cl3misch··on Why I use Firefox
Yeah, sure. Just writing "Google can" is misleading though.
cl3misch··on Why I use Firefox
> The user’s data is stored on the browser vendor’s servers, and this data is of course encrypted. But can the browser vendor decrypt this data? Google can.

Can it? You can set an additional password for synchronization. I was under the impression this implies end-to-end encryption.

Of course, Chrome might send this data back to Google once synced and decrypted by the user. But Mozilla might do that just the same.

Thank you for this website!

cl3misch··on Neat Parallel Output in Python
This is indeed neat, but I would be surprised if there wasn't already a library for such multi-line functionality.
cl3misch··on SN Pro Typeface
You could just install them yourself? Distro ISOs are already large enough as they are.
cl3misch··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
It is privacy with respect to government surveillance and the like. Not the kind where you mistrust your contacts.
cl3misch··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
I figure the verification process is pretty expensive.

No, this is not my work.

cl3misch··on How to copy a file between devices? (2022)
Sure, but you can't upload from a client device. You can only provide exisiting files on the host.
cl3misch··on Show HN: Play the game I'm developing directly on its website
FWIW, it works fine for me on Firefox on an aged laptop (Wayland, Fedora 39)
cl3misch··on Show HN: Improve cognitive focus in 1 minute
> views == $$

No, in the current Youtube ecosystem it's "watchtime == $$". Maybe you meant that anyway, because it matches your actual comment way better.

cl3misch··on scrapscript.py
No, they build the APE with a docker container. The APE itself is... actually portable.
cl3misch··on scrapscript.py
That sounds very interesting! I probably could hack it together myself, but do you happen to have a writeup on that, or maybe some pointers on how to include the numpy-scipy stack into the executable?
cl3misch··on Escaping surveillance capitalism, at scale
Or an append-only, E2EE backup to another Umbrel at e.g. your parents house?
cl3misch··on Decimal Time
I think you do memorize them, albeit not consciously. The results of operations on small numbers are "cached" in your head while operations on large numbers are subdivided into more operations on smaller numbers, and so on.

I guess OP meant that for a base-60 system we would have to do a lot of caching.

cl3misch··on Inner Speech
Not more or less than someone who verbalizes their thoughts more. I would think it is orthogonal to inner voice. Do you think otherwise?
cl3misch··on Inner Speech
Maybe not the whole problem, but yeah, I also wonder about what people mean with "inner voice" respectively.

I do think though that I verbalize less than other (maybe most) people.

cl3misch··on Inner Speech
The term "Non-Player Characters" for fellow humans is incredibly condescending. Please acknowledge that every human is a player character. Albeit with a different quest and skilltree than you.
cl3misch··on Inner Speech
This may be surprising, but I indeed can "ask myself" (aka. think about) things, without explicitely verbalizing the question in my head. "Thinking" is more abstract, but it can be faster that way.
cl3misch··on Inner Speech
I don't have an inner voice myself. So I asked myself whether the authors of the Plato post can't imagine that.
cl3misch··on Inner Speech
> So I wonder if the people that wrote this article are unable to fathom that people without an inner voice exist?

I asked myself the same. There was a famous Reddit thread a couple years ago from a person who recently learned they did not have an inner voice, which made myself realize I also don't have one. I don't have the link saved and there seem to be a couple of such posts, but this one was pretty impactful in my bubble.

cl3misch··on Show HN: GodotOS – Fake operating system interface made in the Godot engine
From the screenshot:

> GodotOS is a fake operating system

Is it fake, though? Does the term "operating system" imply the level of hardware it's running on? Otherwise, even if it's running on top of another OS, it's still an OS.

cl3misch··on Micro Beast: Self contained 8-bit computer kit in a box
You sent me on a Collapse OS and Forth rabbit hole. Apart from the technical appeal I like the sober writing style of its author and the website. I do not think the postulated collapse of global society is imminent but I am glad that this project exists.
cl3misch··on Fastest autograd in the West
Jax is unrolling for-loops during compilation. I don't know about the hypothetical performance of canonical Jax code for this example, but the comparison as it is seems unfair.

cl3misch··on Julia solves the 2 language problem, however it creates the 1.5 language problem
I have been asking myself the same question. Have not heard from it for a while and did not check myself lately. After the initial release some months ago I decided to wait on it and see if someone else comes up with a non-business usecase, but no luck so far.
cl3misch··on Julia solves the 2 language problem, however it creates the 1.5 language problem
I'm a researcher, so my applications are fairly small in terms of "business logic". Virtually all compute is spent in numerical procedures, not in the Python glue code. I am not writing a server backend ;-)
cl3misch··on Julia solves the 2 language problem, however it creates the 1.5 language problem
Jax has turned out to be what I expected Julia to be. Write textbook-like numerical code and get good performance because the compiler is smart.

Maybe Julia is so focused on performance that the user experience suffers. Jax (on CPU for non-ML) feels like 80% performance for 20% work, while Julia would be 100% for 100%.

> What would that be like, I wondered, as his words floated gently through the space above my head, to just be interested in something, not as a stepping stone or as a resume line, but just to sit down and count the paths, just because you wanted to know how many there were?

Not that great, necessarily. Sometimes I wish that I could simply be happy with a "normal" job that pays the bills. Instead of feeling like I have to pursue an academic career, just to be able to work on the problems I am interested in.

These pixelart games are incredibly beautiful. For me, the gameplay itself suffers a lot from intentionally slow animations which showcase the pixelart. The movement does not feel tight and the game is not fun for me.
