Exceptions are made all the time to this rule. So it’s never clear when something will be allowed or not.
citizen_friend··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Authoritarianism is when the appointed judges vote 6-4 for an interpretation which at worst is an extension of existing principle.

If that’s your level of argumentative empathy I can see why you’re mad.

And yet he left office on the appointed day and lost an election.

> democracies fail

Is this the democracy where we need to stop voters from voting or give them incomplete information to avoid making bad choices?

If you’re hoping trump is jailed before election, I agree that is unlikely to happen.

Is she forgetting that impeachment exists?

Why is sottomayor the only justice drawing this conclusion?

Impeach.
citizen_friend··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Well you can always impeach a president.

Now do 1000. That’s kind of the whole point. Quadratic works fine until it sneaks up on you.

It’s not a human, and we shouldn’t assume it will have traits we do without evidence.

Iteration also is when your brain meets the external world and corrects. This is a closed system.

Security people on high alert for every possible scenario with no sense of relative risk or attack surface wonder why their concerns aren’t taken seriously.
citizen_friend··on Neofetch developer archives all his repositories: "Have taken up farming"
Running an industrial farm that makes money efficiently is different than living on a plot of land with chickens and cows, giving you a cheap lifestyle.
citizen_friend··on Why "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" matters (2011)
Similar themes. SICP is a little more academic. You build a compiler, do more math, etc.

PAIP also focuses more on Common Lisp specifics.

citizen_friend··on Do not try to be the smartest in the room; try to be the kindest
Ive also seen cases where business people truly don’t believe there is an underlying reality to a problem. They evaluate approaches and people purely from a sociability stand point.

You make a good point about government, there are so many big problems including bad incentives about working hard, taking risks, etc, it’s hard for to see that as the main one.

People always ignore the simpler explanation: it’s more time and work to make something a second time on a platform you don’t know and control.

Yes.

Alternative theory: the metrics don’t describe our full economic experience.
citizen_friend··on Make your program slower with threads (2014)
The question would be how much data are you sending on how frequently. You're still advertising performance. Even so, go ahead and setup shared memory between your processes. Better to explicitly share part, rather than implicitly share full.
citizen_friend··on Make your program slower with threads (2014)
"manage threading"

What does that mean? Do you mean optimize a piece of code to take advantage of multiple cores? Or do you mean describe multiple independent threads of execution. The latter works best when it has it's own memory address and you assume that "if then else" works as you would expect.

citizen_friend··on Make your program slower with threads (2014)
not supporting multi-threading is not a design flaw, it's a conscious design choice. Multi-threading is hugely overrated as the UNIX kernel already distributes workload across processes and processors. It's a performance hack.
citizen_friend··on Employees who stay in companies longer than two years get paid 50% less (2014)
Note that these are all lifestyle choices which agree with OP. If you really care about money you will be open to moving. If you value the location stability more then you won’t
citizen_friend··on Ask HN: 30y After 'On Lisp', PAIP etc., Is Lisp Still "Beating the Averages"?
Although thats how llvm is serving the C family if you look around you will find a lot of projects and startups where that motivation is not well founded.

Common Lisp also lets you easily compile your language to assembly. To get that additional llvm benefit is at least 2 orders of magnitude of effort, but it’s probably not 2 orders of magnitude faster.

citizen_friend··on Ask HN: 30y After 'On Lisp', PAIP etc., Is Lisp Still "Beating the Averages"?
It’s more true than ever that large projects resemble compilers. The existing llvm Frankensteins and code generators are evidence that people don’t know how easy this kind of thing is in lisp. As a concrete example look at auto diff.

The other advantages are less true because dynamic languages are prolific and powerful. But also you never really grok JavaScript or Python until you study Lisp. It’s common to see what’s essentially C or Java written in python syntax.

And let’s be fair nobody in the 90s understood C++ including pg.

Nobody is saying this.

We are saying this is probably not true, and you just want to play with toys rather than ship working systems.
