cloudhead··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2023)
Radicle | Senior Software Eng. | Full-time | Remote (UTC) | https://radicle.xyz

We’re a small, well funded team working on a sovereign, peer to peer code forge. Think GitHub, but decentralized.

We’re looking for experienced software engineers who can work in Rust, and are very familiar with at least one of:

* CRDTs

* Networking protocols

* Git internals

* Public key cryptography

* Software supply chain security

* Peer-to-peer systems

The work is very challenging and requires a creative problem-solving mindset and good communication skills.

Email cloudhead@radicle.xyz if you’re interested, making sure to include relevant experience and code, and why you think you would be a good fit for the role.

Thanks!

cloudhead··on News Minimalist – Only significant news
This is great! Would be nice if it didn’t include sites with paywalls as an option.
cloudhead··on Ask HN: Pros and cons of thinking in public vs. in private?
I mostly think in private, though I code in public. The reason is simple: packaging my thoughts for the public takes a lot of extra time that I'd prefer to spend realizing my ideas. If I need feedback on ideas, I'll bounce it on the handful of people I know and whose opinion I respect.

How is the sun so hot then?
cloudhead··on But, aren't you folks web2?
Gosh, it's not that complicated. They're just asking if the product is company-owned or community-owned. That's the distinction between web 2 and 3; just like the distinction between web 1 and 2 was whether the content was authored by the company or the community; cf. encyclopedia britannica vs. wikipedia.

And yes, you can't just go from one to the other, it's a completely different way of running a product.

cloudhead··on What's the big deal about embedded key-value databases?
All distributed databases are designed to "always be up", that's the point of making them distributed, otherwise a single instance is fine.

Radicle | REMOTE | Full-time/part-time | https://radicle.foundation

We have some great opportunities to work fully in the open on a new stack for code collaboration, built on p2p technology. Frontend (Svelte + TypeScript) or backend (Rust).

The Radicle Foundation is a Swiss-based entity that funds the development of the Radicle network.

We're looking for highly independent people. More info here: https://radicle.foundation/join/

cloudhead··on Dogecoin Co-Founder Calls Cryptocurrency a Scam to Help the Rich Get Richer
Crypto hasn’t become anything. It’s a technology like any other, that can be used for good or bad. If you don’t see potential in the tech, fine. If you do, then what other people are doing shouldn’t matter.
cloudhead··on Are we GUI Yet? The state of building user interfaces in Rust
For Rx[0] I built a custom GUI using opengl and Luminance[1]. I'm very happy with the results and would do it again if I had the chance. I'm a Linux user, and there is no acceptable GUI framework to may taste on Linux, so this was the only option that:

* Has minimal dependencies

* Looks and works the same on all platforms

* Performs well and gives me the control I need

cloudhead··on BTC Hashrate dropped another 27% down ~62% form peak now at 2019 levels
Yes, otherwise known as optimism ;)
cloudhead··on BTC Hashrate dropped another 27% down ~62% form peak now at 2019 levels
This is basically really good news for bitcoin, since China will no longer source the majority of hashing power. It’s an opportunity to further decentralize hashing power across the globe, and for the west to take a stronger foothold.
cloudhead··on BTC Hashrate dropped another 27% down ~62% form peak now at 2019 levels
At these levels, not much. Bitcoin’s security is still rock solid and pulling off an attack is still incredibly expensive. For those who are still mining, ie. the rest of the world, mining will be more profitable until the Chinese hashing power migrates to a different country.
cloudhead··on BTC Hashrate dropped another 27% down ~62% form peak now at 2019 levels
Yes, for those still mining, this is great!

cloudhead··on BTC Endgame
There are a couple answers to this question, but the truth is we have ~100 years to figure this out, and the world will be a very different place then.
cloudhead··on Nvidia announces mining GPUs, cuts the hash rate of RTX-3060 in half
When this becomes an actual problem (it isn’t yet), the lightning network is ready to handle that kind of throughout.

I'm not sure why you would compare Visa with Bitcoin, unless you had no idea what you were talking about.. Visa does not enable one to transact without the rest of the banking system. It's useless on its own. Really pointless point of reference.
cloudhead··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
Yup, you're right. The "store of value" aspect only accounts for the price minus the premium, and the premium is typically large, especially on vintage watches.
cloudhead··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
Not all jewelery has a huge markup over the metal weight. If you buy a gold watch, you can always get its gold value back. Same with stones.
cloudhead··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
Gold's inherent value represents less than 1% of its total value. The rest is monetary premium. Bitcoin is 100% monetary premium, ie. inter-subjective value.

Another thing to consider is that people buy gold jewellery as a store of value. You don't spend $30k on a watch if you don't think it will keep its value.

cloudhead··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
Curious to know what would invalidate your current belief? It seems like half a trillion dollars in economic value is not convincing enough. So what is?
cloudhead··on Bitcoin Core Lead Maintainer Steps Back, Encourages Decentralization
Large amounts of energy used is not the same as environmental impact. There is evidence of the former, but not the latter.
cloudhead··on Who Will Control the Software That Powers the Internet?
He’s talking about the software layer, not the protocol layer.
cloudhead··on Bitcoin Core Lead Maintainer Steps Back, Encourages Decentralization
This guy has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about unfortunately. There is no evidence of any environmental impact.
