cj··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
I always wonder what makes people take the other side of this argument. They do it quite passionately. Why actively encourage viewing LLMs as human? Who is that benefitting?
cj··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
To me, it’s the equivalent of “HN is turning into Reddit” - it’s just a complaint without adding to the discussion.

HN already has a feature for that. Just flag the article!

cj··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
> Are you saying that all of them are actually losing money?

Are you saying these companies are operating on anything resembling a sustainable business model?

I think not!

If OpenAI needs to impose 5 hour limits during a time where they are aggressively trying to grow market share, what do you think they (or whatever the winning provider is) will do in 5 years once they IPO and need to boost margins?

They won’t be as friendly with usage caps as they’re being now.

cj··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
The entire market is subsided more than it is competitive. The market wouldn’t exist the same as it does today if it weren’t being propped up. Thats the point.

I remember the days when I had a $2000+ credit balance on Uber because I mastered their referral program. “Free” uber blacks for 2 years!

When you’re using free shit that you should probably be paying more for, it’s good to not fool yourself.

In the Uber example, the fact that Lyft also existed at the time didn’t matter to me as someone happily riding around the city in Uber Black for $0. Unfortunately Lyft’s referral program wasn’t so lucrative so I couldn’t switch…

It’s good to be aware when you’re buying something that’s subsidized. No need to downplay the importance of awareness.

If we want to whip out the dictionary:

> unsolicited usually commercial messages (such as emails, text messages, or Internet postings) sent to a large number of recipients or posted in a large number of places

“Usually commercial”

“Or posted in a large number of places”

I think we can stretch this definition to describe what’s happening here. What’s the point in arguing this

cj··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
This is partly why I like to read HN comments. People here go above and beyond in ways I would never bother. Reading other's experiences saves me from going through it myself.

There's no need to test mail services first hand. Just read up and do some rudimentary research.

cj··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
"long history of prevailing in court" is another way of saying "Google isn't being punished as much as they deserve"

> Their job isn't to make people happy.

Sure, but I think we can all agree the US legal system very, very, very rarely issues any ruling that materially punishes a corporation. Even the worst of the worst typically get off very easy.

Do you disagree with that?

cj··on ChatGPT ad targeting is garbage
Maybe we should look at paid media as a honeypot.

Without paid media, marketing spend gets pushed to “organic” and “content marketing” aka blog spam and other crap.

cj··on 1kB Website as Status Symbol
Aversion to AI speak will turn into desensitization.

And desensitization will eventually turn into a preference for AI speak. (Perhaps not the HN crowd.. but definitely for the average Joe)

People prefer reading things in a tone/style that's comfortable and familiar to them. Writing in a way that mimics LLMs checks those boxes.

cj··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Now compare that to why people don’t want Claude in their commit messages or PR descriptions.

Clearly there’s no pride in using agentic coding (if anything, maybe it’s the opposite of pride..). I don’t think most developers want to publicize their use of agentic. But I could be wrong.

cj··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Out of curiosity, do these Claude commit messages fall into the same category of "it's annoying but not worth the effort to turn it off"? If yes/no, why?
cj··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Funny to compare it to “Sent from iPhone” that Apple appended to emails by default way back when.

It was an ad, but nobody cared because using iPhone was a point of pride.

cj··on No AI Fridays
And what am I supposed to do when I hit a wall solving a problem? Just sleep on it?

Sarcasm aside, I think there's a real phenomenon of AI removing the experience of getting stuck on a problem (where often I'll wake up the next day with a perfect solution in my head ready to implement). The same way social media removed the experience of "being bored".

cj··on “Weird” is a weird word

cj··on Tracking Costco gas prices
In rural America, getting someone into the parking lot isn’t much different than in the front door when the next box store is 10-20+ minutes away.

Apple Text Edit vs Pages.

cj··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
If you’re actually intended to Paint in MS Paint, as in create things from scratch, you need to limit the upper end of quality for it to be usable.

Otherwise you might as well use photoshop.

(But no I’m not kidding myself, I realize the days of using Paint to actually Paint are over)

cj··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
Pixelation was a feature back in the 90’s and 2000’s.

But yea, I guess it’s a bug in 2026.

cj··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
It sounds similar to Lipoprotein(a) blood test for cardiac risk.

It's (almost) purely determined by genetics. You can't do anything to improve it, other than to improve every other cardiac related risk factor.

(There are some experimental drugs in the pipeline, though)
