ciarannolan··on Twitter hack has profound national security implications
You're right that Nick Cannon is the exception. (edit: actually, you're wrong: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/jul/16/nick-cannon...)

How about Ice Cube, Stephen Jackson, DeSean Jackson, Dwyane Wade, etc. and all those who supported the comments or brushed them off as "speaking their truth" or some other nonsense? They will face no consequences, because, again, racism is deemed okay in the current climate as long as it's aimed correctly.

Can you even _imagine_ the absolute chaos that would rein if a white NBA player started quoting David Duke to millions of followers, and a bunch of white NBA players and commentators supported them?

ciarannolan··on Twitter hack has profound national security implications
No explanation necessary. It's the same old racism, but with a new 2020 twist: it's ok as long as it's racism against people we don't like.

Check out the recent spate of black athletes and celebrities posting openly anti-Semitic comments on social media (one directly (mis)quoting Hitler re: Jews) with zero repercussions.

ciarannolan··on Facebook readies global launch of its TikTok competitor
Sure, but in the case of TikTok, there's one less intermediary in the chain trying to hack your voting decisions.
ciarannolan··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
I definitely don't think Obama/Biden/others would DM.

But Elon? Some of these bitcoin exchanges? Maybe. How about accounts that were accessed (if any) that never blasted out the bitcoin tweet, but had their messages harvested?

ciarannolan··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
Isn't it kind of insane to lock your account into using a single U2F/FIDO key? Lost the physical key, lose the account?
ciarannolan··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
If the details about how these accounts were taken over are true, that an employee changed email addresses of these accounts to email accounts controlled by the attackers, this is going to turn out to be a massive breach.

I'm thinking specifically of direct messages that could have been scooped up before they went public and started tweeting on these accounts.

ciarannolan··on Hundreds of hyperpartisan sites are masquerading as local news
>I literally quoted the relevant part there, what kind of question is this? Must this site really turn into Twitter? Did you really need a "Ha! Gotcha! Screencapped and Retweeted!!!!!" moment?

I would like to see less of whatever this is on this site.

ciarannolan··on Hundreds of hyperpartisan sites are masquerading as local news
I disagree that "Hundreds of hyper-conservative sites masquerading as local news" as a title would imply that this phenomena is only a conservative one. I think you're adding the "only" part on your own, in your own reading of it.

Not really sure what the last part of your comment even means.

ciarannolan··on Hundreds of hyperpartisan sites are masquerading as local news
That's a good point, though I think it's unlikely that 5% of the sites and 95% of the sites both make up ~50% of impressions each.

But to your point, we don't know unless we know, and my assumption could be totally wrong.

ciarannolan··on Hundreds of hyperpartisan sites are masquerading as local news
Well, yes, that's a huge part of this story.

I don't see anyone in this thread (or the article) claiming that they're "only conservative", do you?

FTA:

>As the map indicates, there are considerably more conservative-leaning sites than liberal-leaning sites. Only 24 of the 445 sites we’ve identified so far are liberal-leaning.

It's 95% conservative sites. Do you dispute that? I think GP was dead-on in their assessment, skimming or not.

ciarannolan··on Hundreds of hyperpartisan sites are masquerading as local news
Sure, but you didn't answer GP's question.

95% of these sites are conservative-leaning. That's the story here, and as GP says, implying that this is a problem across a wide ideological spectrum is wrong.

ciarannolan··on PG: The biggest source of stress for me at YC was running HN
I hope not. I like HN just the way it is. It's a simple text message board with good moderation.

We don't need to pile on more features for the sake of it. There are plenty of communities for DIY projects and AMAs.

ciarannolan··on One woman's stolen identity exposed a system of exam fraud

ciarannolan··on Police surveilled protests with help from Twitter-affiliated startup Dataminr
Maybe because HN is full of people that work for similar privacy-destroying tech companies. I find that people on this board get a bit touchy when you talk about FAANG companies doing immoral things. (I know this isn't a FAANG company but its affect is in the same vein).
ciarannolan··on Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting
Apparently it's a pretty complicated, holistic system of pulling just the main text.

ciarannolan··on MoreOnionsPorfavor: Onionize your website and take back the internet
"Web" definitely meant something to people as a metaphore, for long before the internet (ex. "web of lies").

