clolege··on Mastering Stratego

clolege··on Mastering Stratego
It's interesting to watch the videos they link of deepmind playing against the top-level Stratego masters [0]. I usually find Stratego to be a bit of a dull game (less elegant and more drawn out than Go and chess), but I'm a sucker for watching top-level AIs play.

Its skills for bluffing are both fascinating and a bit scary.

clolege··on Ask HN: Do you look angry while you work?
I would sometimes record myself developing at my last job. Both screen and camera. It was really enlightening to see both the faces that I made throughout the day, as well as how I could have gone about debugging issues faster.

I've since improved the faces that I make, and I think it helps my mood. It's similar to the effect of how if you smile and nod while eating something gross you acquire the taste faster :)

clolege··on Age that kids acquire mobile phones not linked to well-being: study
Treating them as intelligent young people seems like the obvious answer, although those conversations are hard, especially at the young ages that kids can access adult content nowadays.

The "best" solution in my mind, is probably filtering internet access until they hit puberty, then have the talk. What goes in the talk, idk (probably what catfishing is, promoting neck-down nudes only, sex-positivity, and maybe one or two other things).

The sex-positivity feels like the most important part though, and what I was getting at originally. So many parents (including my own) only focus on what not to do, that kids don't know what to do. So many keep doing the same things in secret and just feel guilty about it.

Is there a future where it's the norm to promote safe sex amongst teens? Or are we too much of prudes to ever touch the topic?

clolege··on Age that kids acquire mobile phones not linked to well-being: study
I meant it as an honest, open-ended question.

Would you prefer them to just not explore their sexuality?

Or explore it online with people they know, like their classmates?

clolege··on Age that kids acquire mobile phones not linked to well-being: study
It feels like it's the reactions of adults that cause most of the trauma in some of these situations.

It would be a different story if she got blackmailed or something, but it seems like she was just exploring her sexuality. That's healthy, right?

What are teenagers supposed to do during a pandemic?

> mosquitos serve no positive purpose in ecosystems and ought to be eradicated when possible

I've heard the same, but it really feels like a naïve take. We can't know for sure that they have no positive purpose in their ecosystems, and eradicating them is a one way street.

No idea where the belief came from, but it's a bit concerning how widely held it is.

clolege··on The Need to Read
Now that you mention it, my old style of editing might have been something that I learned, rather than was explicitly taught.

I used to frame writing as a painful activity, so once I had a "workable" rough draft, I would break out a scalpel and try to make it readable with word surgery. I would spend hours staring at the same few paragraphs, and it was horrible.

Now I just delete it. It feels like a clean slate, but the slate in my brain has made opinions about what's important to say and how to say it better.

The two approaches exercise completely different muscles, and what I like about the "rewrite" approach is that it exercises some of the same muscles that will help me communicate myself properly on the first try.

clolege··on The Need to Read
> You can't think well without writing well, and you can't write well without reading well.

I find it hilarious that pg chose to use two double negatives to get across this point.

Double negatives sound profound, but they use more contextual overhead to convey less information than their positive counterparts. pg is a much better writer than me, but I think it would be more accurate (and stick better) if it instead was just:

Your reading limits your writing, and your writing limits your thinking.

clolege··on The Need to Read
I've also been trying to improve my writing recently. What's helped me was to read through a couple of resources on how to write better [0,1,2], and then:

1. Apply the better writing advice to my everyday speech

2. Focus on writing down exactly what I wanted to say, and how I would have said it

School taught me to be super wordy and focus overly on the editing stage. Nowadays, I read everything I write out loud and if it sounds awkward (or not like me) then I just delete it and write it again from scratch. Oftentimes it helps to just close my eyes, say what I want to out loud, then write down what I just said.

It can turn out to be a little bit wordier, but it almost always ends up being easier to read :)

clolege··on CPSC calls for full recall of all Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards
The Onewheel seems so obviously dangerous. Any vehicle that dumps its passenger when losing power eventually will. It’s just a matter of cycles before the lithium ion battery starts dying fast.

While it seems like a simple mitigation could be to make the “pushback” mechanism more obvious (i.e. slowly decrease the top speed as the battery loses power), it makes me wonder what’s the point? Can’t we let Darwinism do it’s thing here?

