codeisawesome··on Launch HN: Highlight.io (YC W23) – Open-source, full stack web app monitoring
Congrats on the launch! Question out of curiosity to the highlight team: when you’re building out the product you would probably like to test your own user flows by simulating weird bugs in complex systems to see how well highlight can help catch it. Do you have a standard kit you use containing common setups for that type of product research / validation?
codeisawesome··on Proof you can do hard things
Feels like many other comments here are trivial objections for the sake of sounding contrarian. Or even, humble bragging about how easy math was to the commenter. I found the article to be a great, new (to me), and widely applicable perspective on the matter.
codeisawesome··on The myth of the $600 hammer (1998)
This sounds rather familiar, in Software :)
codeisawesome··on Sam Altman says the remote work ‘experiment’ was a mistake
> I can't imagine that strolling by an open office once in a while to see people in cubicles is that fulfilling.

To help spur your imagination, may I recommend a reading of the “Gervais principle” series by Venkatesh Rao over on ribbonfarm.com? :)

codeisawesome··on How much can Duolingo teach us?
I find Duolingo’s cartoons racist, somehow the Brown people are always doing funny / silly things, and sound weird. But the other characters are a lot more ‘normal’.
codeisawesome··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
I often wonder why academia loves obtuse prose; the only dialect I’ve seen equally enthusiastically adopted while being just as useless is Corpspeak.
codeisawesome··on Digital clutter: Learning to let go and stop hoarding terabytes
Looks great, thanks!
codeisawesome··on Uber, Amazon use AI to pay people different wages for same work: Study
No, it’s actually very surprising to me. I genuinely (and super naively, I now realize) thought gig work was ‘fair’: as in subjectively unpleasant, but ‘equally unpleasant’ for everyone having to do it.
codeisawesome··on Uber, Amazon use AI to pay people different wages for same work: Study
Did folks like you in this thread thinking along this path, actually read the article? The algorithms don’t appear to be taking on the output (such as star ratings) alone into consideration. This is the core of your argument.

The algorithms are allegedly manipulating workers into working longer than they would otherwise need to, by withholding opportunities so that it takes longer for their daily goal to hit. That’s horrible if true!

codeisawesome··on Uber, Amazon use AI to pay people different wages for same work: Study
I found Amazon’s BS non-answer even more offensive. “Our workers willingly go over the barrel and they tell us they love it! What’s your problem…?”
codeisawesome··on Uber, Amazon use AI to pay people different wages for same work: Study
No sorry, this was terribly surprising to me. I am unironically stating that I’m unpleasantly shocked. I would be ashamed to work for these teams as a software engineer.

It’s weird, I always intuitively understood that knowledge workers were screwed in this way by HR re: pay equity, stating market dynamics. But even with my unhealthy level of cynicism, I couldn’t stomach hearing the same thing about gig work. It feels like the sacredness of these jobs as society’s unkind-ish fallback for anyone that needs it has been violated. Nothing is safe :(

> Dubal said these instances could take the form of a food delivery driver being offered a lower rate than another driver would have been — because the AI algorithm predicted the first driver would be more likely to accept that rate. If a driver tends to work until they hit a certain daily mark, say $100, she said the algorithm might offer them lower rates to keep the driver working longer.

Wow that is fucking disgusting.

codeisawesome··on Digital clutter: Learning to let go and stop hoarding terabytes
What’s the best open source file and backup managemen tool that can upload to AWS and GCP cloud storage, with integrity checking and with pre-upload encryption? I don’t want to start writing one only to discover a powerful thing that already exists in the OSS community and is trusted.
codeisawesome··on Digital clutter: Learning to let go and stop hoarding terabytes
Is Arq open source? I have a similar problem set but I don’t want to use a closed source product managing my encryption and uploads.
codeisawesome··on ChatGPT Plugins
I tried to contact their support over that latter aspect, their support doesn't respond at all. They don't have a GPT bot answering their support requests..
codeisawesome··on We built an exceedingly polite AI dog that answers questions about your APIs
Somewhat off topic but this is what turns me off about Jarvis / Friday during rewatches of any MCU properties. So unrealistic to have quippy AI be useful in the midst of combat.

Also: I just realised that the Avengers would never happen if Stark just realised that launching Jarvis as a product would take the world by storm :D

codeisawesome··on Launch HN: Propify (YC W23) – Property Management System API Aggregator
I’m delighted to discover that offering an API by itself (that too specific to one domain) is a valuable business model! Congrats on the launch folks!
codeisawesome··on Crab crisis in Bering Sea a sign of ‘borealization’
That's interesting; when searched there seems to be very little mainstream media coverage of the concept. What are some of the disadvantages of the insect feed approach for aquaculture?
codeisawesome··on A senior engineer's guide to the system design interview
Part 2 link at the bottom starts getting more specific: https://interviewing.io/guides/system-design-interview/part-...

I like some parts of part 1 too, like this paraphrased quote from a senior FB engineer “I’ve learned more about distributed systems reading the internal interview wiki at FB than anything I ever actually built myself… the actual systems at scale are designed by platform teams and most engineers don’t have to think about the impact of dumping a billion messages on a queue, because the infra team will handle it”.

Goes to show what a ridiculous game we’re all forced to play in tech.

codeisawesome··on The vertical farming bubble is finally popping
Could it be the idea is simply way ahead of its time? Nuclear fusion could result in much cheaper energy, green hydrogen could bring down transportation costs, and human population ballooning to massive levels would drive up the value of usable land… but maybe all that is 30 years out.
codeisawesome··on PFAS can suppress white blood cells’ ability to destroy invaders
Thanks a lot for clarifying!
codeisawesome··on PFAS can suppress white blood cells’ ability to destroy invaders
Jumping on this thread! Does Cordura fabric contain PFAS? It’s the stuff a lot of tech backpacks are made of!
codeisawesome··on Algorithmic Trading: A Practitioner’s Guide
I always wonder if this space hasn’t been entirely cornered by HFTs. Isn’t it futile as an individual?
codeisawesome··on ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web
To stretch the thumbnail analogy from other threads, that feels like the “thumbnail” returned was a horse when you asked it to snapshot a car. Got the “mode of transport” intention correctly but gave you super inaccurate details..
codeisawesome··on The “Build Your Own Redis” Book Is Completed
I’d love a Manning project subscription but it doesn’t exist..
codeisawesome··on OpenAI and Microsoft extend partnership
Can’t seem to do that while the thing is down… wonder why they didn’t choose to separate the payment UX from the actual product.
codeisawesome··on Ask HN: Upskilling as a Data Engineer
What’s a good authoritative source that tracks use-cases across industries for data? I often find resources that are either too shallow and high-level (literally one-line) or a super deep dive on a singular use case.
codeisawesome··on Freeform: a new app designed for creative collaboration
My wish list for the next version of Freeform contains only two items:

• Snap to shape from free-hand drawings (such as a square/line/circle). Other note taking apps have this.

• Infinite Zoom Out and Zoom In. Currently the canvas expands in all directions, but the zoom in is locked to 10% min and 400% max. I want my boards to be able to have 'depth', particularly useful when sketching stuff with a 'drill-down' component.

codeisawesome··on Ask HN: Those with money-making side projects, how did you come up with the idea?
How do you deal with heavyweight competition like Camtasia?
codeisawesome··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
What’s the best book/material on how to build a business like your friend’s? Discovering the niche, and expanding the client base are the main questions.
