christophilus··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Dunno. Many designers are pretty bad at UX. They’re OK at aesthetics, but that’s not the same thing.
christophilus··on My server is a phone now
Great post. I’m impressed with your English skills. Turkish is a very different language, so I can’t imagine it’s easy to pick up English. Anyway, you inspired me to try doing this with one of my old devices. Gonna put that on my September hacking list.
christophilus··on Americans are rallying against data centers. Surprisingly few are getting built
I’m fine with datacenters being built as long as we have some rules: they have to be quiet enough to not be audible beyond the border of the land owned by the datacenter. They have to pay for new electrical capacity so that they don’t burden locals with that externality. Really, that’s it. I think most people could get behind that.
christophilus··on Almost no skill required to cook a steak
I found this to be my favorite approach[0]. Also, Lan Lam’s stuff is just generally excellent.

And yes, super easy to make with almost no skill.

christophilus··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
My predictions about everything ever, summarized perfectly. I need an “inverse me ETF”.
christophilus··on Octane – React’s programming model, compiled
Yeah. I thought it sounded like OpenAI more than Claude, though maybe they’ve converged. It’s been a while since I used Claude.
christophilus··on Octane – React's programming model, compiled
Same. I think it’s just a link, and its content took a while to load. Looks like it’s the docs site vs the marketing page.
christophilus··on Show HN: Shitty – fast terminal. Memory-unsafe and faster than yours
Foot is instant. Ghostty takes ages. I don’t know why there’s such a difference, but I can’t use anything slower than Foot now without getting annoyed.
christophilus··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
This just made me think: if Anthropic or OpenAI wanted to get some good will, and burn a bunch more investor funding, they'd provide security audits for the most popular N AUR packages for free as a good-will service.
christophilus··on Dario Amodei's stance on open weights is self-serving and short-sighted
Buffett and Munger, maybe.
christophilus··on Advancing the price-performance frontier with GPT‑5.6
Wow. This is absolutely wild. I didn't expect that.

If we get to anywhere near this speed for the equivalent of the current models... I don't even know what to think about that future.

christophilus··on The Difference Between a Button and a Link
Buttons already have actions and methods and many other useful things: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Reference/...

I don’t see how this proposal is any different than what already exists.

christophilus··on Golang Maps: how Swiss Tables replaced the old bucket design
Reads like GPT. But, it was still interesting to me. I hadn’t heard of Swiss tables before. The article links to the primary sources, to those who want to avoid reading LLM output: https://abseil.io/about/design/swisstables
christophilus··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
An MPA can make as many queries/service requests as it needs to to render the result. Most— the vast majority of SPAs I’ve ever written, maintained, or used— do that from the client, making many requests to render the new route.

The UX for an SPA can indeed be excellent, but the average SPA is worse than the average MPA, in my opinion. It’s just much easier to break things in many subtle ways in an SPA.

christophilus··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
I haven’t used it with htmx, but DOM morphing seems like it’s probably a good solution to this.

christophilus··on Capra, Cribl's Design System
I’ve been working on a similar idea, but focusing on MPA and progressive enhancement. Building MPAs on Bun using Preact as the backend templating engine and focusing on a low-dependency stack.

I used the gov.uk style guides as my inspiration. It’s brought me back in time around 15 years, but the UX has grown on me. It’s also quite fast, thanks to almost no client-side JS.

No idea what I’ll end up doing with it, though. It’s mostly experimental, and very much LLM generated with my steering.

christophilus··on Don't Take the Black Pill [video]
One of my favorite talks.
christophilus··on Buz – A fork of Bun using modern Zig, with sub-1s incremental builds
No. Fast builds are a must for a project like this, in my opinion. This is an important step towards making the project easier to maintain.
christophilus··on Buz – A fork of Bun using modern Zig, with sub-1s incremental builds
It's less than I'd expect, given how Bun was developed. I'm sure there's plenty more of that to be had in that codebase.
christophilus··on Buz – A fork of Bun using modern Zig, with sub-1s incremental builds
With Bun, I have a single dependency which gives me: bundling, runtime, package management, test runner, SQLite, Postgres connectivity, S3 utilities, sane APIs (compare Bun.serve to whatever the heck I had to do in Node), routing…

Basically, Bun is giving us something between Rails and the .Net framework for Typescript. It’s become an (almost) standalone runtime for running low-dependency apps.

christophilus··on Buz – A fork of Bun using modern Zig, with sub-1s incremental builds
Bun, but managed by someone who values code quality? Sign me up. It’s a Herculean task, though.
christophilus··on The startup's Postgres survival guide
Nice. How fast is your home internet connection? I’ve thought about putting an old laptop to this use. But I don’t want my day to day internet to suffer if my site gets traffic spikes. And also, I’m nervous about non-ecc ram.
christophilus··on The startup's Postgres survival guide
Can’t do RLS without a transaction, though, right?
christophilus··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
Because, as you said, this is no longer news. Deepseek was the news. This is just the predictable progress playing out.
christophilus··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
It found a zero-day. If someone non-maliciously breached my systems, I’d be grateful for the free security research.
christophilus··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
Hm. Sounds a lot like interviewing for a software engineering position.
christophilus··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
Well, to play AI advocate, if it wasn’t destructive, you could argue they did huggingface a favor by giving them a free vulnerability scan and improving their security / hardening.
christophilus··on Hardcore IndieWeb: Run your own website 100% independently for only $0.01/day
If they were Windows game developers, they wouldn’t have to touch any of that. I guess it depends on where their interests lie and what platform they developed on.
christophilus··on Everybody's Weirded Out by AI–Except the People Who Foist It on Us
Dunno about that. I can fix a lot more stuff around the house thanks to YouTube. I have picked up a bunch of programming knowledge via the internet that I never would have without it. The internet has delivered on a lot of its promises.
christophilus··on The US grocery slowdown is real
Depends. Russia has a lot of natural resources and some good land. I imagine the world will take its cut as a return on whatever help we render.
