cmurf··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
AMEX fraud support group called me. A real live agent.

Capital One texts codes during live calls and requests the customer read the code to them.

A health care provider sends emails with links to 3rd party domain to provide encrypted email, because a) regular email isn’t supposedly not HIPAA compliant and b) apparently the health care provider’s web and app infrastructure which provides secure messaging is not secure enough for certain messages. It’s indistinguishable from a phishing attack.

Hospital direct invoicing by email, also includes 3rd party links, which takes the user to a site asking for personal information including SSN. It’s certainly phishing. Right? Nope, it’s legit, and no option to get a mailed bill once volunteering an email address.

I think half of mobile device users don’t know or can’t handle a best practices workflow.

The reality is the tech industry sucks, it’s bad at its job, gives shitty advice to everyone then goes and violates all of it leading to loss of trust.

cmurf··on U.S. Military Strikes Drug Vessel from Venezuela, Killing 11
Trump is an untrustworthy liar. It is more reasonable to assume the boat was full of migrants on a human smuggling run than anything to do with drugs.

Everyone involved in this will eventually need pardons. But this abuse will get much worse before that. The same arguments they use today can be used for extrajudicial murder on land, foreign and domestic. It's just a matter of degree and time.

cmurf··on Israel committing genocide in Gaza, scholars group says
“acts committed with intent” Both need to be proven.

The relevant case law is Prosecutor v. Bagilishema (2001).

Genocide therefore invites analysis under two headings: the prohibited underlying acts and the specific genocidal intent or dolus specialis.

Meanwhile there’s an undenied genocide happening in Ukraine that Russia boasts about committing. And on-going in Darfur 15 years after the international community declared one there.

cmurf··on Bcachefs Goes to "Externally Maintained"
There's 100s of possible explanations but, without any evidence at all, you've selected one. It's simply not a compelling story.

Disaster recovery isn't obvious on any setup I've worked with. I have to RTFM to understand each system's idiosyncrasies.

The idea that some filesystems have no bugs is absurd. The idea that filesystems can mitigate all bugs in drive firmware or elsewhere in the storage stack is also absurd.

My anecdota: hundreds of intentional sabotaging of Btrfs while writing, single drive and raid1 configurations, and physically disconnecting a drive. Not one time have I encountered an inconsistent filesystem or data loss once it was on stable media. Not one. It always mounted without needing a filesystem check. This is on consumer hardware.

There's always some data loss in the single drive case no matter the filesystem. Some of the data or fs metadata isn't yet persistent. Raid1 helps with that, because so long as the hardware problem that affected the 1st drive is isolated, the data is written to stable media.

Of course, I'm no more a scientific sample than you are. And also my tests are rudimentary compared to the many thousands of synthetic tests fstests performs on Linux filesystems, both generic and fs specific, every cycle. But it is a real world test, and suggests no per se problem that inevitably means data loss as you describe.

cmurf··on Bcachefs Goes to "Externally Maintained"
Absurd to claim it’s unusable without any qualification whatsoever.

Single, dup, raid0, raid1, raid10 have been usable and stable for a decade or more.

cmurf··on Fixing a loud PSU fan without dying
Check your credit card agreement. Some cards have a "purchase return protection" for when a retailer won't take back a product.

It's kindof a gimmick because it's easy to forget you have it, but if you have it, use it.

cmurf··on US reportedly forcing TSMC to buy 49% stake in Intel to secure tariff relief
Absolutely there is a strong component of cognitive dissonance: the truth hurts, lies are soothing.

The truth? They do not care about basic right and wrong. They voted for a rapist, a felon, a vile insurrectionist. There’s no morality and we know this based on how they’ve voted.

But also the unwillingness by their friends and family to call them out promotes non-accountability. For everyone.

cmurf··on US reportedly forcing TSMC to buy 49% stake in Intel to secure tariff relief
It’s a cult.

But also, they’re being misled. Most non-Trumpers coddle, forgive in advance, and invite Trumper friends and family to the usual social functions. This is permission. It’s helping everyone normalize the depravity.

In a very real way there’s no conversation happening because one party has removed themselves from rationality and the other party has broadcast they don’t care.

There will need to be enormous amounts of pain to get either party to snap out of it.

cmurf··on $83B Wasted: Showing Up at the Airport 3 Hours Before Your Flight
Airports are shopping malls. The article underestimates the sales being generated from a captive audience.

The show up lead time recommendation isn't followed by everyone, of course. But it produces a distribution of arrivals. The farther out, the more it moderates the peak arrival of passengers at the counter. The idea is to reduce that peak so that airlines save money not having to overstaff.

But also, if an airline is willing to set a policy that favors additional time for their passengers to spend more money, maybe they get a fraction of a percentage reduction in rent or some other kind of rebate?

We don't know all the incentives that go into the way things are the way they are.

I'm not sure how the credit card lounges make up their costs. Given Chase is raising their premium card from $600 to $800, it seems it's increased aggregate demand for such perks.

cmurf··on Univ of Virginia President Resigns Under Pressure from Trump Administration
The resignation is coerced under threat by the president, to terminate funding and student visas. Ostensibly the resignation avoids that.

However, the president is an untrustworthy liar. It stands to reason threats, and arbitrarily carrying them out, will proceed against any university at any time.

cmurf··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
Except voting this person to the presidency has given just over 1000 convicted criminals a pardon, as promised in advance. It’s an unlimited and irreversible power.

The Court has long considered that the president has a duty to follow the law, but also that the Court can’t compel the president to follow the law. That is a political question. Congress alone can stop a president by impeaching and removing them from office. Not only can’t the Court initiate impeachments, impeachment is unreviewable by the Court.

If there’s a servile Congress, it means voters can elect a law breaker as president. They are going to get a president who breaks the law.

And this is what’s happening. People voted for an abuser, a rapist, a felon, a conspiracy theorist who lies about the outcome of elections, lies that VPOTUS can and should overturn them, and even sent a mob to have that VPOTUS assassinated for refusing to comply with that illegal order. Then boasted he’d pardon all those criminals who were in his service. And despite all of this, people voted for him again.

The people got exactly what they voted for.

cmurf··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
There's no legal reasoning. If there's a D president again, this gets reversed early on.

Nationwide injunctions were saught and used by (self-proclaimed) conservatives to slow down and stop Biden immigration policies.

cmurf··on How the Supreme Court paved the way for ICE's lawlessness

cmurf··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Illegal war started by a man constitutionally ineligible to be president.

The only reason why he ran for office was to keep himself out of prison.

John Adams said the Constitution is intended for a moral (virtuous) people. Meaning, it isn't self executing. You need people willing to commit to its guidance. And yet just enough of the people gave consent to be governed to a man who sent a mob to assassinate the vice-president of the U.S. when that VPOTUS, Mike Pence, refused Trump's order to overturn an election that Trump had lost.

How can corruption of this magnitude be described as virtuous?

It could be worse.

But this is still bad, may be illegal, and isn't over yet. We don't actually know what they hit, if those sites were empty, and what's happened to ~1/2 ton of highly-enriched uranium or the regime's ability to produce more.

cmurf··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Certainly the Trump regime are.

LAPD are trained and regularly used for crowd control and protest dispersal. The guard isn’t. And for sure the Marines have no clue about policing.

I think LAPD is choosing a 1st amendment violation as the lesser failure than permitting any escalation involving the National Guard. That would quickly turn out badly for the guard, become a pretext for ever more violent authoritarianism in response.

cmurf··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
