code_devil··on Free Stanford course on developing iPhone software [itunes]
Yeah, I was planning to follow the Stanford Class with their notes from last Fall after I got my Mac Book(in Jan), to realize they had removed the content. It was such a relief to find out that instead I can follow the class over a Video Cast and latest content from this semester.
code_devil··on Ask HN: You're a recent grad that's working full time on your startup. How?
I am a believer in "if you're relentlessly resourceful, you can make it work :)". I honestly never considered/thought moving to a part time H1 especially in this economy. It was always evenings/weekends in my mind. But now that you mention about Part time, it seems a pretty descent option :)

BTW what/who are the "IIRC , The buxfers" ?

code_devil··on Ask HN: You're a recent grad that's working full time on your startup. How?
I think it's ideal to have some sort of part time job. In my case, I have a full time job and can't leave it for two reasons:

1) I am on H1b-Visa [More Important than #2, so didn't even think about applying for YC this summer, though I would love to]

2) I need $$$ :-)

I typically try to wake up early(6am), hit the gym, put in my 8/9 hrs at work so I am free by 5-6 pm. Now I have potentially 6 more hours till 12:00 am during which I try to get some work done on my personal projects OR go to silicon valley meetups etc Or just laze/party out completely some days. [Potentially 30 hrs in 5 days]

So, time is not really a problem, it's more of a Time management and Motivation that will carry you forward. I am still tweaking both :-)

PS: On another note, I will be up in the SF city for StartupWeekend. Still looking for people to partner up ? Anyone Interested ??

code_devil··on Poll: Where are you from?
I clicked on USA as I am located in the Bay Area, but I am from India (had come here for BS in 2001) ... I would consider myself International, unless you meant where the most readers are physically located/residing ?
code_devil··on Why kids and teens use FB and Myspace but not Twitter
I would agree with you, twitter does not have that social feeling yet, maybe because they have followers and not friends in it.

I still prefer facebook ... have had it since 2004, hardly use twitter. I see twitter as more of a way to distribute information to everyone(friends and strangers)

code_devil··on Startup Weekend San Francisco 2 from April 3-5, 2009
I have signed up as a Back End developer for the event. I would be interested to meet up with someone who is also going there and team up with them before hand.
code_devil··on Are short methods actually worse?
Methods should do ONLY ONE thing.

Example: A program to withdraw money from a Bank Account.

getBalance() // Does One Thing

if(getBalance > withdrawAmount) {

    subMoney() // Does One Thing
} else

{

Print ("Insufficient Funds");

}

Other thing, I would like to point is that if you are making the code of your function visible, then it should be properly documented and readable. The compilers do a really great job of Optimizing the code, so there is no need to make the code look smart and have no one understand it. The only place I would put real smart code is when I am coding in assembly. In that situation, there should be really good documentation explaining the reason of your smartness.

Example:

A = 4

B = A X 2

[Smart Code: Right Shift A, but it's not always obvious that you are trying to multiply by 2 here, unless you have an explicit comment]

code_devil··on Ask HN: CTO vs. VP of Engineering
In my company, the CTO and CEO are the co-founders. The CTO has a PHd and our revolutionary product is pretty much his brain child implemented by the tech staff under them. We also have a VP of Engineering that they hired. (a Director of Eng in their previous venture). However, the VP of Eng reports to the CEO. The CTO has his own set of staff and they basically brainstorm on new ideas. We engineers respect all of them, but the CTO is definitely placed at a higher pedestal because the bread & butter produect being his idea. But, the CTO does not deal with most of the engineering staff except a few members who are working under him for some latest ideas or our product in the R&D phase, not released to the market yet. As an analogy, the CTO is more like a College professor with a bunch of RA's under him :)

I am not sure what your background in your company is. Just wanted to share what i saw in my company.

code_devil··on Ask HN: Who is going to the O'Reilly E-Tech Conference?
Never knew about this, looks good but expensive. I hope they have Video Sessions online.
code_devil··on The Real High-Tech Immigrant Problem: They’re Leaving
Did you look into the following two categories of GreenCard Visa's ? (EB4/EB5)It seems you get a Visa in 9 months.

1. Entreprenurs .... You start a business and hire 4-5 FT US employees 2. Investment .... Invest 500K in some Federal designated area.

code_devil··on How To Think About Compression
check these terms out .... deduplications and wan optimization
code_devil··on Ask HN: HN Gathering in Silicon Valley?
I would suggest that you search on MeetUp.com and look for topics that interest you like Ruby, PhP, Opensocial, Iphone, etc ....

