codeonline··on Ask HN: Is anyone using cloud dev environments (e.g. Codespaces/Replit) at work?
I only lightly use the cloud hosted environments but regularly use dev containers now to ensure that complex development environment are only configured once and shared amongst a team. It ensures no more ' works on my machine issues ' plus means both development and production are extremely stable
codeonline··on Building an economy simulator from scratch
I'd love to take a look too. Just a suggestion, push it to github then clean it up. It's always helpful to see not just the product but the process. Great work.
codeonline··on Runme – Interactive Runbooks Built with Markdown
I like the idea of this conceptually but it feels that I could do all this with github actions. Is it the interactivity and ease of changing the script that is the selling point here?
codeonline··on Vscode.dev: Local Development with Cloud Tools
Not totally related to the above but I have to say I love the vscode dev containers experience.

I am working on a few projects in the clinical research field with complex combinations of languages ,stacks and dependencies and love that we can bundle a complete development environment into the repo along with infra declared via docker compose.

codeonline··on GPT-Migrate converts repos from one lang/framework to another
When you say it's failed completely what do you mean?

I've been translating between c# and python and having a great deal of success at the function and class level. I even ported unit tests easily between xunit and pythons unittest library. I've got close to 100% test coverage so I'm fairly confident it's done well

Just some random advice Fields need sorting Needs to show monthly and annual costs
codeonline··on Ask HN: What are the top BaaS (Back end as a Service) platforms in 2023
Aws Lightsail is a lightweight version of aws. I find it handy for prototypes and small builds.
codeonline··on Ask HN: How do you ramp up on a new job?
> run the codebase through a LLM

Do you have a good example of how to go about that?

codeonline··on I unschool my 5 kids. This is how much it costs
There is so much about this comment that I disagree with that's its hard to know where to start.

I'll choose just one point, hopefully the least contentious.

Your child isn't being educated by 'some stranger'. They are being educated by someone with the required level of educational attainment themselves. There is a robust regulatory framework in place to ensure this as well as to address issues relating to the physical school environs and the curriculum taught.

They have passed the necessary background checks and continue to do so.

Those chose to become educators, at time and expense to themselves.

I could go on but I won't labour the point

codeonline··on Envio – The CLI tool to manage your Enviornment Variables
This looks nice, I'm often finding it a bit annoying working with a few sets of env vars locally and I've accidentally committed them a few times over the years when I kept them in files. Will have a play..ta
codeonline··on Ask HN: What games are your kids learning the most from?
Khan academy for kids. It's wonderfully educational, suitable for a broad range of ages, and large range of high quality content. We might not consider it a 'game' per se but my kids have limited enough experience with apps that this definately qualifies.
codeonline··on Show HN: Generate User Interface Components with GPT-3
I think its broken. Just throwing up a js prompt
codeonline··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
There is an AWS CDN available that can be placed in front of the s3 bucket. Also allows for custom domain names, TLS, globally distributed for low latency ec. https://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/
codeonline··on We’ve filed a lawsuit challenging Stable Diffusion
Lossy compression isn't reversible but presumably the content when compressed tjis way is still covered by copyright.
codeonline··on Ask HN: Someone is proxy-mirroring my website, can I do anything?
When you detect their ip.. - serve images upside down - serve images blurry

More examples here from long long ago.. http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pete/upside-down-ternet.html

codeonline··on Ask HN: Is it sloppy coding culture or just me/ADHD?
Find a new position, it's not just you.

I get a huge amount of satisfaction having a large collection of tests exploring every uses case and edge case of my services public api and the safety with which it means I can embark on ambitious refactors.

codeonline··on Ask HN: How did you become better at programming?
I start by writing a small amount of code at a level i understand. I add unit tests demonstrating that it behaves as it should. I attempt to improve it via a single small change and add tests validating this new behaviour is working as it should. I commit at each step too. I do this to ensure that the gap between my understanding at the last step and this new step is concise and easily testable. I try to be patient with this process, slowing adding functionality. It's slow, even tedious but methodical. After an hour or two you look at what you've got and as a whole it's impressive. Adding unit tests with every step as you go and committing at every success means you're continually 'saving your game' and can just revert / commit at every step.

I find this approach means you don't hit the 'its all too hard' barrier.

codeonline··on Show HN: I made a tool to create product tutorials
These look good for visualising user stories too.

codeonline··on Ask HN: What is the simplest and most flexible way to build a CRUD app in 2019?
Make use of the tools you are most familiar with. You want delays to arise from your understanding of the problem domain rather that the platform upon which you are building it. Also if you are targeting the simplest and most flexible execution, then you should accept that the platform you choose for v1 might not be the same for v2 as more specific use cases might emerge that will enable you to better compare frameworks and platforms.
codeonline··on Ask HN: Is there a service like Heroku for hosting .NET core applications / dbs?
Also you might be interested in looking at FluentMigrator for database migrations. It's a tad more work but they have a really well thought out fluent interface for writing migrations. I find it much nicer to work with than ef migrations
codeonline··on Ask HN: Is there a service like Heroku for hosting .NET core applications / dbs?
Yes. There is https://appharbor.com It also supports many free tier third party add-ons and prior to docker being as popular as it is I found it a great site to quickly deploy prototypes https://appharbor.com/addons There is also an opportunity to request free hosting if you are building something for the developer community. https://appharbor.com/page/community-application-program
