codeoclock··on Poll: Freelance developers in London, how much do you charge per hour?
I should contextualise why I feel this is a bit low - I met a 16yo iOS developer last week who was telling me how he had to turn down a £50,000 3 month contract because he wanted to focus on his A Levels.

Yeah, it's great to be earning money, but I put a lot of work into it, and I feel like there's a huge opportunity cost. I don't have time to socialise. I don't mean "oh, I can't go to the SU pub every night", I mean I haven't had any time for any recreational activity in the past 7 weeks, apart from one hackathon. I don't have time to go to the gym, I barely have the opportunity to go shopping (which has led to me putting on weight because of takeaway meals and fast food).

So yeah, it is great to have an income as a student, particularly in London. I wouldn't be able to pay my rent otherwise, the student loan is totally insufficient for even rent alone, let alone other expenses on top of that. But there is a major downside as well.

£20. I'm a student, and I work part time, remotely, for a company in SF. It's good experience, which is added value, but I still think it's a bit low.

Can we not just say 'people'? I'm a programmer, and I'm male, but I'm not a male programmer. They're entirely separate things. My programming is completely and utterly unrelated to my gender. I work with lots of other fantastic minds, and their gender couldn't make less of a difference to their skills. You don't have to be a certain gender to do a certain thing - isn't that the whole message of equality?

codeoclock··on Ask HN: I'm a chronic procrastinator – how do I break it?
Also, and perhaps more importantly, make sure you have the opportunity to grow as a developer at whatever job you're in. If a job doesn't provide learning opportunities pretty regularly, I feel as if I'm wasting my time and don't care about the product, and as a result spend a lot more time on HN while I'm at work. I'm at work right now :P
codeoclock··on Ask HN: I'm a chronic procrastinator – how do I break it?
I'm in a similar position, but I find that the major factor that affects my procrastination is my emotional investment in the product I'm making. At work, I don't really care about the application I'm building - largely because the quality of the existing codebase makes me depressed. However, when I get home and work on my own side projects, I code like there's no tomorrow, and have no problem with focus. I haven't had the opportunity to test my theory yet, but I think one way of tackling procrastination is to make sure you're in a job that you really care about.

Looks like it was the only place European users data was stored. https://twitter.com/KimDotcom/status/347373843767238658
codeoclock··on Leaseweb has wiped all Megaupload servers
Leaseweb isn't closed. They just had to store some servers. They could just turn them off, put them in storage, then sue law enforcement or the DOJ equivalent for the opportunity cost and storage costs. That's not an accurate analogy at all.
codeoclock··on Patreon Founder (Jack Conte) - A great approach to running a site
YES! This guy is an inspiration. As a musician I'm so happy that this is becoming a valid model of art distribution - rather than having to sign with a label and end up taking about 2% (ok, maybe it's not quite that bad) of sales.

Also, point 3. It's like WHAAAaAAAaAT?!

Moreover, the videos are extraordinary. Robots? Light shows? YESSSS! :D

All the good things to say about Jack Conte

codeoclock··on Design, and why I don't do it
I should've specified web design and found an actual definition of it before I posted. Ah well, next time :)
codeoclock··on Design, and why I don't do it
That is bizarre, I have no idea why that would've happened.
codeoclock··on Design, and why I don't do it
I was talking about web design and web development. I have no desire to be any other kind of designer.

I'll keep you posted on whether or not the Design for Hackers book is any good.
codeoclock··on Want to Block Common Passwords? Sorry, That is Patented
The fact that it would cost any money at all is completely ludicrous, any judge with any basic concept of logic can see that it's an obvious development of technology and therefore can't be patented. You shouldn't have to hire a lawyer to prove that.
codeoclock··on Hacking debt
How about 20% of time spent working should be spent hacking? Seems to be working well for Google employees.
codeoclock··on Want to Block Common Passwords? Sorry, That is Patented
Surely you could just do it anyway, because there's no way a patent like that would hold up in court if they tried to sue you. I realise though that obviously it shouldn't happen in the first place, and doing it anyway could incur legal costs.
codeoclock··on Is Social Media Worthless?
Obviously it depends on the business. If you're trying to market work tools, people generally don't (or don't like to) discover them socially (apart from JS frameworks). However, if you're trying to market an album, movie, or media, it does quite well.

codeoclock··on Killing hackers is justified in cyber warfare, says NATO-commissioned report
I totally get that, killing by way of attacking critical infrastructure is totally morally wrong, but it doesn't justify retaliation by killing or "counterstrike". It's the reason I don't agree with the death penalty, but I also get that the death penalty is a contentious issue. My point is, killing is bad all the time regardless of reasoning (barring self defence), and justifying killing by saying "oh, they did it first" isn't ok. Surely it would be better to go about it in such a way that all killing was marked as wrong, and retaliation would be confined to reasonable legal measures, such as jailtime etc.
codeoclock··on Killing hackers is justified in cyber warfare, says NATO-commissioned report
...what? What part of "killing is bad" don't these people understand?!
codeoclock··on Unfit for work
> Ideally, none of us would ever have to work. Unfortunately, that isn't our reality.

Yet! Seriously, lets just focus on building robots to do things like build roads and buildings, tend farms, drive vehicles, etc. etc. We could almost definitely pass human efficiency in the next 50 years, and nobody would ever have to do manual work again (although if that's something somebody likes doing they should totally have the option if that's what they want).

Also, I'm not convinced a job in construction is "similarly skilled" to office and admin work. But that's kind of beside the point, it's possible to earn a good living from either manual or sedentary work. Sure, the extremely high earners are exclusively sedentary workers (if they work in the traditional sense at all), but that speaks to the wider problem of wealth distribution, where the fabled top 1% have 20% of the countries total wealth.
