Thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks for your comment! In terms of concurrent programming in Radiance, it's likely I go for something inspired by Go's simplicity and Haskell's power with STM[0]. Actors are also on the table, but likely as a library on top of the native system, whatever it is. The important thing is that everything that involves "waiting" be composable in this system: timers, network i/o, IPC, file i/o, etc.

For the AI/OS intersection, it is indeed a very interesting design space. The key insight really is that the better the AI knows you, the more helpful it can be to you, so the more you give it access to, the better. However, to be safe, the OS itself needs to be locked down in such a way that personal data cannot leave your device. This is why capabilities-based security is an interesting direction: software should not have access to more than what it needs to operate, and you need fine grained control over that.

If you have more ideas, please write us!

What's odd is how certain people seem to be about their intuition about what is and isn't written by an LLM.
cloudhead··on Radiant Computer
Gotta keep trying then!

Yes, R' is "R prime", unrelated to the statistics language. Honestly didn't think about it that much.

Thanks for these thoughts -- I agree in principle, but we have to juggle a couple things here: while Radiant is in some ways an experiment, it isn't a research project. There are enough "obvious" things we can do better this time around, given everything we've learned as an industry, that I wouldn't want to leapfrog over this next milestone in personal computer evolution and end up building something a little too unfamiliar to be useful.

I think it's phrased that way because he's saying it would be great to have as long as you don't spend too much time on it. Doing it by hand would probably not be worth it, but if a tool can do it, then it's worth it.
cloudhead··on Why I code as a CTO
That’s the point — I and others would have the opposite reaction, it’s self selecting, so it’s doing its job. I didn’t even read the article because I thought “boring, nothing special about a CTO who codes, we all do.”

The web interface is also so laggy on Firefox I’ve started using other free offerings more despite paying for Claude..

I wish rust took inspiration.. Same story regarding moving away from llvm.
cloudhead··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
Just because you prompt an LLM doesn’t mean it ain’t programming. The job will just change from using programming languages to using natural languages. There is no silver bullet.

A mind map is a specific type of concept map, where the edges are labeled

Thank god the world doesn’t actually work this way..
cloudhead··on Rust needs an extended standard library
This doesn’t solve the supply chain security issue mentioned.
cloudhead··on Rust needs an extended standard library
Even better would be to have some of the basics in the standard library, like Go and Zig.

Low quality post that doesn’t understand how DIDs work.
cloudhead··on Radicle: Open-Source, Peer-to-Peer, GitHub Alternative
It's optimized for certain workloads around code collab, so for now we don't want to oversell it. It doesn't have to be coupled with Git, though Git is very efficient at synchronizing changes. The protocol currently can be used for other things than a forge, but having an application influence protocol development is very helpful.

Interesting idea, thanks!

The difference is that the repository id is stable, while the maintainer keys can change.
cloudhead··on Radicle: Open-Source, Peer-to-Peer, GitHub Alternative
No plans to do so - firstly we’d have to rewrite it in C, and second it would be a big amount of code for the Git project to merge.
cloudhead··on Radicle: Open-Source, Peer-to-Peer, GitHub Alternative
We tried. At first we built it on top of IPFS. It was much too slow. BitTorrent is interesting but we need a way to have mutability (repos change all the time). So we built the networking layer ourselves and the forge on top of that.

Contributions to the repo have to abide to both licenses, derivative work gets to choose only one.

It’s simple: I don’t want my code and code collaborators to be using a platform owned and controlled by a third party. Just like I don’t want my OS or text editor, kitchen, furniture, clothing, books or music to be controlled by a third party that can decide to take it away whenever they see fit. Code and open source are integral to my life, as are the other things cited above, and therefore I’m uncomfortable with the idea of using github for the forseable future.

As it happens there are many others like me, and this helps fuel our excitement and drive to get this out there.

The repository id can be derived via a hash function from the initial set of maintainers, so all you need to know is that you have the correct repository id.

The advantage of this is that (a) it verifies that the code is properly signed by the maintainer keys, and (b) it allows for the maintainer key(s) to evolve. Otherwise you’d have to constantly check the official website for the current key set (which has its own risks as well)

Can’t debate that :)

Understandably! We are working on packages for Linux and macOS.