In fact there is a New Tech Meetup every first Tuesday of the month near DLA Piper, Palo Alto. They have about 3-4 demos by hackers/founders followed by networking. I have easily seen 150+- people.

code_devil··on Ask HN: What is an expected compensation for a startup yet to launch a product ?
Yes, I would agree with you.
code_devil··on Ask HN: What is an expected compensation for a startup yet to launch a product ?
Yes, he said he wont be able to pay any cash till he gets it funded. I wouldn't really mind not getting cash, because the application indeed looked pretty useful. But like you said it's better to know an exact % of the pie if it does take off, cause otherwise I will be stuck to a binding agreement. I don't know the % yet, as this part was done over email to which I politely responded saying it somehow seems low. I am yet to hear back from him saying if its low or high, based on what the total share pool is.

Also, based on my current employment, if I calculate my wages as $75/hr, then his 1000options/40hrs come out as 25 options/hr which is like saying his options are worth $3(which is insane).

code_devil··on New users: Welcome. Please read the site guidelines.
I guess a link saying Rules in the top Orange Bar would be nice. I think that's the most visible part of the HN site.
code_devil··on Ask YC: Meditation Advice
yes, he has some good techniques.

Also 'Art of Living' does some basic and advanced courses. They are helpful too.

Update: http://us.artofliving.org/art-of-living-course/index.html

code_devil··on Ask HN: What are some (good) hacker movies?
Dare I say "Italian Job", the guy who hacks into the Traffic System. I think they said in the movie that napster was his idea, but someone stole it while he was sleeping.
code_devil··on VoicePHP from TringMe to create Voice Applications
Never heard of twilio. I'll check it out and see.
code_devil··on Ask HN: Afraid I've dug myself into a hole
IMO & Experience I felt that the 3-5 years experience is a 'filter' for the recruiter to get less resumes and pick from them. I in fact sent my resumes fresh after college to a lot of companies that needed 5+ yrs of experience and they did contact me. So, I'd recommend create some simple projects in C++/Ruby/Python and put them in your Blog/Web so you can point it to them on your cover letter/resume.

Good Luck

code_devil··on Ask HN: Is it worth a back-end developer's time to get into web-design and HTML/CSS
I am often in the same boat as you are in. I would say for this current project, hire a Web Designer to complete the project. However, also try to learn HTML/CSS so you can follow the HTML/CSS written by the outsourced programmer.
code_devil··on Beautiful Web UI libraries
Has anyone used these Web UI Frameworks on top of the Web Dev frameworks like Ruby/Rails or Django etc ? How ? Links ?

Thanks.

code_devil··on Ask HN: Need A WSYIWYG Editor for Web Development Frameworks
Bump.

Any suggestion regarding how to cut down time in designing Forms and WebPage ?

code_devil··on Ask HN: What can't you do in Excel?
1. create a Table and then have an option to create the corresponding mySQL. (Relation DB Design)

2. create a mySQL Dump from the Table Data.

3. Other cool MySQL Optimizations.

code_devil··on Ask YC: Do any of you find yourself reading comments before the actual link?
I actually use the HN comments to get a feel of what the article is all about and if I see a lot of +ve vibe I venture out to read the article. I also find scanning over the comments as a way to get the gist of the article without reading it.
code_devil··on Objective-C, Ruby and Python for Cocoa
Interesting read.
code_devil··on Ask HN: New Years Resolution(s)?
It's not a New Year Resoultion, but certain goals/milestones that I'd like to see achieved :

1) Develop some Social Networking Applications for Facebook etc.

2) Learn Cocoa Touch for iPhone and Develop Apps.

3) Learn a MVC framework like Django/RoR in and out.

4) Be consistent with the gym schedule and get some muscles :)

5) TBD soon :)

code_devil··on Engaging Facebook Applications
yup, thats true.
code_devil··on Ask HN: Is making clones bad?
I think its fine. Look at even the current social networks in English itself.

Dating Sites ---> Friendster --> hi5 --> Facebook --> Orkut

                                               --> Bebo

                                               --> WAYN

                                            --> LinkedIn
They all started with the same base, a database of people that interact.

Again, the App development platform was started by facebook and now everyone else copied it. So, once you clone it you can always give it your own unique flavor with time.

code_devil··on Ask HN: Cocoa Touch & iPhone Dev Step by Step Tutorials
yeah, I want to get familiar with the basics too.
code_devil··on Ask HN: Cocoa Touch & iPhone Dev Step by Step Tutorials
Thanks ... I saw this one, i liked how they share code. But after Day-1, there is not much explanation on the other code samples.
