codegrappler··on Teens' anxiety levels dropped during pandemic, study finds
My wife used to teach these ‘useful’ classes. They used to call it home economics. Now they call it family and consumer science. Essentially the same things. How to cook, budget, raise a child, etc. Sadly many school districts are cutting these programs to make room for classes that help the students do better on standardized tests. It’s sad because there were a ton of kids who used to find their life’s passion in my wife’s classes.

How is this comment admonishing users? It looks like an attempt to put mathematical justification to a claim.
codegrappler··on The global fertility rate is falling
Which is partly true. Those children will also grow up and pay taxes and contribute to companies which in turn fund the retirement accounts of the elderly community.

Given the decline in child rates in the US we may eventually be in a situation where there is no one to take your job when you leave.
codegrappler··on For suicide prevention, try raising the minimum wage, research suggests
High risk jobs need to be compensated accordingly as well. Artificially capping wages will dissuade people from entering those fields.
codegrappler··on Survivorship Bias: The Tale of Forgotten Failures
A lot of successful people, especially in sports, say that because they’re humble. They’ve spent years putting in more work and dedication than others.
codegrappler··on Twitter to ban political advertising
You aren’t being thrown in prison or “disappearing” for saying something counter to the president’s point of view. Even with free speech rights there are still limits though. I can’t go around making violent threats to people without some repercussions.
codegrappler··on Paris breaks all-time high temperature as deadly heat wave grips Europe
For me it’s easy to accept that climate change is happening but predicting what will unfold in the next 30-50 years seems nearly impossible. Humans have historically been bad at predicting what will happen even 20-30 years in the future. The media is even worse (https://skepticalscience.com/ice-age-predictions-in-1970s-in...). Articles can be found from at least the sixties predicting the end of the earth in X years due to climate change. Can you really blame people for being skeptical given what they’ve been told over the years? On top of that, climate change isn’t the only existential threat that humanity faces. How do you rank its importance, and thus the level of focus and resourcing it gets, relative to other threats? I understand that we shouldn’t do nothing. I also understand that some of the extreme climate change proposals likely over estimate the magnitude of the problem.

Agrees. If you actually watch his interviews his main issue was with the law, not trans people.

You should definitely write. I like your style of prose.
codegrappler··on What we've learned about hiring engineering managers
I haven't considered consulting mainly out of fear. I know a few very talented consultants that struggle to maintain a steady client-base. I'm the sole income + benefits in our household and with multiple little ones, my risk taking has decreased considerably. PMing might be an option though. I've worked mainly for smaller companies, so I imagine that's something I'd have to transition to a mid/large company to find?
codegrappler··on What we've learned about hiring engineering managers
That's good to hear! My understanding was that as you move towards your 40's and 50's it becomes more challenging to find engineering roles that are willing to compensate you for your increasing experience levels. I hope I'm wrong.
codegrappler··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom (https://www.amazon.com/Closing-American-Mind-Education-Impov...) was a book I had to read multiple times. It gave me a new understanding of how deep culture and environment really do influence your opinions of the world. I spend a lot more time reflecting on my own opinions about the world and I'm much more mindful of the opinions I declare publicly because of this book.

This is my struggle. Do you go the management route for the money or stay in development where the pressure, and pay, is lower...
