chucky123··on We became experts on Google Play Store policy violations
This is basically what Google does on the chrome webstore too.

Things got so frustrating that I wrote my own guide on pushing updates to the webstore: https://getsnapfont.com/posts/avoiding-lengthy-review-times-...

At this point, I can sufficiently say that the author is on point regarding AI training and I know when an extension review has been through an automated process or via a human.

chucky123··on Linear.app
I don't know much about linear but I'll describe their landing page as pure design porn.
chucky123··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
Agree, I've also seen this is a rising sentiment on Twitter these days.

These tools are technologically great, but they are not 10x better than notepad.exe

The marketing and hype around these tools are self perpetuating. Some twitter guru will post about these tools and get kickback or an increase in followers. People who pay for tools post about their experience online so they can signal to other people who have paid for this tool that yes, they now belong to the cool kids club too.

And there are content creators who's income depends on these tools. They will 'review' these tools, post a review online and unknown to most people, they will be getting some money for this review under the table.

I've also seen that this is all mostly limited to tech folks who consume too much of their info from Twitter and Youtube. None of my offline friends know about Obsidian, Roam, or the zillion productivity tools that are being produced.

chucky123··on Why doesn't Stripe use Stripe Billing?
This is something many people are interested in. Certainly helps alleviate one of the most potent problems in financial services.
chucky123··on U.S. Army Chooses Google Workspace
Part of why this doesn't happen is because if someone were to hack Google and they got caught, Google will simply disable all their services for that person.
chucky123··on Dating Other Task Managers
Is it just me or are people massively overthinking note taking.
chucky123··on Critical CSS? Not So Fast
Agree with the author. The gazillion marketing scripts in your webpage is the main performance bottleneck, rather than your css link tag.
chucky123··on Google refuses to reinstate account after man took medical images of son’s groin
Yes, good. Push this to the mainstream. Hopefully something good comes out of this.
chucky123··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
Some really good points in here.
chucky123··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
These are the ones that got the limelight. Multiply this list x100 to get the true number of fuckups.
chucky123··on After 50 years, Michael Heizer is finally ready to unveil City, his life's work
This would fit perfectly as a tony hawk proskater level.
chucky123··on Ask HN: Did Facebook just stop fighting adblockers?
Interesting. Just checked fb and sponsored is inside a single span. Maybe they are ab testing.
chucky123··on Open-source rival for OpenAI’s DALL-E runs on your graphics card
That's a really good idea.
chucky123··on Ask HN: Best way to back up cloud accounts?
This is IMHO a really good question. The real question is - how can you easily migrate your data to another service.

OP, there are some tools that we use to backup gmail accounts. Look up tools like movebot.io, bittitan, etc.

These services also help you move data from Google's cloud.

Also in my experience, its easier to move stuff from your Google workspace account, and its actually harder to move from your private gmail account.

chucky123··on Mullvad is now available on Amazon
One way to put it lol.
chucky123··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
Interesting insight. I though of Mark Z too.
chucky123··on Vercel Build Output API: Infrastructure-as-Filesystem
Lemme put it this way. You know how people pay accountants to do their taxes or get a plumber to repair their sink? They can all be done theoretically by the user but it costs time to fix + time to learn about how to fix.

That's why people pay a premium for vercel(and other similar services like heroku) for hosting.

chucky123··on A weird epic ramble about Etsy homepages from the middle 2000’s
I'm surprised Etsy was established so early. I though it was build in the 2010s.
chucky123··on Build, gather, brawl, repeat: The history of real-time strategy games (2017)
There's nothing literally close to supcom(faf). I reckon faf, and maybe cnc3/ra3 will be the only viable rts games for casual players in the next 5 years.
chucky123··on Venice to introduce entry tickets and fees
Love it!
chucky123··on Goodbye Medium, hello Ghost
You can easily setup Ghost without signing up by using their open source version. Use something like railway.app, digital ocean or other platforms to setup Ghost in literally 5 mins.
chucky123··on Deno raises $21M
Mainly because of Ryan who created nodejs. If you have a good track record, investors will throw money at you anyways.

Not being pessimistic about this though. Imho Deno seems like a solid improvement over nodejs.

chucky123··on Deno raises $21M
Good point.
chucky123··on Tell HN: Instagram demands I send a picture of myself to prove I own my account
This is something that happens with google, twitter, meta properties and mostly all major faang companies. They track heaps of information when you signup.

They will track your ip, device fingerprint, location and everything else. And they will try to figure out if it matches malicious activities like bot usage, scraping behaviour, etc and if yes, they will block your account.

In most cases, they don't even block your account but will play dumb. You will get page loading errors, insta app will say that your content couldn't be loaded, twitter will say that this browser isn't supported, etc.

chucky123··on Lexical – a web text editor framework that powers Facebook
Fundamental problem with Tiptap is its horrendous docs. If lexical can put out better docs, it is better than Tiptap automatically.
chucky123··on [dead]
Very much seems like it.
chucky123··on I got hacked and Facebook banned me
This sucks to hear. Having dealt with Meta properies, they won't be interested in helping you.

I had something similar happen to my Instagram account.

A few weeks ago, I got a popup inside IG to verify my age. Not wanting to give them my real age, I set my age as 0. The popup playfully said that my age can't be 0. So I set it to 20 years and the popup got stuck. After a few taps, my account was marked as underage account and I had to send my photo id to get it back else it will be deleted permanently after 30 days.

I though about all the photos and messages in my account and while it would be sad to let it go, I reckon IG's ban was a blessing as the quicker I let it go, the free'er I would be from Meta's clutches.

In in the end, I didn't verify my account. By now, it would be wiped out by a cronjob.

---

The sooner you realize these companies(and Meta in particular) don't care about you, the better. These are all rented platforms and should be treated as such.

Don't invest too much in these platforms and if you must, invest in a personal blog hosted on your own domain.

chucky123··on Tell HN: Airbnb now opts in your name and photo to data sharing
Same concern here. I don’t think it was actually deleted from their database. Just flagged as deleted.
chucky123··on Show HN: Parsify Desktop – Extendable calculator for the 21st century
Whats different between parsify and numi calc app?
chucky123··on Ask HN: When is it time to give up on a side project SaaS?
It really depends on your vertical. I suggest reading interviews of people who started businesses in similar verticals and see how much time they took to achieve profitability
