Thus the perfectly worded event invitation: "We have something you really have to see." (... "And touch.")
cobychapple··on The Markdown Mark by Dustin Curtis
For anyone else that didn't know what this guy was talking about, its the middle icon on the bottom row.
cobychapple··on The Markdown Mark by Dustin Curtis
It's hard to get a clearer, simpler symbol than that, and it's the creation of an 'open' symbol like this that I predict will play a big role in driving adoption of the Markdown format on a wider scale than is seen today.

What's with the weird use of stock corporate photography in this article?
cobychapple··on Show HN: f.ilter.us [filtered Hacker News]
Pro: Pretty cool, being able to close/hide stories I've read and don't want to see in the list anymore.

Con: I couldn't switch to browsing HN this way without a link to the comment thread for each post.

Not on my screen, this one is currently number 2 in the new posts feed, and the other is number 17 and I can click into/access it without problems.

cobychapple··on Privacy for Piracy. Exclusive Interview with Suren Ter from YouHaveDownloaded
From the interview: "When visitors search for something on the website, there’s a small pop-up that jumps out and offers you to “like us while you’re waiting”. That’s an artificial delay. We can return results in milliseconds. The pop-up and delay was my idea just to collect more likes."

This is something I'd never considered before—I'm surprised more sites don't take this tactic for other (genuine) searching/loading delays.

cobychapple··on Ask HN: Review my startup, Wehgee
Disclaimer: I deliberately didn't read your description above to emulate the impression I'd get if I turned up without knowing anything about your site.

That said, I think you're focusing too much on what/how people post content on Wehgee, and not nearly enough on the benefits people can expect from sharing content this way. For example, Twitter's landing page says "Find out what’s happening, right now, with the people and organizations you care about", and Facebook "helps you connect and share with the people in your life." — both of these are very direct ways to introduce the product.

In contrast the way your describe yours seems purely functional: I know that with Wehgee I'm suppost to share stuff in 6 weekly topics, and that by doing so I'll be "shaping the conversation" but that has no relevance to me whatsoever and doesn't communicate a benefit to me of any kind.

Also, I think you need to be clearer about the distinction between a category and a topic. Initially I thought that the hashtags were the 6 categories, but it took me a while to work out that this wasn't the case, and that the two were separate. I think you need to first make it clear what categories of content there are, and then find a way to distinctly communicate what the current topic is for that category.

Another point: How do I know when one week's topic ends and the next begins? Is it on a Monday? Sunday? Can I revisit topics/discussions from past weeks?

I think there's some serious potential to giving people a framework of topics/categories to use for posting content, I just think you could find a clearer way of articulating the benefits of this approach.

cobychapple··on AntiSpec pressures Mailchimp to work for free
For a company that exists to stand up for people getting paid fairly for their work, it seems hypocritical to expect the opposite from their suppliers.
cobychapple··on Our 3d printer is better than yours
Sure beats the hell out of the RepRap!
cobychapple··on How real people will use Windows 8
That's really funny, but I think the point was made pretty early on. It would have been much more interesting to see the test subject interact with other areas of the Windows 8 UI for a bit more of a well rounded illustration of what it's like on the whole.
cobychapple··on Homeless as Wi-Fi Transmitters Creates a Stir in Austin
Before you downvote, I'm all for providing employment for people who are unfortunate enough to be homeless, however I think the language chosen to describe the project (i.e. using the phrase "I'm Clarence, a 4G hotspot" on the shirts) is really what is causing the problem, as it seems to be what is seen as objectifying and depersonalising the vendor in a way that (as the article suggests) does the opposite of drawing attention to the person and their plight and ignores the wealth divide between the vendors and the customers.

I can't help thinking that the negative PR this is going to inevitably generate could have been completely avoided (and possibly paved the way for more permanent/better/similar experiments on a bigger scale in the future) if a different set of branding/wording had been used from the outset.

For what it's worth, I think that giving people an "honest day of work and pay" is an amazingly positive thing to do. You can't argue with Clarence!

cobychapple··on Show HN: We made an awesome way to browse and search your Chrome bookmarks.
Union/intersection could be quite useful for me too, FWIW. Might confuse the whole tag selection UI side of things (with requiring a 'clear selection' or 'clear this selected tag' type functionality too—just my $0.02.

cobychapple··on Spire.io is out of beta
Likewise. Although, looking at the examples made me even more confused: I was expecting to see some code examples showing how I'd actually go about using/accessing the API. But it just showed me an app, which could have been built using a large number of technologies in a large number of ways.

My advice? Show us how this product makes life easier than whatever it is that it's an alternative to.

cobychapple··on Font Awesome, the pictographic font designed for use with Twitter Bootstrap
I would have thought attribution using comments in the main HTML would be an easy solution if you're minifying your CSS.

Brilliant. Thanks for the clarification, and for the cool resource!
cobychapple··on Font Awesome, the pictographic font designed for use with Twitter Bootstrap
It'd be really interesting to hear from you in more detail about this process, and any gotchas that you came across during the process. If you ever get time for a follow-up blog post I think a lot of people here would enjoy the read.
cobychapple··on Font Awesome, the pictographic font designed for use with Twitter Bootstrap
Yeah that's not normally sufficient for many of the CC licenses (not that I'm an expert), as they often require it to be shown on a visible (i.e. browsable) page, such as a 'credits' page or similar.
cobychapple··on Font Awesome, the pictographic font designed for use with Twitter Bootstrap
You have licensed this under the CC-BY 3.0 license (which requires attribution 'in the manner specified by the author'), but I can't see anywhere that you've specified how it needs to be attributed if used.

Is this something you can elaborate on?

Thanks for posting! Nothing like steady, consistent growth.

It would be interesting to overlay prominent events (e.g. the passing of Steve Jobs and so forth) on this to see if/how the spikes correspond.

cobychapple··on What iOS would have looked like in 1986
I actually think the simplicity of monochrome suits the iOS home screen (and also the simplicity of the iPhone's lines) much more than I imagined.

That would be really interesting to try out as a theme for iOS.

cobychapple··on Responsive Text
I think this is a much better use-case for this kind of idea. I especially like that even if I shrink down my browser, I can still re-show the content that got hidden using the dropdown at top-right.

Maybe people's concerns about not seeing the full content could be alleviated by a similar solution for re-showing the text that got hidden in the OP's example?
