citizenkeys··on Prizeo (YC W13) Helps Celebrities Tap Their Fans For Charity Fundraising
Prizeo seems very similar to GiveSpark ( http://givespark.com/ ). GiveSpark was funded in YCW12 ( http://ycuniverse.com/ycombinator-companies#ycw12 ). Is there any connection between the two companies?
citizenkeys··on Ask PG: Has an applicant been accepted after prior post-interview rejection?
It would also seem the team would be more comfortable in the interview having already gone through the experience and met the interviewers.
citizenkeys··on Ask PG: Has an applicant been accepted after prior post-interview rejection?
Did the team you mention do an interview on the prior time they were rejected? My original question was specifically about applicants that had done an interview with YC before they were rejected.
citizenkeys··on Fork My Dongle
If you could somehow merge the two campaigns, then you'd be able to reach your goal faster. I know the Watsi.org campaign somehow offered both regular and ladies' sizes ( http://teespring.com/hntees ). There wasn't a way to add the ladies' sizes to the original campaign?
citizenkeys··on Fork My Dongle
I am considering linking to this on ycuniverse.com because it uses TeeSpring.com. However, the shirt doesn't seem available in ladies' sizes. Given the cause, I would think you'd want to make the shirt available in ladies' sizes. Can you enable that option?
citizenkeys··on Tell HN: Best part of the Big Ol' Python PyControvery is women saying "Dongle".
I agree she had an absolute right to complain. My point is simply that she had no legal cause of action against either the guys or their employer. So what did she really have to gain through this controversy? And did those guys really deserve to lose their jobs over some childish comments?
citizenkeys··on Tell HN: Best part of the Big Ol' Python PyControvery is women saying "Dongle".
But on a more serious note... As the woman did not even work at the same company as the guys she complained about, she really had no recourse except to get up and move. That sounds very inconsiderate but it's actually the law. In a legal sense, anybody in a public place, whether it's a bar or a programming convention, has a constitutional right to say what they want.

Every employer is responsible for knowing various workplace regulations, including sexual harassment laws. There are only two types of sexual harassment, both of which require working with the alleged offender, "quid pro quo" and "hostile environment": http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/types-of-sexua...

If the woman had worked for the same company as the allegedly offensive guys, she absolutely would have a claim based on them creating a hostile work environment. However, the woman at PyCon didn't work for the same company as the people she complained about. And therefore she had absolutely no claim. Her only right if she was bothered was to get up and move. The only legal claim that may exist now is a wrongful termination suit by the guys that got fired.

citizenkeys··on Ask PG: How do you effectively deal with incredibly smart people?
Yeah, EI is a major factor. I read Daniel Goleman's book some years ago. It was definitely a worthwhile read: http://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Intelligence-Matter-More-Tha...
citizenkeys··on Apache SSL On Multiple Name-Based VHosts Using Server Name Indication (SNI)
Originally, SSL required using a separate i.p. address for every host that wanted to use SSL. The reason was because the security certificate wasn't sent until after the secure connection was made. That precluded choosing the certificate on hostname. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/517336/apache-name-virtua...

Apache HTTPD supports SNI since version 2.2.12.

citizenkeys··on Ask HN: Half of YC company websites are SSL-only. Time for SSL-only internet?
Apache httpd supports Server Name Indication (SNI) since Apache 2.2.12: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/517336/apache-name-virtua...

Configuration can be found at: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/NameBasedSSLVHostsWithSNI

citizenkeys··on Ask HN: Half of YC company websites are SSL-only. Time for SSL-only internet?
Got any specific details of how this makes hosting more expensive and difficult to scale? If the browser and all web servers have the same certificate, I don't see much of a challenge in going SSL-only.

Also, I did some research after posting. Google Chrome now has an HTTPS-only mode: http://www.cgisecurity.com/2009/01/httpsonly-mode-added-to-c...

And the EFF has released extensions for Firefox and Chrome that apply HTTPS to all websites: https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

citizenkeys··on Waiting for the Accelerator Bubble to Pop
Bloomberg TV (which also owns Business Week) covered this a month ago in an interview with Paul Graham: http://ycuniverse.com/pg-on-bloomberg-tv

As was said at the time, the portfolio effect requires investing in many startups to diversify risk. Most startups are high-risk investments that will obviously fail. And only extremely qualified investors should invest in startups.

One major issues with all these accelerators is the mentors are increasingly less qualified and experienced to give advice. The other major issue is the startups themselves are not focusing on actually making anything people want, but rather focusing on raising money. Paul Graham said as much at Demo Day for YCS12, where the startups were prohibited from speaking about fundraising efforts: http://ycuniverse.com/ycw13-likely-less-than-50-companies

citizenkeys··on How far along does your idea have to be before applying to YC?
PG's most consistent advice is the founders are important, not the idea. In theory, the right set of founders could apply with no product and no idea and still get into YC.

