christophilus··on The weird, wild story of humanity's obsession with gold
You have a point. And yet, today, you can buy even more bread and clothes and materials with an ounce of gold than you could 2000 years ago. Meanwhile, what happened to all of the businesses and currencies over the last few millennia? Where will the FCF of any random company be in 50 years? Will gold still be valuable then?

The staying power of gold is a value in itself.

christophilus··on Railway Is Having a Major Outage
You’d think they wouldn’t have started with GCP. There are plenty of datacenters where you can buy racks and racks of servers, and talk to a human when something goes wrong, and even walk in and access your servers. That’s what I’d be using if I were to build a Rackspace today.
christophilus··on I’ve joined Anthropic
This gave me a good laugh because we don’t know what to think until Jon Blow says, “Here’s the thing.”
christophilus··on Jank now has its own custom IR
> we're using it to optimize jank to compete with the JVM

The JVM gets a lot of hate, but that is a very high bar. The JVM is a serious piece of kit. I hope Jank succeeds. I'd love to use it in real projects.

christophilus··on Prolog Coding Horror
Dunno about Prolog, but Datomic uses datalog for its query language, and it’s excellent. Datalog is a subset of Prolog.
christophilus··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
With CSS names are global. You have to be careful not to accidentally create a class that conflicts with another one used elsewhere in a different context. You have to worry about whether modifying your class will have downstream effects on elements you weren’t intending to impact. It’s a giant pain. I’ve done it by hand for around 20 years before switching to Tailwind.

Can vanilla CSS be used for a complex app? Yes. But, it takes discipline, and I only have a limited amount of that. I’d rather spend my discipline budget on other things.

That said, nested selectors and CSS variables have gone a long way towards making the vanilla experience much more pleasant. I may have to give it a shot on a side project one of these days.

christophilus··on Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged
Well, that escalated quickly. I think I first heard rumors of this a week or two ago. That's a very vast turnaround for such massive code-churn. I don't know how to feel about this.
christophilus··on Starship V3
Plus insane storms and winds that I’m not sure Antarctica will properly simulate.
christophilus··on Postmortem: TanStack NPM supply-chain compromise
This is one reason I have my own dev container script. And the container pulls nothing in except whatever I explicitly put in my .podman folder. It runs without any GitHub access at all. I do all of that from the host machine.
christophilus··on I returned to AWS and was reminded why I left
Render has been excellent replacement, in my experience.
christophilus··on Show HN: I made a Clojure-like language in Go, boots in 7ms
That does look pretty good. I don’t love the mixing of PascalCase / camelCase and snake_case, though.
christophilus··on EU Parliamentary Research Service calls VPNs "a loophole that needs closing"
Parents can protect their children. Source: I’m a parent. My kids haven’t seen porn and can’t access the internet. This doesn’t affect the free exchange of ideas that my fellow countrymen enjoy.

Governments getting involved absolutely, unequivocally will be used to clamp down on the free exchange of ideas.

christophilus··on Permacomputing Principles
The pro-life movement is huge among trad Catholics, and Catholicism is its roots. I think evangelicals came along pretty early. The Republicans aligned naturally, their base being heavily Christian.
christophilus··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
If you hand something off to engineering and they spend three months building the wrong thing, you’ve got a dysfunctional organization.
christophilus··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
> in my debt

Good way of putting it.

christophilus··on The bottleneck was never the code
On desktop, it's fixed to the left of the story, pulsing along the entire time you're trying to read. If you are like me, it will annoy you. I had to switch to reader mode.
christophilus··on Why most product tours get skipped
The difference is TFM doesn’t pop up in my face without me asking for it while I’m trying to do something basic.
christophilus··on How OpenAI delivers low-latency voice AI at scale
Agreed. It’s stressful. I think they need to have an option to adopt a suffix, so they don’t start babbling until there is an “over” followed by a pause like in the old army walkie talkie days.
christophilus··on Kids bypass age verification with fake moustaches
It reminds me of Tipper Gore and her righteous crusade against video games.
christophilus··on Formatting a 25M-line codebase overnight
My guess would be tooling. I think the Ruby formatters are written in Ruby. I’d guess the clang one is written in C.
christophilus··on Over 8M Thermos jars and bottles recalled after 3 people lost vision
Yep. I once had half a bottle of kefir end up all over my kitchen ceiling. After that, I always opened them outside, pointing away from anyone.
christophilus··on The text mode lie: why modern TUIs are a nightmare for accessibility
I like them because they’re easy to run in a container / sandbox.
christophilus··on Nuclear receptor 4A1 linked to health effects of coffee: study
He was suggesting— jokingly— that maybe coffee cancels out the deleterious effects of smoking, because indeed coffee + a cigar or pipe is truly an excellent experience.
christophilus··on A couple million lines of Haskell: Production engineering at Mercury
Agreed. Clojure gets this with Mali and Spec. That said, types are such a productivity boost over time that I think they should only be discarded for very good reasons.
christophilus··on New research suggests people can communicate and practice skills while dreaming
I often wake up realizing I wrote a handful of bugs the day before. They’re obvious to me in the morning even before I sit down and open my laptop.

Sleep is a strange and magical thing.

christophilus··on Apple accidentally left Claude.md files Apple Support app
It’s not that they’ve lost their identity— it’s that… { “error”: “Claude Max limits exceeded” }
christophilus··on CPanel and WHM Authentication Bypass – CVE-2026-41940
Yeah. There are a lot of people saying, “This is why you don’t roll your own…” but if I’d rolled my own, there wouldn’t have been reversible encryption involved, and there certainly wouldn’t have been plain text.
christophilus··on CPanel and WHM Authentication Bypass – CVE-2026-41940
Well, I tend to fall on your side of this, but doing this probably means you’re equally or more insecure and just won’t know it until you’re hacked. That said, I have written my own auth and session layers numerous times. My needs are generally simple, so getting it correct isn’t too hard.

When you pull in a generic auth or session library, you pull in a “can do everything” module rather than a “can do this one specific thing” module. So, your attack surface grows as do your odds of misconfiguration.

christophilus··on Functional programmers need to take a look at Zig
Same. Meta programming is nice when it fits the problem, but most meta programming I’ve seen has been a net negative.

Odin is also my favorite language in its class. It’s genuinely a gem.

christophilus··on Can You Find the Comet?
Agreed. It’s the only solution short of a ban on constellations.
