codenesium··on Twenty years of C# with Anders Hejlsberg [audio]
Yes. .net now has self contained builds. The whole deploy can be a single executable with some caveats.
codenesium··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
Felt that way in my 20s. Married a girl and bought a house and those feelings went away. But...if you don't want to do those things don't renew your lease and go travel. Do some risky stuff while your out there. You never know who you're going to meet.
codenesium··on Defund the Police meets the crime wave
Not much. It's an opinion piece. Probably doesn't belong on HN.
codenesium··on I just don’t want to be busy anymore
Same age. Same experience.
codenesium··on [dead]
This is nonsense. They say there have been 5k deaths after taking the vaccine then say trust us it's 100 to 200 times higher. The vaccine is killing more people then covid! This trash article doesn't belong on hn.
codenesium··on Golang vs. C# (.NET 5.0) at Benchmarks Game
That nuance does matter which is why we are still having the discussion. Teams can pick which style they want but mixing is unnecessary overhead and when you're talking about 10s or 100s of solutions I'd like the style to match across the board.
codenesium··on We replaced rental brokers with software and filled 200 vacant apartments
Probably for the same reason your employer does. Not saying it's fair to discriminate against people who have paid their debt to society but I wouldn't be crazy about having a rapist or murderer neighbor.
codenesium··on Mouse lungs after long-term exposure to atmosphere predicted by climate change
Guess we have to turn human evolution back on. Could this be the cause of the childless dystopia we see in books and movies?
codenesium··on Shortage of air conditioner parts expected this summer
No it's not. In a lot of places if you're the home owner you can do your own everything.
codenesium··on Amazon reverses course, expands work-from-home options
This sounds like hell. People rushing around and yelling?
codenesium··on Don’t hire top talent; hire for weaknesses
The best programmers I know didn't go to college. It's been my experience that degrees and standardized test don't tell you jack about how well someone will do a job.
codenesium··on SwiftGraphQL – A GraphQL client that lets you forget about GraphQL
When your backend is sql how can you even do this efficiently? Databases require indexes. If you can query anything then there are performance bombs all over the place. It's different if you're querying elastic I guess.
codenesium··on How long does a bottle of wine last after it is opened?
I make a little wine. I bottle what's left into a 375ml bottle. Just make sure you drink in half bottle increments.
codenesium··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
I feel like you have the right to free speech. You don't have a right to a platform though. If you want to spread your hate person to person go for it. We're not going to broadcast your nonsense to the world.
codenesium··on Why Jira Sucks
Generally the details have been sorted out at some level otherwise how did you estimate it? And the ticket was likely estimated 2 months ago and you may not have been a part of that. I prefer a ticket with as much detail as possible so I'm not making the wrong assumptions.
codenesium··on Computer science is not software engineering
If you don't know the performance requirements of something you're about to build you should gather that before you build it.
codenesium··on Computer science is not software engineering
I've always thought computer science should just be in the math department. Software engineering uses concepts from CS but in my experience it's far apart.
codenesium··on Analyzing the compromised DLL file that started the Solorigate attack
They likely put a program on the build server to make the changes after checkout before build. Which would be impossible to detect.
codenesium··on Apple M1 vs. Ryzen 3900X vs. Intel I9 in Software Development
My primary dev environment is in ec2. I don't really care about multiple monitors. It's so convenient.
codenesium··on Hire people who give a shit
Heroes are like firefighters. In my experience the firefighters are often the arsonists.
codenesium··on Hire people who give a shit
This sounds like a child wrote it. You should hire smart people who get shit done. Hire craftsmen. The whole thing about caring about the company is a joke without real equity. If you care about your work and do a good job then that is your contribution to the company. Engineers usually have 0 input into the direction a company takes so it's hard to care that much.
codenesium··on PostgREST: REST API for any Postgres database
There are definitely the right tools for the right job. I work in enterprise on applications that will run for decades. It makes no sense for us to sacrifice long term maintainability to ship something fast.
codenesium··on PostgREST: REST API for any Postgres database
I've learned you're better off building software that matches exactly what you need right now and change it over time as requirements change. These tools are great for a prototype but you pay the debt in the future. This is coming from someone who built a system system just like postgrest for a different tech stack.
codenesium··on Full text search on 400M US court cases
Minor in this context is often 18 to 20 years old.
codenesium··on Show HN: Sir – Git-diff-able JSON database on yer filesystem
Is sqlite not diffable?
codenesium··on Grubhub sued for listing restaurants without permission
They should lose their ass for this. It hurts the reputation of small restaurants when the food isn't good and it might not even be their fault. Shouldn't there be some kind of health code rules for food delivery?
codenesium··on Show HN: A faster way to prototype your APIs using OpenAPI 3 and Swagger UI
Shameless plug! Generate a .net core skeleton from a OpenAPI spec. It's a work in progress.

codenesium··on Hands-Free Coding: How I develop software using dictation and eye-tracking
I personally have had carpal tunnel release surgery and bilateral rib resection for thoracic outlet syndrome. These surgeries fixed most of my issues but for the last couple of years I haven't tolerated sitting well because of my back so I use a standing desk. I've thought about a computer interface that is the opposite of this article. Something that requires more non-repetitive physical movement so that you're exercising while you program. Sure it would take longer to type but we all know working on a computer all day is bad for our health.
codenesium··on That coworker who never stops refactoring
There is pointless refactoring but Fred sounds like a senior developer cleaning up messes to me.
codenesium··on Social Movements Are Pushing Google Sheets to the Breaking Point
This jumps out to me as the same thing as database contention except you have to distribute changes to every consumer. If everybody is only allowed to append I'm sure it scales to infinity like an event store. Handling updates just gets messy.