"The 'internet' is like a spider's web, but each point in the web is a different computer."

vs

"Tor is like an onion, where each layer of the onion represents a computer acting like a relay, in a giant network of computers, which your traffic is routed through....."

ciarannolan··on Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting
Good point. I think some sites have already figured this out. I'll find one every now and then that clearly has a giant chunk of text in the center, but the reader view option doesn't activate.

Wonder if there's a flag that disables it or something.

ciarannolan··on Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting
I browse with js off by default using the setting in uBlock Origin. It works great.

When you encounter a site (usually news sites) where the article looks wonky, just use Firefox's "reader view" which pulls out the text and puts it into a nicely formatted, clean tab.

ciarannolan··on A Letter on Justice and Open Debate
That's your interpretation of a hashtag. And with that you go around beating people over the head with it, demanding they add all the right emojis to their Twitter bio or be called a racist. Ie. exactly the destructive behavior TFA is about.

The idea that BLM stands for just a single thing ("black people are people too") is absurd. It's very open to interpretation and people want a wide variety of things in supporting it.

You aren't helping any person by arguing in bad faith (ex. your other comment in this tree: "Do you think that black people's lives don't matter?"). In fact, you're turning away people who would otherwise be allies, and believe in the common cause of humanity, but will never go along with all the woke song and dance bullshit.

ciarannolan··on A Letter on Justice and Open Debate
It's pretty clear what your view on cancel culture is, namely that it's not really a thing.

Got any data to back that up?

ciarannolan··on A Letter on Justice and Open Debate
> [...] the hashtag is the literal "black lives matter."

No, it's not, that's exactly the point. Otherwise #WhiteLivesMatter is completely valid too. After all, literally "white lives matter" is true, right?

This is exactly the bad faith argumentation that the GP and TFA are about. "You either support our hashtag or you do not think black people are people too."

ciarannolan··on A Letter on Justice and Open Debate
What kind of data are you looking for? Number of people fired for a tweet? Number of colleagues shunned for not being woke enough?

> On Wednesday night, the topic of conversation was Lorenz herself, who had been listening earlier in the conversation but left partway through. After she left, the participants began discussing whether Lorenz was playing "the woman card" when speaking out about her harassment following a Twitter altercation with Srinivasan.

> "You can't fucking hit somebody, attack them and just say, 'Hey, I have ovaries and therefore, you can't fight back,'" Felicia Horowitz, founder of the Horowitz Family Foundation and wife of Andreessen Horowitz cofounder Ben Horowitz, said.

> "Is Taylor afraid of a brown man on the street? Then she shouldn't be afraid of a brown man in Clubhouse," Srinivasan said. "I have literally done nothing other than one previous tweet. Number one, right? So the whole, you know, talking about tweeting as you know, harassment—completely illegitimate, completely wrong, completely fabricated and just false."

> "When it comes to our industry, there’s a really, really toxic dynamic that exists right now," Nait Jones, an Andreessen Horowitz VC, said on the call while speaking about recent reports about abuse in the tech industry. "Because those stories were so popular and drove so much traffic, they also created a market for more of those stories. They created a pressure on many reporters to find the next one of those stories inside of a fast growing tech company because those stories play very well on Twitter, especially around protecting vulnerable people."

On mobile: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mozilla.fe... + enable the extention "uBlock Origin" in the settings (not sure the exact steps while writing this, sorry)

On desktop: regular Firefox + https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin...

In uBlock Origin, there is a setting that disables Javascript by default (which I use). You can then enable it temporarily or permanently on a per-site basis.