Likewise, PG recently said that applying every six months with a different idea makes your likelihood of getting into YC better versus consistently applying with the same idea ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5194256 ).

Send me an email if the site gets traction. I will write a blog post about it.
citizenkeys··on Ask HN: Any black women founders out there? What's your story?
I've had this discussion before: One reason you don't frequently hear about founders that are women and minorities is that journalists don't go out of their way to point out the physical characteristics of people. To do so would itself be potentially prejudicial.

To use your example, if a company is run by a black woman, no responsible reporter is going to put in their article "Oh, and by the way, this company is run by a black woman." Just think of how negative that sounds.

citizenkeys··on Ask HN: Any black women founders out there? What's your story?
There's a whole accelerator of startups for under-represented demographics, including women and minorities: http://www.newmeaccelerator.com/

citizenkeys··on New Silicon Valley TV Show By Mike Judge Films in Palo Alto (Pictures)
Did anybody else get to check out the filming? They closed a few blocks of El Camino Real for awhile earlier in the day, but I was too busy to go over there and get photos.

If anybody else has any photos of the filming, post a link and I will update my blog with a link to your site.

citizenkeys··on Mike Judge's Silicon Valley show in production
Yeah... However, Mike Judge gave us the cult classic "Office Space". Also Beavis & Butt-Head.
citizenkeys··on Clerky (YC S11) Helps Startups Save Time And Money On Legal Incorporation
How does Clerky handle having a registered agent in Delaware? Neither the article nor Clerky website have any info about that. Incorporating in any state requires a registered agent that is physically located in the state.
citizenkeys··on Y Combinator's Vast And Ever-Expanding Universe
Did I leave anything out? If so, please tell me.
citizenkeys··on Can you fit your Life into a Backpack?
If you get rid of all your furniture, there's really not much left. I've done the same routine as the author, and with the same two devices (MacBook Air and iPhone). If you're single, there's no reason to be confined to one place anymore. Mobile, wifi, and battery technology eliminate any need to be tethered to one location. And laptops and smartphones are so powerful now you can easily satisfy all your personal entertainment from them (music, movies, games, web browsing, etc).

Final thought: I solved the issue of having a big screen television using a projector and pair of speakers. Connect them to your laptop and just project onto a wall.

citizenkeys··on Ask HN: Can you get a "good" job in the industry without a degree?

citizenkeys··on Y Combinator Moves Across The Street
I noticed the article was written in September. Is the move still happening? If so, when?
citizenkeys··on What's The Secret Behind Y Combinator's Success?
"YC has invested $8 million... more than 400 companies in over 30 markets."

Where have I seen that exact phrase before?

citizenkeys··on Ask HN: Startups on EC2, what does your setup look like?
Storing static files on a micro ec2 instance saves me money versus storing the images using s3. s3 charges by the GET requests and PUT requests. So if you're storing a lot of static files, like images, then you'll go through that free tier very quickly and start racking up the charges. But if you store those images on your ec2 instance and serve them with apache/http/whatever, then you don't pay for any of the requests, just the bandwidth. and if you have low traffic and optimize your images, its easy to stay within that free tier and pay absolutely nothing.
citizenkeys··on Ask Old-School HN: What was it like pre internet?
I was there. And it wasn't that long ago. Before the Internet, and before wifi and broadband, we had dial-up bulletin board services that used a modem. They were text-based and when you started a download, you had to wait for it to finish before you could do anything else. Some bulletin boards were connected by dedicated phone lines between them, so you could access multiple BBS's without having to hang up and dial multiple phone numbers. Also, the good BBS's were frequently busy. So you had to leave your modem program to keep re-dialing until you could finally get through.
citizenkeys··on AV SQUID: Enjoy YouTube Simply Like Using iTunes
The benefits are nothing to download, no searching, and less typing. I will be the first to admit the design really sucks. But the core functionality needs to be complete before we start decorating. The design and user interface are the next big challenges I'm about to focus on.
citizenkeys··on AV SQUID: Enjoy YouTube Simply Like Using iTunes
This is my start-up I've been working on for about a year and a half. Feel free to leave feedback/suggestions in the comments. Yes, after about a year and a half, it sure would be nice to get a friggin' angel round.
citizenkeys··on Ask PG: Why not take YC public like Berkshire Hathaway?
pg's response doesn't exactly answer the question. crowdfunding start-ups would involve all investors dealing with all the start-ups. by investing in YC, YC would manage the portfolio of companies on behalf of shareholders.

the reason for YC to take investors would be to inject new capital that could be invested in more start-ups. imagine semi-annual YC batches of 1000 or more new companies. or seed rounds of 1 million or more per start-up, which is actually becoming increasingly common already.
