cmclaughlin··on E-bikes could be the electric revolution cities need
I converted a nice traditional steel frame bike to with an e-bike kit. I would not really recommend that route - especially not if you’re hauling around a kid or gear like me. I was blowing through brake pads every 3-6 months and for most people it’s probably best to buy a nice e-bike that’s well built and tailored to the task.
cmclaughlin··on Sonos's “recycle mode” intentionally bricks devices so they can't be reused
Google Play devices offer the same functionality at a fraction of the cost.

Costco always has it
cmclaughlin··on Ask HN: How to deal with seasonal affective disorder?
It gets me too. I’ve found embracing the change with seasonal foods helpful. Buying produce from my local farmers market helps build some excitement and anticipation.
cmclaughlin··on Kuma, a new universal service mesh
Yep
cmclaughlin··on Intermittent Fasting (Alternate Day Fasting) in Healthy, Non-Obese Adults
If you're just getting started with this, I would highly recommend starting with simply restricting the hours of the day when you eat. When you wake up in the morning, your body is already in sort of a fasting state. Most people find it's not that hard to extend that period of time a few more hours... particularly with the help of caffeine. If that goes well, you can try to eat dinner earlier, fight off the urge for late-night snacks and continue to push breakfast later and perhaps even skip it altogether.
cmclaughlin··on Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series
Just the opposite for me. I find Sativa to generally lift my mood. I'm more likely to be social, carry on conversations and have interesting thoughts. Compared to Indica, which for me has more of a lazy effect. That may be great for serious pain management, but if I'm laid up my mind is more likely to go in different directions.
cmclaughlin··on Testing KettlePizza and Baking Steel's New Joint Pizza Oven (2013)
Kenji has some other articles about baking steel that mention it's excellent ability to radiate head downward and cook the top of the pizza.

Personally, I make pizza in the oven in my home and avoid baking steel because at high temperatures the seasoning (oil) burns off.

cmclaughlin··on A JavaScript-Free Front End
Can't imagine anyone that's tried intercooler.js would actually downvote. It's really nice and, in my opinion, totally addresses the author's concerns.
cmclaughlin··on A JavaScript-Free Front End
I've been using intercooler.js (http://intercoolerjs.org/) on a project recently and absolutely love it... basically, it's allowed me to develop a web app with a modern feel without writing any JavaScript. Highly recommend it!

And nitrates are likely only carcinogenic if cooked at very high heat, i.e don’t burn your bacon and best not to eat cured too often anyway.

cmclaughlin··on JVM Internals (2013)
We use it at my job for our main api which needs lots of memory. I’m on the devops side and I don’t get into it much past the deployment of the app, so from my side it’s more of a hassle than openjdk since we have to deal with licensing.

cmclaughlin··on Instacart has raised another $200M at a $4.2B valuation
Overall I really like Instacart and quite frankly, I've come to depend on it. Shopping with kids is difficult... it's much easier to plan ahead and shop when I have a little free time. So congrats on the funding!

I understand some of the frustrations about replacements. Originally the shoppers were pretty good about calling. Recently the app was updated for 1-1 chat and interactive replacement choices. However, it seems the shoppers are to busy to use the feature... I've had a few notifications for replacements, only to click on it and find the shopper has already checked out.

Personally, I accept that limitation of the platform and make sure I choice "no replacement" if there's any chance I'll be disappointed.

cmclaughlin··on Ask HN: Ruby or Python for 2018?
I understand your concerns about Django and Flask... as someone who doesn't work with either on a regular basis, getting reacquainted with Django feels very heavy... and Flask seems too minimal.

Anyway, I just started using CherryPy for a new project and would like to recommend it. I had actually used it around 10 years ago and hadn't given it much thought until recently, but it's quite simple and nice for REST APIs.

cmclaughlin··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2017)
Are you referring to gender with the f/m abbreviations?
cmclaughlin··on Quitting Caffeine
You'd need some serious ventilation. I also recommend starting with a popcorn popper outside.

cmclaughlin··on Computer Vision Syndrome
My eyes twitched for a couple months and I talked to my optometrist about it. He recommended exactly this - drink lots of water while using computers so I'm forced to take pee breaks.

Also, quinine which is found in tonic water might help... with twitching and relaxing the eye muscles.

cmclaughlin··on Bitbucket down?
Our Redis service crashed. We've disabled our newsfeed feature temporarily while we investigate further.
cmclaughlin··on Why the World Needs Another Git Repository Hosting Service
> 1) We are aware of BitBucket; it's a great service, but it limits us on the

> number of collaborators we can have, thereby stifling productive group work.

> As college students, we're always collaborating, be it for assignments or our

> own side-projects, and BitBucket doesn't make sense for this.

Bitbucket provides free, unlimited hosting for students. There's no limit on the number of collaborators. All you have to do is validate your university email address and you'll go from 5 users for free to the unlimited educational plan.
