hobbyists contributing edits of anime girls holding programming books. It's a fact that a lot of people in tech have unconventional interests. Plenty of "quirky" projects like that. My only criticism is using Git to host these images. Are they even using Git LFS?
coldblues··on Signal walks the line between anarchism and pragmatism
Whenever this is mentioned, the answer is always the ease of adoption. Less tech literate people can just use their phone number and they won't have to bother themselves with anything else.
coldblues··on Internet search tips
Gwern is the person I'd become if I could properly monetize my ADHD and rabbit hole seeking behavior. I absolutely love his website and everything he publishes, and I am always delighted to look over his new stuff. Wish there are more people like him to read from.
coldblues··on Mini – The Minimal Language
I don't think many conlangs will ever succeed because of the relatively huge popularity of Esperanto.
coldblues··on Lazygit: Simple terminal UI for Git commands
I use this a lot, as well as Magit. Simple terminal commands work fine, but I like selecting what chunks of code I want to commit, and these tools make it especially easy.
coldblues··on Thorium is the first browser with HEVC and AC3 support even in a mkv container
The performance improvements are noticeable on my pretty old computer.
coldblues··on Intelligent people take longer to solve hard problems: study
To someone with ADHD (me) it does look like it. I seem to be one of the few people who want to discuss the correlation between ADHD and all of these traits, but unfortunately one of my replies didn't garner the attention I wanted.
coldblues··on Intelligent people take longer to solve hard problems: study
A lot of replies here talk about short term memory, needing to truly understand information on a deep level and have the "why?" question answered, using software to externalize information and a lot more that I can't really mention right now on a phone in the middle of the night browsing HN and coming across this gem.

A lot of this stuff seems highly related to ADHD. I exhibit them, and have done quite some amateur research myself on these behaviors and others seem to relate as well.

P.S: I am also an i3wm user btw ;)

coldblues··on Intelligent people take longer to solve hard problems: study
I have ADHD and I relate a lot. Do you as well?
coldblues··on Ask HN: Are you faster navigating windows with i3 than other window managers?
Absolutely true. I can't use anything else anymore.
coldblues··on The guide to software development with Guix
I much prefer GNU Guile over Nix. Anyone else? I saw some progress being made towards making NixOS compatible with other programming languages.
coldblues··on ArchiveTeam Opencollective
So much online content can disappear at any time. A lot of my favorite YouTube videos had suddenly disappeared without a trace as well as entire channels. Now I make sure to download and archive my favorite content.
coldblues··on 100K Context Windows
I think being "explicitly approved" matters a lot in this context. Regular customers can't benefit from the same privileges you did.
coldblues··on 100K Context Windows
Eventually you will get your account banned, not to mention that the filtering that they do decreases the quality of the results you will get compared to an uncensored model, even if you can "jailbreak" it.
coldblues··on 100K Context Windows
It's very unfortunate that all of these AI models are so impressive, yet they're all heavily filtered and bogged down by these massive AI corporations. All the filtering that they do heavily impacts the performance of the language models. A 100K context would also be incredible for roleplay but infeasible because of the heavy filtering.
coldblues··on Forgetful Browsing

coldblues··on Ask HN: Do you feel OpenAI is in a league of their own?
LLMs are way too computationally expensive. I would like to see specialized and unfiltered models, but the only way that could happen is through an untapped market for such a thing, or breakthrough research to make it easier to run on consumer hardware. LLMs will only be run by million dollar companies for some time.
coldblues··on Why I Believe in Personal Websites
The view people have of the "old internet" is even more rose-tinted than we tell each other.

The majority of people did not have websites. The majority of people did not even know how to use a computer. The reason websites looked the way they did was because everyone had to make do with what they had on hand, and it wasn't much. They weren't designers, they didn't know anything about usability or readability, they just wanted to put something out there. And it was awful. It was unreadable. And most of those sites died. The sites that still remained are quite similar to the ones we have now.

The reason we have such "boring" webpages is because they're content-focused. There's plenty of design-focused websites too, but they're proper, not erratic. We need websites to be accessible and to load fast.

The irony is that those same 90's looking websites can often times be full of JS and images that slow down your computer.

We have talked about megacorps owning our content and online identity, but domains and hosting is not much different either. Especially if you're not deploying yourself and using some product.

And do most people really need their own website, and in this time specifically, where any public information can be weaponized?

I fully support hosting your own site, but we should be focusing on secure and anonymous tech. I2P, Tor, Monero, IPFS. That's the wild west, that's the real web we should be using. Pure, unfiltered content and online interaction, truly out of reach and personalized.

coldblues··on Tell HN: Veracrypt last release was 1 year ago
Latest Stable Release - 1.25.9 (Saturday February 19, 2022)
coldblues··on Testing for Posix Compliance with Chimera Linux
I've recently tried the distribution and I really like it. It's pretty much the successor of Void Linux.
coldblues··on I stopped using Operator Mono
For me, PragmataPro is the only font worth buying. There is so much effort put into the font - "More than 9000 characters optimized from 9pt to 48pt to guarantee the best possible readability"
coldblues··on Tell HN: My son is being bullied for owning an Android phone
Is this primarily a US thing? I have never heard of such a thing where I live. The only other country I can think of is Japan.
coldblues··on Outline VPN – Access to the free and open internet
Great tool, but using a VPS to mask your connection actually makes you stand out a lot more than just using something like Mullvad. Not to mention that it's a lot more expensive than traditional VPN providers.
