cmurf··on The hidden engineering of runways
Yeah, the higher departure stress due to greater fuel weight at takeoff was mentioned in this video.

I'm now curious about the engineering of the displaced threshold. This is a portion of the runway that aircraft can taxi onto and use for takeoff but not for landing. I thought (assumed) that the landing was harder on the runway surface than takeoffs, hence the displaced threshold wasn't designed for that force.

The displaced threshold could also be used to ensure obstacle and terrain clearance on landing - simply disallow that portion from being used in order to create an offset from the obstacle. But I don't know whether this is a very common reason for displaced threshold usage.

-- Video also mentions https://skybrary.aero/ which I'd not heard of previously. Looks neat. I'll have to check it out.

cmurf··on FAA institutes nationwide drone no-fly zones around ICE operations
When are you suggesting this overreach began?

FAA has asserted jurisdiction below 500' for a long time: balloons and kites since 1963, ultralights since 1982.

FAA certainly asserts regulatory authority over aircraft below 500', everything does takeoffs and landings of some sort, but ground operations are also subject to regulation.

cmurf··on Yes, It's Fascism
There's no uncertainty. Republicans now openly assert the 2nd amendment belongs to supporters and defenders of the regime, and no one else.

The movement opposes equality because equality stands opposed to their need for hierarchy. It is a domination and submission movement. It boasts about its application of double standards. Double standards are not logical fallacies, when they use them they are virtues. To enjoy for themselves what they deny to others is a display of dominance.

Looks like the citizen was disarmed by an agent, then executed by an agent, then a different agent emptied a clip into the corpse.

cmurf··on Microsoft gave FBI set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops
I'm certain I should encrypt my data, backup all LUKS headers, and backup all data.

But what about unsophisticated users? In aggregate it might be true data exfiltration is worse than data loss? I don't know if that's true.

But what is true is enabling encryption by default without automated backup and escrow will lead to some data loss.

It's difficult for me to separate the aggregate scenarios from individual scenarios. The individual penalty of data loss can be severe. Permanent.

Trump, while president, sent a mob to assassinate the vice-president of the United States, and members of Congress, because Mike Pence refused Trump’s illegal order to overturn an election both of them had lost.

The current president is plainly undemocratic. It’s a matter of public record.

Trump voters understood.

cmurf··on Boeing knew of flaw in part linked to UPS plane crash, NTSB report says
Laws that limit liability promote “cost of doing business“ mentality as if lives are acceptable losses.

This is how you get mentally and morally weak bean counters running companies instead of engineers with a conscience. It’s an engineering company and yet it’s run like a bank that just so happens to have an engineering branch.

cmurf··on DHS restricts congressional visits to ICE facilities in Minneapolis
I don’t trust them either, mainly because the Republicans in Congress were not elected for their trustworthiness to honor their oath to the Constitution, but to let Trump do as he wishes.

Almost all Republicans in Congress who challenged Trump have quit or lost their elections. The survivors do his bidding.

Hopefully they still have some limits we’re as yet unaware.

That is the appeal I’m making, is for these elected officials who ostensibly represent everyone in their district or state, not only the people who voted for them. They really do still old school tally up letters and phone calls.

I’m saying before the next election, that’s what we have. And peaceful assembly.

cmurf··on DHS restricts congressional visits to ICE facilities in Minneapolis
Senator Tillis today: the independence and credibility of DOJ is what are in question, not the Fed or Fed chairman. And he says he will block Fed nominees until the legal matter is resolved.

Republicans are the majority party. The opposition party constituents need to persuade only a handful of Republicans in each house, get them to caucus with Democrats, and you have an entirely lawful, civil, non-violent way of opposing a president.

This has a greater chance of enduring success than expecting an increasing body count of people getting shot in the face to persuade more people to participate.

I am aware most Republicans in Congress were elected expressly to enable Trump. But accepting that as the intractable part of the problem? No, the intractable part is extracting more votes out of the party in the minority.

cmurf··on DHS restricts congressional visits to ICE facilities in Minneapolis
This is submission to tyranny, and it’s not safer in the long run.

The only institution that matters once a regime rejects law and order, is we the people. If the people roll over, then they are submitting to their dominators, and no one is free.

cmurf··on Chase to become new issuer of Apple Card
Year old story about the limited debit card protections, with an appalling Chase customer anecdote.

cmurf··on Chase to become new issuer of Apple Card
I'm seeing it more often. They don't say cash discount, they say they're charging a fee for using a credit card.

What annoys me is debit card fees are supposed to be capped in the U.S. But for unclear reasons many payment processors don't honor this, even large processors like PayPal and Square. Merchants tell me the debit card fee is same as a credit card.

My local government charges a 2.9% fee for use of credit or debit card as well.

cmurf··on The mineral riches hiding under Greenland's ice
OK but that would conflict with the charters of most companies. The charter instructs directors/officers to make profit for shareholders. It would be a significant undertaking to compel every company to somehow become a public benefit corporation.
cmurf··on The mineral riches hiding under Greenland's ice
Corporate charters require companies follow the law and make profit. Beyond following the law, what are citizen duties?

Public benefit corporations seem to go nowhere far enough. And I wonder if the language is intentionally vague at the outset.

For example:

cmurf··on Venezuela's interim government says it is united behind Maduro
The U.S. left the entire rest of the regime intact. Wasn't Rodriguez part of this claimed drug syndicate?

If Maduro was not (a legitimate) head of state, neither is Rodriguez.

If Rodriguez does what Trump orders her to do, which he says is the arrangement to avoid American troops on the ground, how is this a sovereign country at all?

The U.S. has become a parody of its own science fiction movies.

cmurf··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
The charter doesn't prohibit aiding people.

The charter limits the powerful nations. Rule #1 is nations cannot start wars. Starting a war is a crime.

The charter requires some consensus by the international community to authorize use of force against another country.

Article 51 acknowledges the right to self-defence. The only country that has a right to violence is the defending nation and those who aid it from aggression.

And this is, once again, American aggression. We aren't doing it because it's right. We're doing it because we can. In violation of international law.

cmurf··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Yep. It's the illiberal authoritarians. The people who need hierarchy, for domination and submission. This is why equality is an scary abomination to them.

All societies have such people. But civil societies prevent them from gaining significant power. Failing that, it's going to be expensive.

This society elected a known abuser. Of course this society will be abused. But also because of this society's global power, the world will also be abused.

cmurf··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes

cmurf··on Waymo halts service during S.F. blackout after causing traffic jams
Humans certainly are imperfect and make mistakes, but will iterate with the understanding that doing nothing at all and blocking emergency vehicles is untenable.

At the least we will fall back to incentive/disincentive social behavior. People will supply ample friendly and unfriendly advice to try to unwind the knot.

Waymo should lose their operating license based on this experience. It's self-evidently dangerous to everyone to be incapable of basic iteration. There's a whole set of law driver's are supposed to follow for handling failed traffic lights. Why have lower expectations of an anonymous car than a human?

cmurf··on Who still uses cash?
We may need to help them by looking at the POS interface and make sure they're using/requesting debit for debit cards.

I suspect the POS defaults to credit. But I've never looked at any of the interfaces.

I know US Postal Service somehow detects my card is debit and then requests a debit transaction because the credit card pad asks for a PIN not a signature. So maybe some POS have an autodetect option.
