clort··on Show HN: Bluetooth USB Peripheral Relay – Bridge Bluetooth Devices to USB
I have never a seen a Bluetooth adaptor without the capability. Currently this laptop has an "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265" device which reports it can store 16 keys in the NVRAM. I have used the btkey(1) program on NetBSD to read and write keys, but it is basically speaking directly directly to the adaptor so should be possible under any OS where that is possible.

many Bluetooth USB dongles have NVRAM, you can write the link key for a device (eg the keyboard or mouse) into the NVRAM and then when connecting, the dongle doesn't ask the Host computer for the key. I have used this to dual boot with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse in the past.

I think the technique would be: pair in machine A (A has a link key). Then, pair again in machine B with the same dongle. Write that key into NVRAM, and machine A considers the device paired but it never gets asked for the key so just works if you plug the dongle into either machine. I don't know how the monitor thing works, does it act as a USB hub? I guess you can just leave the Bluetooth dongle plugged in there..

clort··on Five minutes of exercise a day could lower blood pressure
I'm not over 60, yet, and I feel there are likely many, myself included, who don't know what a "set of full squats" is, exactly.. when you recommend such things could you at least say what that is thanks?
clort··on Waverley, the last seagoing paddle steamer
Waverley did a tour of the UK this year I think, I saw her in Falmouth towards the end of August then a week later in Plymouth and I heard they were doing trips for a few days, they certainly looked packed out on deck. Unfortunately the day they were doing a trip out to Eddystone lighthouse (7 miles off), there was fog so I don't know if it went ahead or was very interesting.
clort··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
My parents had the soundtrack LP from the film when I was growing up back in the 70s, I loved that (and I still have a CD). The book remains one of the very few I've read more than once.

I might have missed it, but I'm not even sure it was shown to Henrietta herself?
clort··on Nextcloud: Open-Source Cloud Apps
I've seen this, I think its the web server timing out..

I use the php script updater/updater.phar directly and that works just fine

clort··on Nextcloud: Open-Source Cloud Apps
whats up with Nextcloud Notes, in your opinion?

(I've been using it for 3 years never noticed any broke...)

clort··on Human drivers keep rear-ending Waymos
> you just have to trust that they're going to do their job of not hitting things in front of them, just as you are.

Thats a very human-centric viewpoint, understandably. A human driver can only see in one direction, and should be looking in the direction where things are happening the vast majority of the time. A self-driving car can see in all directions and in fact is looking in all directions at all times. Perhaps the rules will be updated at some point.

clort··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
beacuse what will really happen is, some nation desperate to make a statement on the world stage will take a thousand small children and force feed them drugs to make 10 athletes

100 die of the drugs during childhood

700 suffer the rest of their shortened lives from consequential medical issues

perhaps its easier to just throw the 'failed' 990 into a meat grinder to ensure there is no controversy later

but sure, its fun to watch the 10 athletes at the peak of their game!

clort··on Surveilling the masses with wi-fi-based positioning systems
How does a faraday bag save battery? Normally I find that in areas of poor mobile signal, the phone ramps up the power to keep contacting towers and burns through the charge much quicker..
clort··on British Museum gems for sale on eBay – how a theft was exposed
pretty sure that around 2001/2002 I was earning little over £5/hr. Wikipedia suggest I was being paid more than minimum wage at that time:

clort··on OpenBSD 7.5
The problem with having a benvolent dictator is that the system is set up for a dictator to control things, and the chances of the next dictator being quite as benevolent are low.

perhaps Theo has a plan for an eventual succession, perhaps not. Sometimes dictators can't really conceive of somebody else running the show so they don't plan for it.

clort··on US Government funds pilot project for heated sand energy storage
seems to me that this would result in heat-loss as the air is heated quickly then ejected from the mass. perhaps the bubbled gas doesn't hold a significant amount of heat though? (but if it did, it could be used to extract the heat without pumping the sand...)
clort··on America's Drivers Agree: LED Headlights Are Just Too Bright
One issue I noticed when I rented a newer car a couple years ago, was that it automatically switched to full-beam and dipped where it thought appropriate though I only switched on low beam in the first place. I was driving a winding country road with a fair amount of oncoming traffic so I didn't really need full beam. The problem is that it only dips when it has seen the oncoming headlight, whereas to avoid dazzling the driver it would be better to dip just before they come into view.

clort··on 10% of Anguilla's GDP is .ai domain fees (2023)
I'm kind of surprised that it is so significant, though I don't know the scale.. I went to Anguilla ~25yrs ago in a small sailing boat, lovely place and lovely people but as I understood it they were mainly into offshore banking, which should really dwarf domain registrations. Perhaps offshore banking has been cleaned up? I don't think they are big on tourism, they preferred to have fewer high cost hotels than lots of people visiting..

clort··on Mimas' surprise: Tiny moon holds young ocean beneath icy shell
Wikipedia has some more information about this moon I've not previously heard of. The moon itself is composed largely of water ice and the liquid part is 15-20km under the surface. Mimas is responsible for the gap between Saturns widest rings and as you expect is splattered with craters, the largest of which is nearly 1/3 diameter of the whole moon. Looks like a disguised (or dilapidated!) Death Star.

clort··on Bluetooth keystroke-injection in Android, Linux, macOS and iOS
Yes, i am reading the title which says 'Bluetooth keystroke-injection' which is concerning on one level, but in fact the article talks about authenticating a device without user interaction which seems way more serious to me.

however, it also mentions > stay tuned for Part 2: More Vulnerabilities
