christopher8827··on What do fintech startups use on their back end?
Hey - is this essentially provisioning a bunch of background workers to constantly scan a database table? eg. one worker for each alert (to look for a price). How would someone incorporate this in Rails?
christopher8827··on Cities with the Best Work-Life Balance 2021
heck, 90& of Sydneysiders live in Western Sydney. Its a trek to even get to the CBD.
christopher8827··on Cities with the Best Work-Life Balance 2021
Man, they totally have Sydney wrong. I moved out of Sydney to Melbourne because it was so expensive, it's a never-ending rat race and most of the companies are pretty corporate (meaning a lot of unpaid overtime).
christopher8827··on Ask HN: Are you satisfied with Elixir or do you regret choosing Elixir?
My 2c. I was learning Elixir / Phoenix for a startup but found it was missing way too many libraries & lacked the breadth & depth of the Stack Overflow knowledge base as compared to the Ruby on Rails ecosystem.

It was a cool experiment. Most devs would have learnt other Object Oriented Programming languages but learning Elixir would mean switching to a different paradigm.

I'm a React / Javascript dev with 5+ years experience. I also developed a RoR job board at https://remotefriendly.me & attempted to build a startup this year in the Antler Sydney accelerator. I'm looking interesting projects to work on. I have developed NodeJS API for Slack chatbots for a startup & love learning new technologies such as Svelte. I'm currently freelancing remotely for a VC, who's app tech stack is React, Firebase + Cloud Functions, Stripe, and Webflow. I'm looking to start at end of 2020, so feel free to connect to me.
christopher8827··on Reclaiming Becket: London’s great saint needs a reboot
I was suprised for this to pop up - Becket was such a great film.
christopher8827··on Why I started GigoBooks, and how I got the idea for a startup
Glad to see another aussie founder here!
christopher8827··on Ask HN: Why would one learn Ruby on Rails in 2020?
Many reasons. - Ruby is designed for Programmer Happiness. - Convention over Configuration - Omakase: https://dhh.dk/2012/rails-is-omakase.html - Its an Majestic Monolith: https://m.signalvnoise.com/the-majestic-monolith/ - Tons of libraries
christopher8827··on Ask HN: No major Australian bank even offers an option of 2FA for web, why?
It's because of "Not Invented Here" policies. I have seen some banks use 2FA for internal logins - Westpac uses RSA SecurID tokens.
christopher8827··on Thank HN: You helped me get a new job
Congrats dude!

christopher8827··on Ask HN: Which is the best spiritual book you have read?
I have read the City of God and it's massive. Are you talking about a particular section?
christopher8827··on Ask HN: Which is the best spiritual book you have read?
The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything by the Revered James Martin, SJ. Pretty awesome book on Catholic/Jesuit spirituality, though the actual writer is pretty liberal in real-life.

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius if you are into Stoicism.

I wouldn't directly dive into the Bible cause its rather thick, and confusing especially the Old Testament, except maybe the Gospels for a start -

christopher8827··on Fruit machine (homosexuality test)
But those lines seem to be re-drew every few decades. It's hard to tell what currently is considered sexual deviancy be permitted in the future.
christopher8827··on What's the hardest part in the job searching process in the tech industry?
Really? I went to uni in Australia but I get passed on by HR because they are looking for someone with ‘US experience’.
christopher8827··on What's the hardest part in the job searching process in the tech industry?
When recruiters barely take a look at you because you didn't go to Stanford or some elite uni.

Job interviews with too many interview rounds.

christopher8827··on The Anti-College Is on the Rise
Good. I think the university system is outdated and there should be other institutions to train people for the workforce.
christopher8827··on I was wrong about the iPad Pro
No 1 thing the iPad needs to do is coding. Its got such a long battery life, I would have loved to use it to make code edits on the go. That's pretty much my main grip with it at the moment.

christopher8827··on Is it still worth spending $40K+ on a CompSci degree in the age of self taught?
Following. I wonder if there's any difference in the type of fields people enter in compared with CompSci majors vs self-taught coders.
christopher8827··on Not enough jobs for science graduates challenges STEM hype
Just out of curiosity, why not move to the US now? I know a ton of friends that went over once they did their Bachelors.
christopher8827··on Not enough jobs for science graduates challenges STEM hype
As a developer in Australia, this is true... there are literally no jobs for people doing a science degree. Even doing a CS degree can be pretty shaky - most businesses/companies here are just looking to get a basic app out, and something like Machine Learning / AI is just not required as of yet. That's why I'm looking to move to the US for better opportunities...

christopher8827··on YC Interviews in India
It would be great if YC expanded to the Asia-Pacific region... somewhere easy for Aussies to reach/apply/interview like Singapore.
christopher8827··on Is the Bay Area pushing people to the breaking point?
Thanos?
christopher8827··on React Native Open Source Update
Hey, it depends on what you are building. I have found with React Native + Expo is that you can mostly avoid native code until you need something that isn't supported by React Native (eg. payment integration) - in that case you will need to eject the app. You would have to manage routing on the app, etc.

If your background is in web dev, building a PWA should be much easier.

christopher8827··on Ask HN: Co-found with someone very vocal about his politically incorrect views?
It depends... I think the Paypal Mafia had politically opposite views and it worked out because they didn't let it affect work. I think the most infamous example would be Peter Thiel and Keith Rabois: "Rabois came to Thiel's attention after he was found outside an instructor's home, shouting homophobic slurs and the suggestion that the instructor "die of AIDS.".
christopher8827··on What should I prepare for before moving to the Bay Area?
Nope - but E3 should be easy to get.
