codinghorror··on Why iPhone Xs performance on JavaScript is so good
It's not 40% faster at "almost all other benchmarks". In Geekbench 4 single core, it's about 15% faster, and in many other benchmarks about the same. That's why the official guidance from Apple is that the XS should be 15% faster. Having seen the other low level benchmarks, I was really surprised when I saw the Speedometer results..
codinghorror··on Why iPhone Xs performance on JavaScript is so good
JS perf has tightly tracked single threaded CPU perf for a long, long time -- as long as I can remember. That said, it is certainly possible memory speed is also a factor, see https://www.anandtech.com/show/13392/the-iphone-xs-xs-max-re...
codinghorror··on Why iPhone Xs performance on JavaScript is so good
As I said in my reply to that, it could also be in combination with the much faster memory / caches on A12 -- see https://www.anandtech.com/show/13392/the-iphone-xs-xs-max-re...
codinghorror··on Ask HN: What do you struggle with?
At this point? Sanity.
codinghorror··on Google: Security Keys Neutralized Employee Phishing

codinghorror··on Classic 1984 video game Robot Odyssey available online
oh my goooosh this is amazing. See: https://blog.codinghorror.com/heres-the-programming-game-you... and specifically http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/bitwise/2014/01/rob...
codinghorror··on I’m Nat Friedman, Future CEO of GitHub. AMA
I wouldn't say I care about it on HN but it is a site topic (programming) that is relevant to my career, so it aligns with my interests. Reddit is just.. irrelevant.. to basically everything. It's fine for entertainment at best.
codinghorror··on I’m Nat Friedman, Future CEO of GitHub. AMA
I can't imagine a world where anyone would care about their Reddit account karma. I periodically destroy any Reddit account I have to use as a matter of online hygiene.

(and yes, I destroyed the account I did an AMA on a while back as well.)

codinghorror··on AMD Reveals Threadripper 2: Up to 32 Cores, 250W, X399 Refresh
it's still true, the sweet spot just moved to 2 cores instead of 1
codinghorror··on Ruby 2.6.0-preview2 released with JIT
> It's the Rails convenience stuff which slows things down massively.

Yeah no kidding.. https://samsaffron.com/archive/2018/06/01/an-analysis-of-mem...

codinghorror··on The end of Iridium flares?
You may not have gotten an offer, but you do get something else of incalculable value: my upvote!
codinghorror··on The “Run Less Software” philosophy
that's right and instead you should outsource them to us
codinghorror··on Stack Overflow Culture
Also note that the pattern of splitting into experts and newbies is common in the SE engine, look at English vs. English Learners and Math vs. Mathoverflow. You are correct.
codinghorror··on Stack Overflow Culture
> I wish I could see the actual comments from others that irritated Rob but it seems like I can't find his SO profile. (Did Rob Conery delete his SO profile?[1])

You and me both. Rob emailed me about this and I asked him the same thing.

Criticism without actual examples is not actionable. Also one person’s pot-ah-to is often another person’s poh-tah-to if you know what I mean.

codinghorror··on Stack Overflow Culture
Downvotes do cost 1 rep already. They have for almost a decade now.
codinghorror··on Stack Overflow Culture
I completely agree that anonymous downvotes are an unfettered negative _in systems of discussion and opinion_.
codinghorror··on Stack Overflow Culture
We hadn’t quite figured out that opinions and discussion questions were not a good fit in the early days.
codinghorror··on Stack Overflow Culture
Stack Overflow is for facts, data, and science. Head over to Quora to see how the other path turned out.
codinghorror··on Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet
It is wildly inaccurate to call HN or Reddit “strong moderation” — the tooling alone is abysmally bad, plus Reddit can’t put the “post anything you want as long as it is not literally illegal” genie back in the bottle so easily after a decade.
codinghorror··on Getting free of toxic tech culture
For example here https://wpengine-careers.com — seems way more representative of the “average developer” job than Google. Getting in to Google is elite, like making the NBA, and they have extreme barriers to entry.

I don’t think I could get a job at Google, for example; I would not pass their intensive multi-week screening process. I wouldn’t even try.

codinghorror··on Getting free of toxic tech culture
https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/03/06/chart-the-perce...

For web developers, it's 34%, which is roughly the same as dentists.

Computer "science" is kinda BS as a field.

codinghorror··on Leap: An Online Community for Women
> Then you invite in to the community people who have been socialised as men, have grown up as men, have spent most of their professional lives as men and who have often contributed to exactly the kind of working environment that makes womens' lives difficult as tech workers. That's defeating the whole point of a "community where the core culture [will be] set by women".

Thank you for bringing this up, I had many of the same thoughts but it was not my place to say it. I think it is important, though.

codinghorror··on The browser “Brave” loads major news sites 2x – 8x faster
This is completely credible if it has built in adblocking.
codinghorror··on Killing Off Wasabi (2015)
Still dead!
codinghorror··on So Close
Look up the marshmallow experiment.
codinghorror··on Evidence-Based Guidelines for Writing Questions on Stack Overflow
Well, sort of, but it is a complex, slippery slope and easiest to just avoid the realm of opinion altogether.
codinghorror··on Evidence-Based Guidelines for Writing Questions on Stack Overflow
Anywhere but Stack Overflow. It is a great big Internet!
codinghorror··on Evidence-Based Guidelines for Writing Questions on Stack Overflow
Completely incorrect. You can edit answers as an anonymous user and have been able to since.. 2010-ish?
codinghorror··on Evidence-Based Guidelines for Writing Questions on Stack Overflow
Completely incorrect, you can answer any question as a brand new user. As another commenter pointed out, maybe you meant commenting? Which isn’t answering the question, but leaving a post-it note on an existing answer or question.
codinghorror··on Evidence-Based Guidelines for Writing Questions on Stack Overflow
The people who are dissatisfied invariably ask opinion based questions. That is not what Stack Overflow is for. Sure, there is always more than one way to do it, and any good SO question often has three solid viable answers — but if there are dozens? hundreds? .. it’s no longer a question, but a bikeshed type discussion.
