cocochanel··on Much of the “science” used in design is bullshit (2014)
This PDF is hilarious. How can anyone get away with so much bullshit is beyond me.
cocochanel··on Slack S-1
> We have a history of net losses, we anticipate increasing operating expenses in the future, and we may not be able to achieve and, if achieved, maintain profitability.

Well, that doesn't sound too good.

cocochanel··on Impact of a Night of Sleep Deprivation on Novice Developers’ Performance (2018)
The harsh reality. Many of the lifestyle habits simply become exponentially harder as we age.
cocochanel··on People Who Claim to Work 75-Hour Weeks Usually Only Work About 50 Hours
Seconded from another European. HN and Reddit are big chunks of the work day. Heck, people even watch YouTube.
cocochanel··on The 'Dark Ages' Weren't as Dark as We Thought
The Dark Ages are only dark to us.
cocochanel··on AI-powered laundry-folding robot company has filed for bankruptcy
Did you really have to create a new account to post this? Not folding clothes is not a solution.
cocochanel··on JetBlue has started using facial recognition instead of boarding passes
Could you please elaborate on the downsides? Gov't has your data since you were born, complete with your photos, IDs, you name it. What makes you think it's any different now?
cocochanel··on For some startups, there’s no buzz needed – Poll Everywhere (YC S08)
Is it like Menti?
cocochanel··on Instagram hides Like counts in leaked design prototype
Very bold indeed, I am curious as to how this will affect the so-called "influencers."
cocochanel··on Tolkien was right: Scholars conclude Beowulf likely the work of single author
It's already a thing, see how the FBI caught Silkroad admin. Although not in the automated fashion that you suggest, I am pretty sure the algos are already in use.
cocochanel··on Types will be part of Ruby 3 stdlib source
Why is everything moving to types?
cocochanel··on Tolkien was right: Scholars conclude Beowulf likely the work of single author
What if they had style guidelines like software engineers do?
cocochanel··on Canada Group Sues Government over Google's Sidewalk Labs
Interesting, Japanese designer Oki Sato also thinks we should have more things that are stupid [1].

cocochanel··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
"the total effect on revenues is estimated to be more than seven times the retailer’s expenditure on advertising during the study."

How is this not positive ROI?

cocochanel··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
The paper is about predicting ROI, and that is a well known problem in advertising. Now, the same author of the paper you linked, Randall A. Lewis, has a paper about whether advertising actually works [1] and it does, "we find statistically and economically significant impacts of the advertising on sales. "

cocochanel··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
Isn't that what Google Adsense used to do back in the day, i.e. show games in gaming sites for example?
cocochanel··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
Well, Google's balance sheet tells me otherwise.
cocochanel··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
This is an interesting idea. Does anyone know if it has already been A/B tested and shown to generate less profit than say building a recommendation profile for the user? I suspect that in the long term, optimizing ads for user profile would be more profitable, considering that the marketing cycle usually takes time from the initial consideration up to the conversion.
cocochanel··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
The content is essentially an ad.
cocochanel··on We’re asking Apple to change the advertising ID for each iPhone every month
What? IDFA is device universal and only reset manually by the user.
cocochanel··on Who has the fastest website in F1?
+1 for the chuckle. This is exactly how it goes.
cocochanel··on Moving on from Rails and What’s Next
Correct, they are for completely different purposes. I have the feeling that a lot of people (particularly the bloggers/more vocal types) jump into newer languages for no other reason than to position themselves as experts in said language/stack, right when it's getting more popular. I've seen this happen with Ruby/Rails, JavaScript/Node, and now Rust. In this case, it would have made a lot more sense to move to something like Elixir/Phoenix.
cocochanel··on Different ways to build a $100M business (2014)
Fantasy. Enterprise sales don't happen without a dedicated sales force, politics and influence.
cocochanel··on We should improve email protocol to allow userless addresses
Powerful for who, spammers? I don't think it is particularly useful, but if it is for some, it will definitely need to support blocking email at the generic domain.
cocochanel··on Gall's Law
git is incredibly simple and does not count as a counterexample at all. [1]

cocochanel··on Types Are Moving to the Right
What's wrong with text files?
cocochanel··on 30th Anniversary of the World Wide Web [video]
What's with the negative nitpicking? There are endless learning resources now available to people who couldn't afford an education, communities around anything you can imagine, people making a living thanks to the Internet, and the list goes on and on. Heck, I don't even have Facebook so I don't know what you're talking about.
cocochanel··on How the Internet Travels Across Oceans
This is exactly the reason why I like DigitalOcean name so much.
cocochanel··on FDA approves intranasal esketamine formulation
What other types of treatment do you find more suitable for depression?
cocochanel··on Websites using SSAI (server side ad injection)
CPM ads still out there, for brand awareness. But you'll be paying for ads that no one clicks. So most advertisers go for CPC.