> I won't give specific examples

That's too bad! I usually find honing in on specific examples as the most effective way to explore a topic. But I understand the possibility that it could take the conversation down a rabbit hole.

> I'd say a significant portion of them are completely legitimate or interesting, just doesn't fit the ideology/politics here

I've yet to come across many flagged comments (or had any of my own flagged) but this feels like a strange motivation on its own. I feel like flagging should be reserved for comments that break the site guidelines?

clolege··on Only 1% of Japan's Soy Sauce Is Made This Way [video]
The two taste waaaay different.

The Kikkoman is "just soy sauce" as I've always known it, and sipping it off a spoon tastes like a mistake. It's thin and its saltiness punches me in the mouth like a cheap IPA.

The Yamaroku is like a fine barley wine. It's considerably thicker, and I can clearly taste the wooden barrel that it was aged in. It's almost as pungent as the Kikkoman, but in a smooth, complex and pleasant way. It's almost addictive, and I keep finding myself going back to the fridge to try it again.

As to whether the Yamaroku is worth 10x Kikkoman.. it probably depends on whether you're a foodie and/or have the money. But I'd highly recommend at least trying it once!

clolege··on Undetectable very-low frequency sound increases dancing at a live concert
That’s what subharmonic generators do and I’ve heard mixed reviews.

Like, if you were to take the bottom octave of a piano pieces and replicate it on the next octave down, it could easily sound like crap. Might sound decent for some songs though?

clolege··on Undetectable very-low frequency sound increases dancing at a live concert
Where do you get your recordings from?

It bums me out that most music recording and reproduction equipment drop off drastically outside 20-20,000hz. I wish that we could open that range up a bit more, the low end for haptics and the high end for the other beings in our house that can hear in that range (dogs, cats, etc)

The new amplifiers from Purifi are incredible when it comes to delivering a flat response to 0hz, at high power into complex loads.

I’m curious to see if I’ll be able to tell a difference in how their amps coupled with their new power supplies drive my ButtKickers :)

You can manipulate data to show whatever you want. The incentive structures within the company are to blame.

Edit: Limp leadership is also to blame. Probably some other things too?

Good lighting is more valuable than art!

But also my time is probably more valuable than it'd take me to figure all this stuff out.

The sun and my waveforms will have to hold me over until something better hits the market :)

clolege··on Only 1% of Japan's Soy Sauce Is Made This Way [video]
There's something charming about the passion the owner has for such a traditional and manual way of making soy sauce.

It makes me want to help keep it alive by buying it in bulk. All of my friends and family would be happy with this as a gift, right?

clolege··on Ask HN: How do you navigate Seasonal Affective Disorder?
I grabbed some high temperature, high-CRI LEDs from http://waveformlighting.com 2 years ago and they have helped a lot. I love them because the CRI make the colors in my house look fantastic.

I put some strips around the window in my office, and plugged a bunch of A19 bulbs into a string patio lightbulb strip in my living room. Many of the bulb lights burned out quickly though, I think because they have cheap power supplies and were interfering with each other? Kinda stinks.

At the end of the day though I wish I had lights that met 3 conditions:

• Give off high CRI, full spectrum, high temperature light

• Contain simple electronics controlled by a dimmer rather than wifi-enabled

• Gradually turn on and off with the sunrise/sunset

Is there anything in the market right now for that?

clolege··on Was everyone stupid back then?
> We thought anonymous people saying what they thought in a public forum would lead to the best idea getting shared the most

This is true in some parts of the internet, such as Hacker News and Reddit. The key seems to be good signal/noise moderation and users able to amplify content with cardinal voting (upvotes/downvotes).

I'm constantly finding great, new ideas between the two websites (especially when combined with search) and sharing them with others.

On other sites.. it seems as though the drive to engage users ($$) and a lack of a "downvote" option allows the flame-bait/low-brow/spammy content to take center stage. Which eventually drives users away (-$$).

Are multiple desktops well supported on Windows now? It's been a while since I've explored it.
clolege··on Ask HN: Working in a VR Headset?
What I will say is that it seems quite unsexy.

I would be quite hesitant to use it in public, especially in the office.
