cjmcqueen··on Operation Rosehub – patching thousands of open-source projects
Googler here, 20% projects are very real. It's a flexible tool between employee and manager that gets used in a lot of ways. The only recent guidance was that 20% projects should benefit the company. And, mileage will vary depending on the relationship between employee and manager. Some employees and managers use the program well, others don't do as good of a job, but it's still very alive and well.

IMHO, this is a good example of 20%.

cjmcqueen··on Introducing Cloud Spanner, a Global Database Service
I would disagree about the character of the situation. This isn't about people putting eggs in a few baskets, it's that it's more efficient to have centralized chicken coops instead of every family in the world owning their own chickens.

Now, you could play with that analogy further and see some issues as well, but I don't think the issue here is centralized failure; all these data centers/"clouds" are at least good. The Cloud is about businesses focusing on core business and not supporting functions.

[Disclosure, I work on the Google Cloud team, I'm biased]

It's Google Wave.
cjmcqueen··on TensorKart: self-driving MarioKart with TensorFlow
Best part, "With this in mind I played more MarioKart to record new training data. I remember thinking to myself while trying to drive perfectly, “is this how parents feel when they’re driving with their children who are almost 16?”"
cjmcqueen··on Employee sues Google for 'illegal' confidentiality policies
Yes, you do have duty, but not in email. Full disclosure, I'm a Googler. And, thankfully every verbal complaint or concern I've made has been addressed and resolved.
cjmcqueen··on Employee sues Google for 'illegal' confidentiality policies
Yes, this!
cjmcqueen··on Jasonette – Native App over HTTP
But do phones have to be so powerful? If they are dumb terminals, could we get smaller form factors, longer battery life and make them more disposable for the billions of people that cant pay $$$ for a device?
cjmcqueen··on I just subscribed to 60 blogs via RSS and maybe you should, too
This is the exact same path I'm heading down. I had hundreds of feeds in Google Reader and am slowly reconstructing my news sources after outsourcing to social media or a few blogs. What i would love now is a service that merges similar stories into bundles. I wonder if something could be made that can bundle opposite positions on an issue as well.

Aren't you suppose to publish a book before you step down from a role? Seems to be the Silicon Valley trend...
cjmcqueen··on Facebook will force advertising on ad-blocking users
Your tailoring from Facebook might be unique or mine is. I find the stuff they serve up just plain wrong. Or, it's one sided and I see the same ad over and over and over again.
cjmcqueen··on Here Are Google, Amazon and Facebook’s Secrets to Hiring the Best People
I hire people at one of these companies, I thought this was sarcasm because this seems like a long list of what not to do.
cjmcqueen··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
I can't say I "love" TechCrunch, but it is built on WordPress... Although, I see your point about generic themes.
cjmcqueen··on Hillary Clinton Urges Silicon Valley to ‘Disrupt’ ISIS
As a citizen of the US and fledgling "disrupter"; my answer is "No." That's not how disruption works.
cjmcqueen··on Facebook’s Piracy Problem
Really tough for a small creator to police without tools. I think the lack of tools is the real place where Facebook is going to see trouble.

cjmcqueen··on Google I/O 2013
This is actually pretty cheap considering the event. NAB, not strictly a "tech" event, but still geeky, is $1200+ and O'Reilly's Fluent conference (JavaScript) is $1200-2000, depending on when you register.
