cmicali··on Yahoo Mail moving to React
One argument for one language everywhere is the benefits you get from an "isomorphic" app (http://nerds.airbnb.com/isomorphic-javascript-future-web-app...)

Sharing code between client and server lets reduce duplication and use the same templating/rendering on both sides. Fits very well with complex single-page apps.

That said, I'm not sure there are that many apps that really need this vs. the tradeoffs you have to make going all-in on JS and the complexity this can bring.

cmicali··on Amazon Echo
This very likely uses network speech recognition, so most things (except for the wake-up word) are being streamed up and recognized in Amazon's data center (Siri, SVoice, etc all do this also)
cmicali··on iOS application architecture: MVVM, behaviors, singletons, subclassing
I think part of the reason that most apps don't use these techniques is that there are not enough examples.

The examples that are available on SO, the apple docs, and IB generated/influenced code work great for the simple case but fall down a bit when your app grows. there are much better and simpler ways to handle some of the common patterns in large apps, for example the great thin view controllers article.

Objc.io is a fantastic resource.

cmicali··on State of MetaFilter
agree - you are one of the reasons mefi is what it is. thanks for all of your hard work.
cmicali··on An Opinionated Guide to Modern Java, Part 2
We use dropwizard only for rest APIs currently. Our HTML and JS are served up with an in-house framework that has plugins for less, minimization, svg inlining, etc. We have open tasks to both publish it and make it hostable in dropwizard directly.
cmicali··on An Opinionated Guide to Modern Java, Part 2
Nice article - Many of the suggestions (single-jar deployment, metrics, slf4j logging, etc) are all wrapped up for you in Dropwizard http://dropwizard.io, which we use and love.
cmicali··on AngularStrap v2.0
We use the semi-official angular ui bootstrap library (http://angular-ui.github.io/bootstrap/)

Out of curiosity what does this give you over that?

cmicali··on Intel unveils tiny $99 MinnowBoard Max open single-board computer
Agreed - we used the PRUs for high speed data acquisition (~3.4msps.). What would have normally required a lot of outboard logic ended up being almost all software. Very much an underrated feature, although the Learning curve is not so great though for anything non-trivial.
cmicali··on Duktape: an embeddable JavaScript engine
This would be amazing.. svgo and less are the only two things between us and a node-free environment - would love to not have to install/deal with npm.
cmicali··on Element 14 Holding Orders Based On US Government Watch List
Glad to see the EEVBlog here.. I have been learning a LOT from his videos. If you are at all interested in electronics I would highly recommend checking it out.
cmicali··on Why we left AngularJS
The counter-point is always valuable!

I find Angular really helps when you have a fairly complex single-page app that has non-trivial interactions. The complexity tradeoff you make using it is not worth it when you don't have those needs, especially when you have a team of people that need to be up to speed working on it.

Knockout's simplicity is hard to beat.

cmicali··on Bootstrap 3.1 released
They switched to border-box in 3.0.

Note in 3.0 release notes: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2013/08/19/bootstrap-3-released...

cmicali··on RIP Martin Schaedel: 1985–2009
Many lives are incredible, sometimes small details, sometimes extreme events, but only a few make it a point to broadcast and paint that persona of themselves, real or not.
cmicali··on Improving Dropbox Performance: Retrieving Thumbnails
tldr: use SPDY, but until more universal support a similar custom hack is proposed

Neat hack though.. frustrating how much perf is lost due to HTTP sometimes

cmicali··on Ask HN: Where to hire designers?
I read Sacha's blog and really like the idea of Folyo, but it appears to be only for contract work, not full-time.
cmicali··on Beats Music launches
Selection, UI, and curation/recommendation all are very good. I hope this creates some competition for Spotify, because I think they need a fire lit under their product plans. (It's 2014 and I still can't save a collection of music outside of playlists)

But is it just me, or can you not fast forward / seek in Beats Music?

cmicali··on Ask HN: Where to hire designers?
Agree, although as I understand it non-YC companies are relegated to the Who's Hiring thread, which is only once a month and pretty crowded (and Jan 2014 appears locked now?)
cmicali··on Ask HN: Where to hire designers?
Thanks guys . I will check dribble again. Most of the people I talked to there were either freelance only or employed, but agreed it seems like the best place.

Had not heard of sortfolio, thanks.

cmicali··on Perspective Mockups using CSS3 3D Transforms
Seeing more and more of these extreme perspective mockups on dribble and elsewhere. Definitely makes mockups look "cooler" but it makes it so hard to read / see what is going on.

Just a little perspective goes a long way!

cmicali··on IntelliJ IDEA 13 is Released
My day to day would be significantly harder, less fun, and more frustrating without IntelliJ. Big thanks to the team for making such an incredible product.

No major updates for me in 13, but all the little things add up to a nice update.

cmicali··on Things they don't tell you about MongoDB
JIRA can a great tool, but that has nothing to do with mongodb nor the quality of the code the team produces.
cmicali··on Pencil
I don't think a $49 price point is "well out of reach" for consumer and hobbyist users.
cmicali··on Everpix, Snapchat, and the Startup Lie
I think it was covered so widely because everpix did a great job on pr and getting the story out there. I assume the story will help with either generating more offers for investment, sale, or employment for the team.
cmicali··on Why I Hate Frameworks (2005)
Thanks!

Nothing against scala specifically, just using Play-Java (which we are) means you are bound to using sbt and when debugging into play internals you are looking at scala instead of java.

DropWizard is fantastic, will check out rest-express. I think the thing I miss from both that you do get in play (and rails) is the front end templating, assets pipeline, and useful assorted bits tailored to quickly building a html/js/css/api web app.

cmicali··on Why I Hate Frameworks (2005)
So what is the right java web framework today? Play has gone down the scala route - is there really another rails-like web framework that today that would do what the author is asking?
cmicali··on The //* /*/ //*/ comment toggle trick
It's also unreadable unless you know the trick or see it, making future maintenance by others difficult. Clear and simple is usually better than complicated and tricky.
cmicali··on Arduino Uno vs BeagleBone vs Raspberry Pi
#2 was the reason we used the beaglebone on a project that requires high-rate sampling - the PRU made it possible to what we needed with almost no additional hardware (normally you'd need an extra microcontroller or FPGA)

If/when it gets easier to develop for I think it helps make beaglebone/am335x a really attractive option for a lot of uses.

cmicali··on Wish I was here by Zach Braff
I thought that every time the title was mentioned in the body copy.
cmicali··on Show HN: "Dropbox for Wi-Fi"
Loved the video - funny, a little cute, and not overdone. Great job!
cmicali··on Digital audio signals and how they really behave [video]
Amazingly well done. Clear, great animations, and does a great job of showing you exactly what is going on. I wish all learning material/tutorials were this well produced.
