clippablematt··on As an investor, why is crypto so hard to value?
Crypto has “crashed” 50% and more multiple times and has survived so far.

If the value goes down the network decreases difficulty of mining so it is cheaper to mine (remember these things started being worth nothing). This also decreases economic security though, we should find some combination of what security is adequate and that will be represented in the tokens.

Let’s not end up in that sad authoritarian cbdc future, instead we can build and adopt global foss systems like the ones we’ve been building the past decade. Or we could ignore it all, call it a scam, and let it be captured by VCs and governments.

Hundreds of years after the tulip bubble, tulips are still a big part of Dutch tourism with flower markets being a big attraction in Amsterdam. Because culture doesn’t disappear.

So good look with that.

clippablematt··on Bitcoin Price Tumbles After Wall Street Selloff
EIP4488 on call data expansion would result in cheaper rollup transactions.

1559 means that in mad rushes, excessive fees get burned instead of given to miners.

Both of these things help combat gas prices and dampen runaway auctions. But ultimately there’s not a lot you can do to stop people who want to outbid others for faster inclusion, without introducing other ordering rules which are hard to agree on and seem to usually introduce dos vectors.

clippablematt··on What Is Web3? Should You Care?
1) more than I get now

2) ceo of Spotify is worth estimated $5billion maybe start there, shouldn’t that (be it money or ownership in Spotify) be going to the musicians who actually make the content and who get fractions of pennies?

3) they probably don’t want to. But we can just build systems that replace them. It seems to be working so far.

clippablematt··on What Is Web3? Should You Care?
I’ve shown rainbow to a few of my friends. Shown them how to log into a site by scanning the wallet connect code and all their data moves with them and their wallet. From my experience they all really like it and prefer it to passwords and password managers. Add to this everyone getting used to scanning QR codes during COVID and suddenly what was seen as a big point of friction in ux isn’t such a big deal anymore. Give it a couple years for more social-recovery wallets to be developed and we’re good.

I’m really happy that alternatives to passwords/login with facebook/emails are taking off. Good to have options. There was a while there where sites only had a google log in and it was painful.

Much of Europe has to rent for life, but isn’t happy about it.

(at least in my experience of like everyone I know).

Nobody cares.

There is more value in being the owner of the thing everyone has, than the thing no one has.

Keep right clicking, we love it.

Thanks for backing up all the art dude. Much appreciated.

I guess you could point at some metadata/description and let each game render that how it likes?

Eg if I have a red hat nft you could have that as 2d sprite art or a 3d model or just a buff to some other stat or just ignore it.

Why wouldn’t they sell it for a couple of bucks? It doesn’t have to be expensive because it’s an nft, plenty of them are sold for pennies. erc1155 is designed with lots of varying items being created on the same contract.

Why nfts? Because it’s easy to do today and has been getting more and more popular over the past three years. It seems people like them.

People don’t want to download files and import them into programs. Having one login(wallet) that you connect to anything you want and it takes your data and belongings with you seems pretty neat to me.

clippablematt··on Notes on Web3
If you want a programmer/documentation approach then GitHub and developer forums are where you will get the best shill free discussion, read the eips/ercs on github and the eth cat herders forum.

https://eips.ethereum.org/

https://ethereumcatherders.com/

Play with the tools like https://eth-brownie.readthedocs.io/en/stable/

https://hardhat.org/

https://www.cairo-lang.org/docs/hello_starknet/index.html

Note these are eth focused, but there is overlap with zcash/cosmos/polkadot and the many evm chains that now exist.

I’d also recommend: https://gov.yearn.finance/ and https://forum.makerdao.com/ for insight into how protocols are managed.

clippablematt··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
Youre almost there. But its more like tens of thousands of people putting hundreds of billions of dollars on the line to say that they witnessed the author sign your book, verifying your claims to whoever challenges them.

Which turns out to be pretty useful and maybe have value.

clippablematt··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
That’s on them and their reputation. Why would an artist intentionally damage their community and legitimacy.
clippablematt··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
Nobody in the nft space cares about this. It’s being shared around and everyone thinks it’s funny that there are people so angry about nfts and that they think this is a “gotcha”, people are happy the content is being distributed and recorded by all the seeders.

It’s wild how divisive nfts have become. I’m pretty sure everyone has such an abusive relationship with money and value that they’re blinded by it all and fearful of anything that embraces it. That probably makes sense as an attitude to have, but it’s also silly.

clippablematt··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
Yes. People will spend millions of dollars on this because belonging to a community is about the most meaningful experience we can have. People will dedicate themselves to that sense of being. See football clubs, churches, political parties, chess clubs… We spend our lives on computers, digital artefacts and communities will come to be the most expensive items ever.

This has been coming a long time. I have about 3000 hours in guild wars 2, when I log in I’m always so happy I have my legendary longbow. If they’d have been nfts that would be amazing. I’d love for that metadata to travel with me across other digital worlds.

clippablematt··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
People focus on the money, so walk away thinking “scam”.

Legitimacy, reputation, community. These things are scarce and important.

People like nfts. It’s pretty fun minting an nft on my own contract, then going to opensea and connecting my wallet and there it is. Then I go to Zora and connect, and there’s my files again. Then to showtime, still there. Open rainbow on my phone, everything goes with me.

Add on top of that resales, a royalty system, access keys to discord channels and tv shows, programmability so I can plug together my files however I like. Maybe I add a rule that you have to share the file with other people or it self destructs. Or you have to pet it like a tamagotchi.

All of the content is still freely accessible. NFT != DRM. So I can listen to all the music and see all the art. And I can have ownership of the things that are special to me. I spend 12hours a day on computers, why would we think digital artefact shouldn’t be valuable. Why would we think people wouldn’t want to belong to clubs and have a way of showing ownership of items relating to them. With a consistent way of referencing the data and signatures. All on the same api.

Yeah you could use pgp and share torrents and pay artists over Patreon.

But this is easier, faster, and more fun.

clippablematt··on “Let's Run The Experiment”: about DAOs and the future of organizations online
This sounds great, got a link? Or is it still in dev?

We keep trying things with our coop, but we often just fall back on google sheets for everything - which everyone hates but it’s flexible enough to do what we need and we all know how to use it.

clippablematt··on Id Software Goes After Doomscroll
Time consuming == expensive.

If you engage with the case and the legal system you aren’t at work, you aren’t developing your product/company, you aren’t spending time with your family. You spend you time doing something other than the thing you want to be doing, you sacrifice all the possible opportunities you could have had doing other things.

If you pay a lawyer or if you do it yourself it is expensive.

Even if you only spend half an hour writing an email, that’s time you’ve lost, and that time is more valuable to you on a small scale than the cost for the legal department of a massive company that can have someone writing emails all day and eating up all your time.

clippablematt··on Debit cards are hidden financial infrastructure
Had five years or so of that awful cycle. It’s interesting when you meet people who haven’t experienced living under the brutality of the banking system. Overdraft, payday loans, high interest credit. They think it’s all fine. Fear of overdraft fees is a real class divider. One thing I really remember is being absolutely broke, and a guy from the bank calling to see if I’d be interested in taking on a credit card “we think it’ll help you out right now”, I’m so glad I didn’t. I think the same people also fail to see the passionate drive it generates, I’ve been working in crypto a few years now and there really is a shared hatred for the big banks, with many people feeling abused by those systems. The result is a lot of politically driven people, who now also have raised funding for the next few years, who’s goal is to make those places irrelevant and create as many other options as possible.
