cloakandswagger··on Trump, without evidence, accuses Google of 'illegal' action ahead of election
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2019/08/05/fired_goo...

> "They made every excuse in the book to avoid taking down something that made Donald Trump look bad. And I saw a number of other incidents just like that...They thought Trump should have lost in 2016...They really want Trump to lose in 2020. That's their agenda."

cloakandswagger··on Trump, without evidence, accuses Google of 'illegal' action ahead of election
Trump's tweet references Kevin Cernekee, a former Google engineer who claims that Google has an anti-conservative bias and took actions with a goal of influencing the 2016 election.

Whether that's actually true and whether it would be illegal or not is debatable, but the "without evidence" qualifier that Reuters added seems strange.

cloakandswagger··on FBI: Delivery drivers involved in Amazon theft ring
What's there to say? Amazon is a revolving door of developers, most of which don't make it to 2 years.

It would take a year or more for a dev to become familiar enough with their domain and its systems to even know to suggest a report that would sniff out this fraud, and even more time for them to have the political capital to get support for the project.

cloakandswagger··on Stun Belts in Court
I'm fine with this. If you can't behave yourself in court, you get a zap. Either that or a bailiff cracks you over the head with a club.

It's amazing how effective corporal punishment is even past childhood years. Singapore has some of the lowest crime rates in the world, but act out there and you'll get a caning.

cloakandswagger··on How over 25 People Got Scammed into Working at a Nonexistent Game Company
I did find that quote funny. No kidding it's a win for you, by not exercising due diligence you got 25 people to work on your game for free, and you got to walk away with their work and the rights to the game. Talk about a windfall!
cloakandswagger··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
If you're confused by the downvotes, it's because the stock market is not a zero-sum game. This is a common misconception about equities. The stock market can both create and destroy wealth because it is not a zero-sum game.
cloakandswagger··on Court rules against Oracle in Pentagon 'war cloud' litigation
Do you really believe that an industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars got to that point purely through hype? No benefit to platforms like AWS and Azure at all?
cloakandswagger··on France to tax flights from its airports, airline shares fall
I recognize that this tangent isn't particularly productive since it's so philosophical and no one is going to change their mind from a comment thread but:

I have a difficult time believing that we arrived on a planet perfectly suited for our habitation and rife with resources that become unlocked at the exact point in our progress where we have technologies that require them, purely by chance.

cloakandswagger··on Pirate our games, don't buy them from key resellers, say indies
Do you have a source for that? Here's an example of the notification Steam gives you when a key is revoked due to fraud:

cloakandswagger··on Pirate our games, don't buy them from key resellers, say indies
I think the devs claiming that users simply never notice that the license was revoked are the ones who are lying.

Every time that's happened to me (for example, a time-limited version of a game or a beta), Steam presents a notification that the game has been removed from my library.

cloakandswagger··on Pirate our games, don't buy them from key resellers, say indies
If the problem is as pervasive as the devs portray it, these sites will quickly cease to exist--G2A would quickly gain a reputation for selling keys that will be useless after 2-4 weeks, and the benefit of getting the game for cheaper would be outweighed by the risk of the key going bad.

That doesn't seem to be happening though. I don't buy the argument that a huge number of G2A customers simply never notice that they've lost access to the game (not to mention what that implies about the quality of your game).

I'd never heard of G2A before this, but I'll be checking them out the next time I'm considering buying a game.

cloakandswagger··on Pirate our games, don't buy them from key resellers, say indies
Which is why I'm having trouble finding sympathy for the devs. They're complaining that they can't have the best of both worlds:

They want to sell their game through their own storefront to avoid the platform fees, but they don't want to deal with chargebacks or fraud.

They want to give away hundreds or thousands of free keys, but don't want the keys to be resold and don't want to exercise due diligence when giving the keys away.

They want to recoup their losses when fraud does occur, but don't want to expend the effort of sending G2A evidence of the chargeback to get the 10x refund.

This is called being a business--each dev needs to decide whether avoiding Steam's cut is worth the headache of being your own seller. Trying to fight the entire concept of reselling itself is a much more time-consuming and futile effort than just choosing one option or another.

cloakandswagger··on Boeing engineer breaks silence on MAX 737
Both of you are proposing an emotionally charged witch hunt.

As one of the top comments stated, embracing a punitive culture toward engineering accidents has no long-term benefits. In my work (and this is probably true in any successful organization) even the most severe screw up is examined honestly and without emotion so that it can be prevented from happening again. If the immediate response is to fire a bunch of people or throw them in jail, people are going to do everything they can to avoid responsibility and ultimately fixing the problem.

