cjaackie··on Hetzner cuts traffic on US VPSs, raises prices
It’s kind of not the brightest to both raise prices and reduce services at the same time, who’s in charge over there? Maybe I’m missing something ?
cjaackie··on Malware can turn off webcam LED and record video, demonstrated on ThinkPad X230
It’s fun to find the intel 8051 in literally everything, this model webcam being no exception. So is it the most ubiquitous cpu ever or what?
cjaackie··on Lonely individuals tend to think and talk in an unusual way, study finds
Interesting premise but did this article _feel_ off to anyone else? Maybe it was me , but did it seem a bit redundant while also not saying a whole lot?
cjaackie··on A programmable FPGA SoM in the tiny microSD form factor
I was actually lucky to have gotten a FOMU from mithro years ago at a hacker event. It was really fun to play around with micropython on the RISC-V softcore [0]! Thanks to RE the entire toolchain (formerly yosys) is open source for the lattice ICE40 [1] and they continue to add more fpga bitstreams like the ECP5.

If anyone is looking for a cheap (~$15) and larger fpga board to tinker with, look no further than the ColorLight 5A-75b [2]

cjaackie··on Retro beige PC case goes from April Fools' joke to retail
Sorry, do you this could be a marketing team ploy to generate buzz? Maybe I’m just possibly being silly.
cjaackie··on Maslow 4: Large format CNC routing made accessible
I was skeptical of the safety of building this until I saw it was an off the shelf dewalt with special parts installed. It’s more reassuring that it’s core has been through rigorous testing by a reputable manufacturer.
cjaackie··on I Don't Have Spotify
It was such a beautiful ui and ux , elegant really. It’s a shame yet I wonder how could it have been profitable. There’s really not a whole lot to monetize unless I’m missing something.
cjaackie··on A Brief History of Cyrix
I remember the excitement of scoring a surplus Cisco asa 5505 for a reasonable price and immediately cracking it open to see what was inside. To my amazement - the cpu had an AMD logo! I went down the rabbit hole of finding out what this mysterious chip was and turns out it was one of the cyrix/via/amd Geode SoCs mentioned by the writer.
cjaackie··on Making Electronic Calipers
Yes I remember seeing this video when I came out and he explains it quite well. I don’t know who was the first to use a linear encoder in a digital caliper but it’s ingeniously simple. And omg have I gone through some LR44 with my battery eating clone as well, good to know I’m not alone.
cjaackie··on Oxide cuts data center power consumption in half
A lot of these concepts hail from the Open Compute Project[0] which I might have missed being mentioned in the page. ORv3[1] is a 21” rack design that exploits the fan cube law, basically - a lot less power is needed to push the same volume of air given a larger fan blade diameter. It’s a neat cooling concept I think about often.

cjaackie··on Facebook building subsea cable that will encompass the world
hyperscalers are amazing, it's hard to comprehend what's the inflection point financially for them to undergo such a massive investment. Just a matter of time I suppose given all the other things you do at that incredibe scale.
cjaackie··on [dead]
Tyler the Creator, his 7th studio album Chromakopia - just released this past week - there's a unique font used in the cover art.
cjaackie··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
so that's the cool part, I think, instead of wasting time on socmed and news cycle composting, waste time on this instead. I think this is the general direction all media is headed, regardless of whether one agrees with it or not. Feed it whatever you want and it will shuffle together a plot, just for you.
