Me:

I work at the engineering firm, Exaltation of Larks, and at the Droplabs network of coworking spaces, which are two companies I co-founded.

In my spare time I'm a public speaker on open source software, high performance websites and internet security, and am a startup mentor and Drupal community manager and organizer.

My new company is Solar Ignition, a venture capital seed fund and accelerator program. We back entrepreneurs working on big ideas and values-based businesses using open source principles.

christefano··on What’s New in Thunderbird 78
Thanks for the recommendation. When looking for screenshots I found Tyler Roland’s review and follow up and am intrigued.

MailMate’s correspondence viewer looks great. The conversations add-on for Thunderbird keeps locking up for me, even when I’m in the middle of writing an email. Maddening.

christefano··on TurboTax Sucks Ass
From Hasan Minhaj and the team at Patriot Act on Netflix:

“TurboTax and other tax prep companies misled millions of Americans into paying to file their taxes even though they could do it for free. That sucks ass. … We think it should be easy to file your taxes - even if you still use TurboTax. … File for free by clicking the links below.”

christefano··on Help me with ideas to monetize my $10k DigitalOcean free credits
If you have credits to spare, check out the Computing for COVID project:

https://marketplace.digitalocean.com/apps/computing-for-covi...

“Computing for COVID is a way for anyone to fire up a cloud computer that contributes immediately in the search for finding drug targets. This app allows you to support researchers at the University of Washington's Baker Lab in their computational requirements as part of their Coronavirus Response.”

christefano··on Coronavirus: Dexamethasone proves first life-saving drug?
I thought that name was familiar. It’s the miracle drug called “dex” and hyped in the Chris O’Donnell movie, Vertical Limit.

My bet is Vertical Limit is the next movie to trend (after Contagion): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_Limit

“Your Patreon is a business. Act like it.”

Ouch. Marketing copy like this doesn’t endear me to /any/ product or service. Unless (maybe) it’s intentionally trying to be cheeky.

christefano··on FSF gives freedom-respecting videoconferencing to all associate members
> The platform we use to offer ethical videoconferencing access is Jitsi Meet. We used it previously to stream and record our annual LibrePlanet conference for an online audience after the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel the in-person event. Choosing Jitsi Meet is only the first step to addressing the problems posed to user freedom by services like Zoom and Facebook. Even users that start a call via a server running Jitsi could still be vulnerable if that server depends on or shares information with third parties. The FSF made changes to the code we are running, in order to enhance privacy and software freedom, and published the source code, to motivate others to host their own instances. The FSF instance does not use any third party servers for network initialization, and does not recommend or link to any potentially problematic services.

Curious what code changes the FSF made to their copy of Jitsi Meet. Is anyone able to report on this?

christefano··on Brave Zoom Competitor
According to the Brave privacy policy Together uses 8x8’s servers, so my guess is that this is using Jitsi Meet.

The last time I looked through the Jitsi Meet config files, by default it uses Google’s TURN servers to route the calls. Not sure how Brave Together is doing it.

christefano··on Email based PGP encrypted chat
Same here - it got stuck at 96% (whatever that means), but it worked when I hit “Log in” the second time.

Strangely, the setup screen doesn’t seem to differentiate between “automatic” (i.e. “simple”) and “advanced” setup and filling out the fields is necessary for both when using the advanced setup mode.

christefano··on Email based PGP encrypted chat
> Unfortunately, just reading the FAQ a few red flags. It doesn’t allow importing encrypted keys. This is an automatic “nope” for me.

This is answered in the FAQ:

Can I re-use my existing private key?

Yes. The best way is to send an Autocrypt Setup Message from the other e-mail client. Look for something like Start Autocrypt Setup Transfer in the settings of the other client and follow the instructions shown there.

Alternatively, you can import the key manually in “Advanced settings / Manage private keys”. Caution: Make sure the key is not protected by a password, or remove the password beforehand.

If you don’t have a key or don’t even know you would need one - don’t worry: Delta Chat generates one as needed, you don’t have to hit a button for it.

christefano··on Unc0ver Jailbreak for iOS 11.0 to 13.5
This actually used to be possible (and may still be?) with the iUsers app in Cydia. That was maybe 10 years ago, though.

I’d jailbreak my iPad Pro immediately if I could get multiuser support. I really hope the multiuser stuff from tvOS 13 or Apple’s implementation for education accounts make it into iPad OS.

christefano··on Where there’s smoke – the cigarettes-and-Covid story is growing harder to ignore
FTA:

“The different endpoints suggest that nicotine might be lowering viral load, or something of that nature, and nicotine is known to have some funky immunological effects. But the benefit, if it exists, can’t be attributed to nicotine until that’s established independently.”

Fortunately this might be easy to test given that transdermal nicotine patches can deliver nicotine without the associated smoke, tar, morning cough, etc. that the article mentions in passing. I’m curious how this plays out.

christefano··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
I set this up yesterday, and it was a breeze.

Just had to be sure to omit the B2 external storage folder from the backups on my Nextcloud server.

Now only if Virtualmin (YC ‘08) supported virtual server backups to S3-compatible B2 cloud storage… There’s an open ticket for this at https://www.virtualmin.com/node/65024

christefano··on Proof of concept: end-to-end encryption in Jitsi Meet
Sad to see this is dependent on an extension to WebRTC that’s (currently) Chrome / Chromium-only. It’s still a proposed API, and I don’t see when this will be supported by any other browsers.
christefano··on WeWork sells Meetup
This is much less the case now that anyone, be it a company or organization or even a solo organizer, can link a Facebook group to a public Facebook page. (It isn’t immediately obvious how to do that, though, which perpetuates the discovery problem.)
christefano··on WeWork sells Meetup
I think you’re conflating the success of Meetup with the success of individual meetup groups. In the time the 20 groups you mentioned grew quiet and languished I’m sure Meetup signed up hundreds if not thousands of new meetup organizers.

(It’s also ~$200 / year, not $300 / year, but now I’m just seeming pedantic.)

christefano··on Meetup Spins Off from WeWork
Still a misleading title. Meetup isn’t being spun off. CEO David Siegel even sent out an email this morning (I’m an organizer who pays $200 / year for the privilege) with the same title.

Meetup was acquired by AlleyCorp and “other private investors” according the the TechCrunch article.

christefano··on Zoom’s Use of Facebook’s SDK in iOS Client
It’s an opt-out:

“You can opt out of this use or your Apple relationship information by emailing our privacy team at dpo@apple.com with the subject line ‘Apple Relationship Data and Apple Card.’”

christefano··on Jitsi Meet: An open source alternative to Zoom
What server-specific upgrades did you do? How did you tune it?
christefano··on Jitsi Meet: An open source alternative to Zoom
You could use LDAP, but really the default configuration allows for Prosody commands, e.g. prosodyctl adduser user@example.com

What I did was set up a vanilla Jitsi Meet instance (on DigitalOcean) and then create a shared user / pass per room share with my team. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