If in the course of an investigation it comes out that Boeing execs were willfully negligent or malicious, then we can start discussing throwing people in jail and bankrupting companies, but that shouldn't be the first reflexive impulse.

cloakandswagger··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
The EO requires health officials to propose a regulation that achieves the proposed price transparency. In that sense, it's an EO compelling the government to create a new regulation, not a law.
cloakandswagger··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
The ACA had a "chargemaster" rule that required hospitals to post a list of standard charges for treatments, but this doesn't include charges for office visits or elective procedures.

More importantly though, these standard fees do not include any negotiated rates between insurance providers and hospitals, making it effectively impossible to comparison shop. A hospital's chargemaster price for procedure X might be $10,000, but might be only $2,000 for a particular insurance provider due to negotiation.

That's the difference between the ACA rule and this EO; the EO forces hospitals to post the real prices for each insurance provider.

cloakandswagger··on Sanders to propose canceling entire $1.6T in US student loan debt
>I know a bunch of people who are not particularly responsible with their money (splurging) but they are beneficiaries of a lot of unearned income (interest, dividends, rent) and I have yet to hear a coherent argument for why this unearned income shouldn't be taken away and used to fund the kind of education that improves the overall wellbeing of society. This is the point where somebody tells me that those people don't have enough money to fund this kind of thing (bullshit), or that Bernie won't target them he'll target you (bullshit) or that if you tax them they'll just run away to Panama (there was a study that demonstrated that when their taxes are jacked up they didn't even run away from New York to New Jersey).

Emphasis mine

cloakandswagger··on Sanders to propose canceling entire $1.6T in US student loan debt
It's much easier to rob someone when you convince yourself that they didn't actually earn what they have.

This us vs them reductionism is seen in the early days of any communist system (the mass killings come a bit later)

cloakandswagger··on Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose working conditions
The cheapest route to moderation is automation, and I would be stunned if there isn't a thick layer of it applied before this content reaches human moderators.

My point is that ML is not a magic wand and we're still in its early days. Facebook would love to have a model that accurately identifies offensive content, but that level of AI does not exist today, and no amount of money thrown at it will instantly advance the state of the art to that point.

cloakandswagger··on Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose working conditions
As evidence of what?
cloakandswagger··on Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose working conditions
Right, so wouldn't they be highly motivated to create models for detecting it automatically? Even if it cost millions of dollars to develop, they would both save money on human labor and boost PR by avoiding articles like this haranguing them about "torturous" working conditions.

The fact is that the state of the art for ML is simply not to the point where you could build a model for reliably identifying a category as broad and ambiguous as "violence".

I would hope HN users, even if they aren't directly familiar with ML, would appreciate that it isn't trivial.

cloakandswagger··on Japan Begins Experiment of Opening to Immigration
The familiar nihilist refrain of globalism.

"We live in a global world now, homogeneity is futile."

And they wonder, after presenting their ideology as an unstoppable, all-consuming force of nature, why people take issue with it.

As humans we have the agency to control our nations and their respective cultures and genetic makeups. This only becomes impossible when you adopt a Western value system that makes never-ending economic growth your only goal.

cloakandswagger··on Epic Games Is Acquiring Psyonix
Valve has never been good at building progression systems, and that's exactly what killed Artifact.

You get no rewards for playing the game. If you want new cards, you have to spend money on packs or spend money to enter drafts.

This old fashioned "just play the game because it's fun" mentality is dogma to Valve, but nowadays users want and require the Pavlovian reward systems.

cloakandswagger··on Epic Games Is Acquiring Psyonix
>The problem, of course, is that Epic isn't developing original content

And Valve is?

cloakandswagger··on Epic Games Is Acquiring Psyonix
What do users really need from a platform beyond basic social features and the ability to, you know, launch the game?

I've used Steam chat and voice comms all of about 3 times. Discord is better.

Profile pages and achievements? Couldn't care less.

Streaming? There's Twitch for that.

What I really care about from a platform are the games that are available for it. Valve waved the white flag on that a while ago when they abandoned first party game development.

cloakandswagger··on Google Staffers Share Stories of ‘Systemic’ Retaliation

And will destroy the company in the process.

They already sunk a large military contract and are setting their sights on AI in general. If Google accedes to all the various pet issues of individuals working there then they won't have a business anymore.

This is the risk of appeasement. Google (and every company for that matter) should try a new stance: If you fundamentally disagree with the areas and methods that our leadership has chosen for our business, then find a new place to work. Working for a company while using it as a staging ground for a coup against it is unacceptable.

cloakandswagger··on Google Walkout Organizers Say They're Facing Retaliation
Because those products are unrelated to AI.

Big players will not (and are not) touching GCP's AI solutions for this exact reason: it's only a matter of time before the virtue signalers are no longer content with policing the decisions of their own company and start targeting customer workloads.
