city17··on How to stop being “terminally online”
Some interesting thoughts, but an excellent example of why we use capital letters. Uncomfortable to read in all lower caps.
city17··on I used DALL·E 2 to generate a logo
The tech will get better, but ultimately there still has to be a human who decides 'that's the one that looks good', which strongly depends on someone's taste and skill in identifying what a good image looks like.

There will probably be less need for designers of 'lower quality' simple images though.

city17··on Ask HN: Where can I find small companies to work for part-time?
Would also be interested in hearing about this. Especially finding clients with 10h/week projects can be difficult.

city17··on A Random Distribution of Wealth (2017)
This is an example where philosophical questions get detached from reality. While it can be an interesting thought experiment, intuitively you already know the answer, and if you would live through civil unrest yourself you would stop doubting that answer for sure.
city17··on Apple unveils all-new MacBook Air, supercharged by the new M2 chip
Dollar has been appreciating rather fast the last few months compared to the pound and euro.

city17··on A brief rant on the future of interaction design (2011)
I also have a preference for more tactile inputs and was looking around earlier at some different controllers, e.g. MIDI sliders, knobs, buttons that you can connect to pretty much any application. Or alternatives like the Surface dial or Streamdeck.

Interested to hear if anyone has a setup like that that feels nice and is actually useful?

city17··on You Don’t Need a UI Framework
Good article, although (als he also specifies in the article) it depends on your use case. For some people a big UI framework like Material UI is the right choice.

But for many who are using it right now it is excessive, and they would be better off with a very simple 'headless' library with a few simple components that guarantee accessibility and speed up dev time, like dropdowns and modals. You don't need to have a whole theming system behind it.

city17··on Design of This Website (2021)
I think there's a negative correlation between detailed and overanalysed design philosophies and actually good design (or at least a tipping point of too much analysis after which it becomes negative). This seems to be a good example of that.
city17··on Show HN: I Made a Stupid Game
The site forwards me to some UK home loans website?
city17··on Why not hire part-time developers?
Just curious, how many hours have you been working mostly? 32 or even less?

I'm also looking for a part-time dev role in the Netherlands and having some trouble finding anything under 32 hours. I could've signed several jobs already if I were willing to go full time.

city17··on Twitter restricted in Russia amid conflict with Ukraine
False equivalence. There's a big difference between blocking state-owned media that are direct propaganda tools (e.g. RT, although I don't think they're actually being blocked anyway) and blocking a general social media platform that has opinions from all sides on it.
city17··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
I could see this being helpful with staying in touch with people you don't want to be friends but you want to keep up to date with professionally. Using this for your personal life is just sad.
city17··on Ask HN: Why the obsession with note taking?
I think it's mostly procrastination. Spending time on tools and methods means avoiding doing any actual work. For 99% of cases, just writing down a few points with pen and paper will do the job. Most of the value of note taking comes from writing it down anyway (which helps memorize it), not actually reading the notes at a later point in time.
city17··on California Considers Doubling Its Taxes
I'm curious to see how a single payer system will work when the entire industry is profit-based. In most countries that with a single-payer healthcare system, all the medical institutions are either publicly funded or owned, or have some sort of cap on profits and monetary incentives. California as a single state with a single-payer funding having to then give all that money to profit-driver medical institutions seems like a very tricky situation.

city17··on Is Web3 Bullshit?
Whenever I read about Web3 I always get the idea the feeling it's an entirely self-interested idea or movement, and there is nothing idealistic about it. Instead of control being with a single corporation, control will be with an exclusive limited group of founders who got in cheap, and to which access is sold at a significant premium.

It pretends to democratize things, but rather moves from a monopoly to an oligarchy, which works great for the 'in' group but not necessarily for those outside it.

city17··on Business Essentials
Thought the same. ASAP seems just as meaningless/vague as soon?
city17··on Show HN: 40k HN comments mentioning books, extracted using deep learning
Great idea. I think it's interesting how the hivemind decides what are great books. There are some objectively great books in the list, but also very debatable ones.

For example, The Design of Everyday Things has some interesting content, but I found it almost unreadable. It's such a poorly organized and written book that its design seems to go against almost every rule discussed in the actual content. Keeps surprising me that this is such a highly praised book.

city17··on Canistilluse.com
Not sure what's wrong with some aspects of an API being deprecated over time. Of course if it's not done prudently and you can't rely on core features to work anymore after a short period of time then it starts to get annoying. But opposing any deprecation at all seems like the other extreme.
city17··on Boring Avatars – React library to generate custom avatars
The designs are really nice, but I feel they should be more differentiated. Otherwise you can't recognize a particular person by their avatar and you might as well use identical ones for all of them.
city17··on Most of what you read on the internet is written by insane people (2018)
Agreed. Funny thing is that even if you're aware of this it can affect you. I noticed this recently when I spent a bit of time watching 3D printing videos to find a solution to a small problem. When I was done watching this video I felt like I absolutely had to buy this much more expensive printer to get any decent results, which was completely false.
city17··on Vercel raise $40M Series B
I switched from S3 + Cloudfront to Vercel, simply because it's even easier.
city17··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
I think the key is not whether they'll have to divest current platforms, but if they can acquire whatever will be the next popular platform. If Zuckerberg sells Instagram, but can still buy the next platform, he'll always maintain his monopoly.
city17··on 27-inch iMac gets a major update
Seems like they're going to save the new redesign of the iMacs for the first ARM releases.... at least I hope, otherwise it's really disappointing.
city17··on Gatsby raises $28M Series B led by Index Ventures
Isn't Wordpress a perfect example of that model?
city17··on Gatsby raises $28M Series B led by Index Ventures
Could someone explain what Gatsby's path is to eventually making a lot of money? I'm always a bit wary of open source frameworks that claim to be all about their community getting funded with lots of venture capital.
