Why 50? Why not 40? 30?

Adults tend to stop making friends after 30.

codesushi42··on Ocean plastic waste probably comes from ships, report says
That may be true, but in this case all of the cables were the same and from the same manufacturer.

There was no reason why the plastic bags were needed. None.

codesushi42··on Global Illumination in WebGL
Spoken like a true armchair game developer.

Writing your own engine is never your most important problem as an indie developer nowadays. It's not important at all.

If you have lost sight of that, then you've already failed.

codesushi42··on Ocean plastic waste probably comes from ships, report says
Why should we be using plastic straws at all?
codesushi42··on Ocean plastic waste probably comes from ships, report says
The pointless use of plastic is astounding. Just the other day I was sorting through electronic cables that were individually packaged in their own plastic bags. What the fuck was the point? Even the actual connector pins had their own dedicated plastic covers, and the cable was tied with a plastic tie. Yet the plastic bags were somehow still needed?

Jesus fucking Christ.

codesushi42··on RxBar co-founder Peter Rahal on life after becoming a millionaire
Writing novels while you're dirt poor and riding a train to your low paying job does not count as "drive"?

I would love to hear your definition of "drive" then.

codesushi42··on RxBar co-founder Peter Rahal on life after becoming a millionaire
That is what makes ambitious people successful. They always want more and never stop wanting more.

Those who are content with settling don't have the drive to make it.

You must be new here. This same attitude permeates all of tech, especially SV, where folks constantly tout their non-accomplishments publicly. Every idiot is giving advice because every idiot is looking for some.

And there are a whole lotta idiots in SV smelling their own farts.

codesushi42··on Global Illumination in WebGL
Huh? Unity integrates seamlessly into webpages just as well any other WASM target does.
codesushi42··on Global Illumination in WebGL
Unity is incredibly versatile. As a single dev, it is highly unlikely that you'll be able to implement a use case that it doesn't support. It is far more likely that you are reinventing the wheel out of ignorance.
codesushi42··on Global Illumination in WebGL
It is not off topic at all. Don't reinvent the wheel if you want fast, meaningful results. DRY. You should know better. Otherwise it's only useful for curiosity's sake, as stated.

Save yourself the pain and use Unity instead if your goal is to ship something.

codesushi42··on Global Illumination in WebGL
If you want to ship a game, don't write your own engine. End of story.
codesushi42··on Global Illumination in WebGL
Yep, I don't know why anyone would bother to write their own engine instead, unless it's out of pure curiosity.
codesushi42··on Negative Rates Are Rewriting the Rules of Modern Finance
That's not the same. It has held up quite well, wouldn't you agree?

A lot of financial models have never, ever worked in any sense when put to use in real markets.

It is completely different. These are mathematical models predicting the outcome of complex systems, not physical laws that are observable in every day life (even if the intuition can be wrong, only work above the subatomic level etc).

There's no "unifying theory" to uncover. A lot of the research is just plain garbage. Otherwise it would be easy to become wealthy through pure academic pursuit, wouldn't you agree? But markets don't work that way, and these theories can be easily tested and fail every time.

codesushi42··on Negative Rates Are Rewriting the Rules of Modern Finance
Huh? That's a terrible example, gravity is easily observable here on Earth, hence why the theory was formulated using empirical experiments.

Way to find an example that supports my point.

codesushi42··on Negative Rates Are Rewriting the Rules of Modern Finance
Which financial model actually works in the real world? A lot of what is studied seems to be nonsense from more than 60 years ago, because computers and algorithmic thinking started to come into vogue in economics research.

The same can be stated about Markowitz portfolio optimization, a product of hype in the operations research space at the time. It obviously doesn't work because portfolio optimization isn't a simple convex optimization problem in the real world. Yet anyone who studies finance is forced to learn it and other empirically failed bullshit.

codesushi42··on Dog-walking startup Wag raised $300M, then things got messy
Exactly this. OP doesn't seem to get it. It takes a long time and "launching" is never certain. Thank you sir.
codesushi42··on Dog-walking startup Wag raised $300M, then things got messy
Plenty of sequencing software start ups, platforms, etc that are doomed to fail in this over saturated space.
codesushi42··on SNES Cartridges and Enhancement Chips
Hindsight is always 20/20. At the time, and even on paper, 32X did not sound like that bad of an idea. The 32X even sold well initially. I wanted one at launch, and bought one a few years ago (it truly is terrible). At launch it was a relatively cheap entry into 3D gaming. Keep in mind the only alternatives were multi thousand dollar PCs and the $800 3DO, not adjusted for inflation.

But the announcement of the Saturn soon after killed the 32X.

And programming for two VDPs was incredibly difficult. Especially considering games were still being written in assembly even at that point in the industry.

Plus the economics didn't make sense. It is cheaper to manufacture a single console instead of a base system and add-on separately. You end up confusing the consumer, and limiting market reach because your add-on market is a subset of your base unit's market size.

And the games were bad for the most part. Really bad. I have played the majority of home consoles. Even the likes of the 3DO, Jaguar, Virtual Boy, Sega CD, etc. The 32X is easily one of the worst consoles, ever, period.

codesushi42··on SNES Cartridges and Enhancement Chips
32X was a similar concept, with the idea of packaging up and reusing enhancement chips in a base cartridge that would add 3D support to the Genesis. The Genesis VDP is still used in 32X games, usually to render the background while the 32X's VDP renders flat shaded polygons on top.

The Saturn uses a similar architecture of using two VDPs, with one mainly dedicated to rendering the background.

codesushi42··on SNES Cartridges and Enhancement Chips
Sega had their own version for the Genesis, the SVP: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Virtua_Processor

Virtua Racing was the only game released with it, but there were others planned for it originally. That is, until Sega decided to use the same technology for the 32X, which added a lot of power but was a terrible commercial failure.

codesushi42··on The One Man MMO Project
Dead reckoning is a bit harder when your game isn't using a perspective based camera (2D or orthographic). Otherwise you can use visual tricks to hide the rubber banding from a distance. Though when in 2D the solution is to interpolate between waypoints.
