cies··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
absorb or create?

i understand it as: absorbing is in the intestine, generating D happens in the skin when exposed to the sun

cies··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
And you got Bitwig :)
cies··on Fedora Asahi Remix is now working on Apple M3
they are the global. you can also see them from Settings (the UI to it)

There's a folder where KDE stores your user's settings. Shortcuts are in their own file...

For me it's `/home/$USER_NAME/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc`

cies··on Porting 100k lines from TypeScript to Rust using Claude Code in a month
This is what LLMs are good at, generate what "look[s] insanely promising" to us humans
cies··on Porting 100k lines from TypeScript to Rust using Claude Code in a month
I kind of expect that code to be full of non-idiomatic Rust code that mimics a GC'ed language...

Once that's also "fixed", it may well be a lot faster than the current Rust version.

cies··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
Yes. First that, now Greenland. But brrrr, Putin/Gadaffi/Sadam/Khomeni/Kim bad... (they never attacked Europe like this)
cies··on I'm 34. Here's 34 things I wish I knew at 21
Can any animal be immoral to our standards?

Rape culture among ducks?

Or crows that attack a member of the flock that misbehaved to a minor of the flock? (this is one of the animals that seem to have their own morals).

Anyway: humans should not project our sense of moral to animals.

And humans are no carnivores. Most likely we're omnivores (like our close animal relatives the primates: and they prefer fruit over meat any day, just like human babies).

cies··on Unconventional PostgreSQL Optimizations
I love what LLMs are doing for me in PG's SQL. I discovered many features by having LLMs write them for me, often spot-on 100% on first prompt.

Since I know conceptually how RDBMSes work, I can ask vey specifically what I want. Also asking for feedback on schemas/queries really helped me. I use a lot more of PGs features now!

You don't.

As a vegan I want to deter people from working in slaughter houses etc. I feel it's urgent. But they make their living.

As an intactivist I want people to stop genital mutilation of minors: both male and female. I feel it's urgent. But those baby cutting doctors and "priests" make their living.

That's why it is so easy to make a war when people are hungry. You need little money to convince them to turn to the dark side.

cies··on Ask HN: COBOL devs, how are AI coding affecting your work?
SQL. I learned a lot using it. It's really good and uses teh full potential of Postgres. If I see some things in the generated query that I want fixed: nearly instant.

Also: it gives great feedback on my schema designs.

So far SQL it's best. (comparing to JS/ HTML+Tailwind / Kotlin)

cies··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
He should be allowed to say that.

But it should not be enforced, or the constitution became toilet paper. I think we are arriving at the latter.

cies··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
The govt contract with them should be voided. That's the way.

But in the US no one believes they can meaningfully influence govt for real issues. And they are right.

Sure you can get them to paint a rainbow zebra crossing. /s

But not stop/prevent a (civil) war. Democracy dies and lobbyism (what we call corruption in "modern western democracies" -- because we dont do corruption, that's for poor countries!) takes over when the power is consolidated at a high enough level.

> And ppl were worried about China's 1984 style use of Ai, lol.

Came here to say the same...

> In the end it was greedy software developers that enable this.

Nope. First is a failing govt system (not upholding the constitution) that's enabling this.

Second it's not the devs but the business men (that are so much in bed in govt that they have become indistinguishable).

Look, there are software devs (and probably business men) that are equally greedy in, say, Finland/Iceland/etc. But it's not happening there: they simply have a govt that's better for the people at large.

cies··on I’m leaving Redis for SolidQueue
I use PGQM and PG_CRON now... Not looking back.

The MySQL + Redis + AWS' elasti-cron (or whatever) was a ghetto compared to Postgres.

cies··on Eat Real Food
B12 is not produced by animals, but supplemented to them as well if they do not live outside.

B12 is produced by bacteria in dark soil.

Dairy is unhealthy because it contains a lot of hormones that are unhealthy to take, except from your own species and during weaning stage of growing up.

An other reason it is unhealthy is the amount of puss allowed in by the industry. Those animals are sick and have huge udders, too big -> often infected.

cies··on Eat Real Food
Unhealthy for adults. Good point :)
cies··on Eat Real Food
Milk is very unhealthy, in any quantity.

Meat is as well. Maybe organic in small quantities, not too often can help.

Fish is problematic as much is contaminated with mercury and other heavy metals (we poisoned the ocean).

cies··on Lights and Shadows (2020)
I love these interactive "text books". Usually I find out about them here on HN.

Is there a collection of these somewhere?

cies··on Htmx: High Power Tools for HTML
I needed Alpine mostly for small bits of interactivity in the page of an otherwise SSR app. Basically what I used jQuery for 20 years ago.
cies··on Htmx: High Power Tools for HTML
HTMX would work well with jQuery. But Alpine seems to be more popular in the HTMX crowd. I'd say Alpine is a good replacement for jQuery in my conceptual model.

HTMX just means: just send incomplete HTML documents over the wire. (some that is done for a long time, but was always frowned upon by the API-first and SPA movements -- and for good reasons (ugly APIs and architecturally less-compatible with SPAs).

cies··on Htmx: High Power Tools for HTML
I use it in one place, where it makes sense: i want the server to template something that works interactively/asyncly. The rest of my current app is, thank God, oldskool SSR HTML request-response over an SQL db.
cies··on Htmx: High Power Tools for HTML
> instead of using one JavaScript library

One never uses just one JS lib :) The JS ecosystem always comes with lost of tools, and libs, and bells, and whistles.

I like Elm for this reason. Less choices. Zero runtime errors (I know it is possible in contrived examples, but I've seen and many teams have said the promise holds true after many years of using in production).

cies··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
So big international corruption schemes are the real reason.

Drugs are merely a cover story: sand in the eyes of the public.

cies··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Drugs are not the issue here. It's the bullshit reason, because the real reason is so ugly it cannot be see the light of day.
cies··on I ported JustHTML from Python to JavaScript with Codex CLI and GPT-5.2 in hours
This is an interesting case. It may be good to feed it to other model and see how they do.

Also: it may be interesting to port it to other languages too and see how they do.

JS and Py are but runtime-typed and very well "spoken" by LLMs. Other languages may require a lot more "work" (data types, etc.) to get the port done.

cies··on Mozilla appoints new CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo
Oopsie. Yeah that was GNOME. My bad.
cies··on SQLite JSON at full index speed using generated columns
You do need some fancy in-house way to migrate old JSONs to new JSON in case you want to evolve the (implicit) JSON schema.

I find this one of the hardest part of using JSON, and the main reason why I rather put it in proper columns. Once I go JSON I needs a fair bit of code to deal with migrartions (either doing them during migrations; or some way to do them at read/write time).

cies··on SQLite JSON at full index speed using generated columns
..and it does not make "certain queries easier" (quote from the article).
cies··on Bad Dye Job
I also think Apple knew they rather wanted to move on without him. They probably gave him some targets that were to high and then reduced/dropped his bonuses based on low achievements.

He got the message, Meta got the carrot.

He might even be a better fit for Meta.
