chubs··on Rhai: An embedded scripting language for Rust
Very impressive. I read the readme and I’m unsure how memory management works, is it GC? And is it OOP or not? Thanks :)
chubs··on The entire healthcare system is broken, not just health insurance companies
I hear impressive things about Singapore’s health system. Maybe USA could trial that system in one state for a while?
chubs··on They don't make them like that any more: the Yamaha DX7 keyboard
I recently was obsessed with FM for a while! If you want a bit of fun, here’s a synth I made, the codes fairly simple if you want to poke around, you can fool with parameters easily. Doesn’t work great on mobile though. https://chrishulbert.github.io/you-synth/
chubs··on Get me out of data hell
Why are we so crummy? Is it because our talent finds it generally easy to migrate to the states for better opportunities, because of no language barrier and the ‘coalition of the willing’ visa (iirc)?
chubs··on Get me out of data hell
Many of us have kids to feed! The economy is not bursting with jobs anymore since rates rose post-COVID.
chubs··on Get me out of data hell
Do you think perhaps the problem is rooted in people being dishonest, and honest people are driven mad by it all and self-select out? The dead-sea effect?
chubs··on Linux on Apple Silicon with Alyssa Rosenzweig [audio]
What would be possible if everyone interested in Linux-on-macOS chipped in $5 each month? I wonder if this could fund a big enough team to make this super-polished.
chubs··on Show HN: Rust Web Framework
Congrats! I have a question: I used to have a job as a Rails developer, and one thing i struggled with was knowing which options/hash keys were possible to pass into various functions, due to the lack of typing. Would it be the case that your framework, based in a type-safe language, would give precise autocompletion of all such options? Or does advanced usage of Rust macros remove some of this ability? Thanks!
chubs··on WordPress retaliation impacts community
I’m trying to get a better picture of this. Can someone tell me what percentage of code contributions are paid for by Matt/automattic? If it’s like 99% then I’m a little more sympathetic, I’m reminded of the centos/redhat thing. Either way, peace :)
chubs··on Twenty Years of FM Synthesis Inside Ableton Live
Oh I love FM synths! I'm working on a customisable one in my spare time lately for the kids' school, as the music teacher was complaining that the students have been using all the same samples over and over. Feel free to have a peek! Desktop only. Source code is hopefully nice and clean too: https://chrishulbert.github.io/you-synth
chubs··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
Can Apple simply exit Ireland effective immediately and claim they paid their taxes, and do not wish to be around for this new rule?
chubs··on Imgpls – An extension to load Imgur images directly
Does this mean it’s possible to make a safari extension to automatically take you to old.reddit.com whenever you hit a reddit link?
chubs··on The Vala Language (2017)
My recollection of the reason back then was that running on a VM would make the transition to 64 bits smooth, which at the time was worrying everyone a lot.
chubs··on National Park Service Will Cite AWD Drivers for Driving on 4WD-Only Trails
Ok I’m interested… how is this doable?
chubs··on National Park Service Will Cite AWD Drivers for Driving on 4WD-Only Trails
I have a new Tiguan. It’s supposed to be AWD. In reality though, even when in off-road mode, it’s basically front-wheel-drive as evidenced by the fronts spinning when you accelerate hard into a gap in traffic. Most cars that use a Haldex oem for their awd act similarly.
chubs··on One-man SaaS, 9 Years In
I’m a little reticent to post my physical home address to be honest, are EU micropreneurs really ok with that?
chubs··on One-man SaaS, 9 Years In
I've tried creating a few one-man SaaS's in the past and have always struggled to get customers to visit (let alone try it out and pay), any tips from people here who have had success? Thanks :)
chubs··on Crooks Bypassed Google's Email Verification to Create Workspace Accounts, Acces
Ah fair enough :)
chubs··on Crooks Bypassed Google's Email Verification to Create Workspace Accounts, Acces
I heard that they found a Gab account of his where he seemed to be sounding, well, quite Democrat-y? (Maybe do your own research)
chubs··on Deluge of Fake Mac App Store Reviews
I think the Mac App Store is firmly in the ‘A’ stage of the LPA cycle that is so prevalent of big tech nowadays. (Launch, get Promoted, Abandon)
chubs··on Microsoft says 8.5M Windows devices were affected by CrowdStrike outage
I did read somewhere yesterday that macOS does not allow third party software to run at kernel level in the same way, thus couldn’t face the same issue.
chubs··on Panic at the Job Market
Perhaps they're prioritising preventing hyperinflation, and willing to break eggs (layoffs) for that inflation-under-control omelette. Either way, it's all not much fun right now :(
chubs··on Neural Networks from scratch in Rust #4: Layers of neurons and backpropagation

Thanks for your time, I hope it's somewhat informative :)

chubs··on Neural Networks from scratch in Rust #4: Layers of neurons and backpropagation
Hi all, I recently finished writing a series of articles on implementing NNs from scratch, trying to keep it as relatable as possible by demonstrating the maths (math, americans might say) in spreadsheets, pseudocode, and Rust. I really hope someone gets something out of this! Thanks :)
chubs··on People are feeling stuck in their jobs
Wouldn’t the ‘sage theory’ simply be that: this is a recession. Perhaps it’s just been too long since the last one (17ish years?) for people to recall recessions. Last time I got stuck in a very boring job too, for 4 painful years. Probably a good time to study, they say.
chubs··on Spudguns: Potato Cannon Guide
I fooled around with these too, 20+ years ago... this happened a few times to me. I took to wrapping them with a towel + gaffa tape as mitigation. The things you do as a kid!
chubs··on Polyfill supply chain attack hits 100K+ sites
I 100% agree. I feel a huge part of my responsibility as a software "engineer" is to manage complexity. But i feel i'm fighting a losing battle, most everyone seems to pull in the opposite direction.

Complexity increases your surface area for bugs to hide in.

I've come to the conclusion it's tragedy-of-the-commons incentives: People get promotions for complex and clever work, so they do it, at the cost of a more-complex-thus-buggy solution.

And yes, it's not just software, it's everywhere. My modern BMW fell apart, in many many ways, at the 7 year mark, for one data point.

chubs··on Don't DRY Your Code Prematurely
Back in my ruby on rails days, we used to have a saying: Don't 'dry out' your code. I still find that to be a good saying to bring up when you're trying to find a good balance between repetitive code vs painfully generic code.
chubs··on LO – simple WASM native language
This looks super impressive! Any chance you could explain how memory management works? Eg is it like rust in that sense? Or is it GC'ed ? Thanks
chubs··on Show HN: Peanut Butter Spinner
My solution is to have 3 kids. Peanut butter has no chance of spoiling around here, we go through it like it’s going out of fashion! On a more serious note perhaps simply buy a smaller jar if it spoils before you eat it all.
