Of course :). 1729 is the smallest number that can be written as the sum of two cubes in two different ways:

10^3 + 9^3 = 12^3 + 1^3

cirwin··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2016)
Unfortunately not yet, though maybe next year. But we do offer a $1729 referral award if you refer a fullstack or iOS engineer that we end up hiring.

cirwin··on Please grow your buffers exponentially
Doubling is actually pretty memory efficient in real world scenarios. i.e. in libxml, using 2n buffers wasted less memory than an additional 10 bytes on the end of each.

https://mail.gnome.org/archives/xml/2012-May/msg00009.html

cirwin··on JS stacktraces. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Thanks for your input :). I'll definitely do some more rigorous testing — so far I've just run a few test suites and gone "looks about the same".
cirwin··on JS stacktraces. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Do you have details on which engines will have this issue?

In the actual Bugsnag notifier we avoid adding try/catch in Chrome/Opera because they don't need it (it also breaks "stop on unhandled exception" in the console).

cirwin··on Web standards killed the HTML star
What's particularly interesting is that even though "Web standards" are just another skill every developer/designer needs; they still require significant time to learn.

I can see this going somewhere like law, where you're expected to work as a paralegal for a few years doing all the boring stuff, before you're allowed up to the echelons of people actually get things done.

cirwin··on Node's Unicode Dragon
In the example I looked at to debug this, the sequence of events was:

1. One of our customer's javascript apps sent a truncated string to their web-server in a JSON payload. This string ended with a leading surrogate (this is another instance of V8 bug discussed in the blog post).

2. Their ruby backend exploded when they tried to use a regular expression on the string (because ruby's regexp library is strict about valid utf-8).

3. The bugsnag exception notifier copied the bytes from the incoming parameter into the JSON exception notification payload (ruby didn't notice because its string library unconditionally believes you if you tell it a string is valid utf8 — another bug :p).

cirwin··on Node's Unicode Dragon
🐉

To see this dragon, either:

1. Use Safari or Firefox on OS X. 2. Install custom fonts for Linux or Windows. 3. Install https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chromoji-emoji-for... for Chrome

cirwin··on Text-based terminal screencasts
Hey chjj, thank you so much for tty.js! You definitely deserve the credit for doing all the hard work :).
cirwin··on Don't Copy-Paste from Website to Terminal
Good terminal emulators (xterm, urxvt, iTerm2, etc.) have support for "bracketed paste mode" which can be used to fix this problem in zsh: https://github.com/robbyrussell/oh-my-zsh/pull/1698 (original code: http://www.zsh.org/mla/users/2011/msg00367.html)

It's probably easy to write a similar fix for bash.

cirwin··on Rescue.js
As other commenters have mentioned, Source Maps are the solution to this problem in general. The main reason we don't yet allow signup to RescueJS is that "create a source map" is currently beyond the state of the art for web frameworks. You can't "just" do it.

Over the weekend we spent a few hours trying to hook source maps into the asset pipeline for Rails based on https://github.com/sstephenson/sprockets/pull/311 and upgrading the 'uglifier' rubygem to work with UglifyJS2. We didn't manage to get it quite working within the time limit, but we'll try and push our work-in-progress upstream to get this ball moving again.

cirwin··on Rescue.js
We will add support for window.onerror eventually, but there are two reasons we haven't yet done this:

1. window.onerror gives you no backtrace 2. hooking into jQuery.event.add lets us tell you "this error happened when the user clicked that button".

We've not yet implemented the UI for 2. (48 hours is not so long as we thought!); but I remain convinced that suitable integration with various frameworks is a much better developer experience than trying to rely on just the error message. Being able to see both the source code where the exception happened (see http://rescuejs.com/assets/screen_341.png) and the user context in which it happens makes it considerably easier to fix the problem.

cirwin··on Show HN: pry-rescue — workflow-optimized debugging for ruby
It is :). The "up" and "down" command won't work, and there are a few bugs with NoMethodError's, but the core functionality is very much there.
cirwin··on Show HN: pry-rescue — workflow-optimized debugging for ruby
Yes :). I'm not exactly sure of the details, but I certainly want to try! See https://github.com/mrbrdo/rack-webconsole: there's already a rack-webconsole-pry, so it should be an easy step to hook it up to past exceptions.
cirwin··on Show HN: pry-rescue — workflow-optimized debugging for ruby
pry-rescue is a modernization thereof (banisterfiend helped me build it).

The only technical difference is that pry-rescue can catch exceptions raised at the C level (like NoMethodError, or ZeroDivisionError); but pry-rescue also has a much easier-to-learn API/UI. (Particularly, by only supporting catching unhandled exceptions, pry-rescue can avoid the need to predicate on which exceptions should be handled).

cirwin··on Show HN: pry-rescue — workflow-optimized debugging for ruby
In rails you can just do:

    class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base
      around_filter :pry_rescue if Rails.env == 'development'

      def pry_rescue
        Pry::rescue{ yield }
      end
I'm hoping to get a Rack middleware out at some point; which will make this even easier.
cirwin··on MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on
It's very similar you're correct, particularly when you add in the Manager/Service layer (something that I hadn't spent enough time investigating).

The main advantage of Operations over controllers is that they're fully composable. You can take the operation that logs a user in (which displays the login screen, and awaits the user typing a username and password) and use it as a sub-part of any other operation.

In a purer MVC world you get something similar to this by making a function that instantiates the login controller with its associated view; that's pretty good, but there's no obvious place to put that function.

I'll certainly be following up with more details, and some actual code.

cirwin··on MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on
The advantage of operations over controllers is the composability.

Whereas controllers have a pretty undefined lifetime, operations are finished when they're done. This means that operations can use each other to get work done, a pattern you don't see with controllers.
