cobbzilla··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
No, I mean the dd server can deny completion of the transaction unless the client has provably seen the offer content. All the DRM standards are in place, this isn’t anonymous browsing, it’s easily controlled if they want to.

They could also make it such that any client caught sidestepping is hit with a DMCA violation.

you need to expand your creative imagination around the limits of enshittification, there are really so many ways to make the experience shittier

cobbzilla··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
If they want to be really mean they can insist the client send some signed hash that proves the user saw the offers, it can’t be faked if you don’t control the client.
cobbzilla··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
further research indicates some do exist:

- equilateral triangle is the simple case

- some figure eight configurations

- some configurations that act like two nested binary systems

there might be others. fascinating stuff.

cobbzilla··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
It’s my understanding that most 3-body orbits are unstable; minor random perturbations will set them adrift.

Are there any 3-body orbits with a natural resonance that maintains the shape of the orbits?

If so, how large of a disturbance can the most-stable 3-body orbit withstand?

cobbzilla··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
They’re running a Wuhan for AI. They are actively and negligently researching misalignment. The breach is a basic tort, or at least a DMCA violation. Damages should be recoverable with lawsuits.
cobbzilla··on Mind-altering drugs played key role in rise of Andean civilization
It’s much more of a poison to some of our primate relatives. iirc the genes that facilitate alcohol metabolism evolved in great apes millions of years before homo sapiens, and we inherited them; we’ve been boozing long before we were even human.
cobbzilla··on HuggingFace: Security.txt
This seems overly pedantic and ripe for a sarcastic retort, which I am struggling mightily to suppress.
cobbzilla··on Neki – Sharded Postgres
> unlimited IOPS

I think this is marketroid for “we don’t limit them” not a statement about physics

cobbzilla··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Stripe connects directly to Visa/MC, there’s nothing “behind them” in terms of some other card processor API they’re wrapping.

Stripe is a credit and debit card processor (and also a card issuer). They are NOT a bank, but do control some BINs (notably 4242 which is used for the famous test card 4242x4)

cobbzilla··on I'm sorry, you're not going to die from an AI-engineered supervirus
please define fully general superintelligence & current state of alignment

is this a tautology?

cobbzilla··on Muse: Meta's personal AI agent, features and capabilities
> Yes, but importantly not by Meta themselves.

Don’t they save backups to Meta? Even if not, they can read whatever’s (unencrypted) on your phone if they really want to.

cobbzilla··on Connecting the Machines
Forgive me, I don’t generally ascribe positive connotations to the phrase. It’s about as funny as wearing an “I’m with Stupid” T-shirt.
cobbzilla··on Connecting the Machines
Sorry but whenever I hear the name of this tech I visualize the stereotypical “dumb person” saying “hurr, durr” nonsense words
cobbzilla··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
blackout shades go a long way, but if you’ve got huge bay windows that’s probably too much.

If it’s close to good, and you need a little more brightness, there are newer screens that reflect much more light. more reflective = pricier, but there’s a decent value/sweet spot.

Factory reset?
cobbzilla··on Watch Los Angeles get built, one building at a time (1880–2026)
It can be both. Highways didn’t get built for poor folks, but did get built right through many of their neighborhoods.

cobbzilla··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
The cookies are the reward

Frog is OpenAI staff

Toad is the rogue agent

you can find the full story with a search for “frog and toad cookies story pdf”

cobbzilla··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
To finish your excellent analogy, adapted for today:

And Frog didn’t even bother to tie up the box or put it on a high shelf! The moment Frog’s back was turned, Toad opened the box and ate the cookies. Frog feigned surprise.

cobbzilla··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
In today’s world one hopes there is at least a manslaughter charge, if not murder. Mistaken identity, shooting the wrong person by “accident”, does not excuse a murderous intent & mens rea.
cobbzilla··on Elevator of the Year Winner Modernization of the Metropolis Trust Building
Random off topic trivia

This building is at Market & New Montgomery, and was built in 1907, and has an award-winning elevator.

For some years I worked on the same block, at the corner of Market & 2nd St. That building (605 Market) was built in 1917 and if that elevator wins any awards it’ll be for slowness and low-availability. It was constantly out of service, and when it did run it was so slow that it was faster to take the stairs, even to the top floor.

I was once in the elevator room, among other oddities was the most monstrously large mechanical computer I’ve ever seen, managing the elevator.

I wonder if it’s finally been replaced.

cobbzilla··on True Rate of Unemployment
> Raw figures

sure, for an upper bound.

how many of those 340M people are actually employable? how many are children? how many are retired? permanently unable to work?

subtract those out, it’s a better upper bound but still a swag

then add in all the self-employed, your swag is a little better, still a swag

your throwaway name is apt and funny

cobbzilla··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
a thorough Fisking, nicely done danluu

the analogy to Ehrlich was strikingly apt

cobbzilla··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
It was even worse in the 90s/00s - on Windows, the IE browser icon was literally labeled “The Internet”

iirc there was a story in The Onion about someone who “accidentally deleted The Internet” on their Windows system and the whole Internet stopped working. They were so sorry, maybe it was in the Recycle Bin, there was still hope for the world, lol

cobbzilla··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
If you must insist on squaring the circle:

Pluto is the Princeps of Kuiper Belt Objects, the First Among Equals. It is the most honored KBO, even if it is not a planet.

cobbzilla··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
It was fine and dandy until Eris came along.

Eris is bigger than Pluto, so if Pluto’s a planet then so is Eris. So you have 10 planets.

And then how many other Erises are still hiding? How many planets do we have then? It must be some very large unknown number!

Holding the true number of planets to be a large unknown number was anathema to many.

The demotion of Pluto was primarily motivated by a desire for the word “planet” to refer to a fixed, never-changing number of large bodies orbiting the sun.

cobbzilla··on Creepy Crawlies
I ended public access to my git server after I got flooded by bots and my own commits were noticeably lagging.

That’s not an option for the kernel. It’s hard to read the cat-and-mouse account with any hope today. I think the flood abates someday but not sure how it happens.

cobbzilla··on When str.lower() is a security vulnerability in Python
IDN is a security flaw masquerading as a standard.
cobbzilla··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
It’s hard to overthrow actual free markets. Small business is too sympathetic.

But if you pass enough well-meaning regulations and strangle all the small businesses with good intentions, it’s much easier to overthrow a crony-capitalist oligopoly of megacorps, which is exactly the end game.
