circularfoyers··on Microsoft Edge Used More Than Firefox
I feel as if this situation is akin to Linux and Windows desktop usage. The fact that Linux has a tiny market share on the desktop isn't a reason to not use it, particularly for privacy. You can't match the level of fingerprinting protection brought in by efforts of the Tor uplift project, a significant one being letterboxing among many others. All of which and more can be force enabled in the user.js, that there is no equilivant in Chromium.

If Brave can reach this point it would be great, but then they are still at the whim of Google, who has shown little to no interest with privacy in Chromium. To overcome this they would start needing a team as knowledable as Chromium's and Firefox's to maintain a codebase that has diverged so much from Chromium because of their desire to uphold privacy in the face of fundamental changes Google impose.

At this point I think they'll almost have come full circle with where Mozilla is at, where they are struggling to make enough money from it's users to stay afloat. I think this is why it's so important to support Firefox, in the same way for Linux desktop. There's no telling how long it will take for Brave to reach this point (if they ever do), whereas Firefox is already there now.

Seems as if they've taken inspiration from Firefox's recent redesign.

Do you use Linux as your main OS on your desktop or laptop. If so, how much do you use the terminal and what for?

By loud I assume you mean the top comments, which says to me this is popular with the many not the few of the HN crowd.
circularfoyers··on Creating a serverless function to scrape web pages metadata
I think it makes sense when it's simply describing that you don't manage the server.

I don't see how being even a little racist is good in any way. I honestly feel like a lot of people don't realise what being subjected to racism is like in our present day.
circularfoyers··on Why is the Gaza Strip blurry on Google Maps?
Not really. The reason seems pretty straight forward to me, "The vast majority of Antarctica is also in low resolution due to the bright, often featureless, ice and snow making high-resolution imaging both difficult and largely unnecessary".
circularfoyers··on Firefox Public Data Report
Setting "app.update.auto" to false in about:config would have prevented Firefox from updating to the new release.
circularfoyers··on Firefox Public Data Report
Are you not using the Firefox package from your distro's repo? If you were, it doesn't check for updates and I've never in all my years had it load into a new profile after an update. It sounds like you were using the official binary not from your package manager, which in most cases you really shouldn't do that.
circularfoyers··on Send: A Fork of Mozilla's Firefox Send
The other option too would be just to clone the repo locally and use grep, find, etc. That seems the simpler option if you just want to perform a search.

Addressing your first point, web push notifications works persistently on Firefox and Chromium on Android.

And I'm not sure what you're referring to by "control", but Firefox on Android allows you to install addons and use about:config (Chromium can't do the former and doesn't have an equivalent for the latter, even on desktop).

AOSP is open source but all of Google's apps and Google Play Services is proprietary.
circularfoyers··on Show HN: I wrote an HN bot to suggest HTTPS url when people post HTTP URLs
You may have your own reasons for not preferring https, but having it default is important for security for others, even when the page doesn't contain sensitive material (a point which is debatable as well). https://doesmysiteneedhttps.com is a good short summary of reasons.
circularfoyers··on Windows 95 – How Does It Look Today?
I think it's worth mentioning the reason for this is mostly because of the fast boot feature, which means Windows is actually just leaving hibernation opposed to cold booting.
circularfoyers··on Gnome 40
I think concluding that "everyone" hates GNOME is hyperbole when people who like GNOME are less likely to post about it than someone who has a problem with it and that regular users who make up the majority are not ones who frequent these types of forums or are ones commenting on the issue tracker about this.

I think the only way to properly understand the topic would be to do surveys across different demographics, which I believe GNOME has done. It might feel like GNOME are ignoring "everyone" when everyone is the subset of it's users (or not of it's users) who frequent the same forums you do.

That seems to be only for TPM, which isn't usually what people refer to when talking about Intel ME.

Has there actually been any research into the disabling of AMD PSP like there has been surrounding me_cleaner?

All I remember regarding AMD PSP was that one motherboard manufacturer showed the option after an update and the other you had to flash a modified BIOS to expose it.

But besides this discovery by a user, there hadn't been any research or verification that this software option does what it claims.

circularfoyers··on Calligra- FOSS Office Suite by KDE Team
This is something that always really stood out for me yet I hadn't seen any discussion about it. Is this something that most Linux users not notice? It was a reason I'd preferred GNOME over KDE and had always hoped it would improve at some point.
circularfoyers··on Alternative Shells
This is why I ended up sticking with zsh after I tried fish for a period. I liked some of fish's features, so I used the two plugins fast-syntax-highlighting and zsh-autosuggestions to get the same features in zsh.
circularfoyers··on Supercookie: Browser Fingerprinting via Favicon
Thanks for posting this. I wouldn't have known otherwise of the attempt from the authors of the paper which this demo is based to introduce this vulnerability into Firefox[1]. Really leaves a sour taste in mouth from how irresponsible and unethical this was.
