Computers at RadioPublic. Bad takes my own.

Basically embarrassed by everything I said more than a few years ago. This statement, however, is perennial.

chrisrhoden··on Stripe Atlas is nothing but a bad marriage
And this is over the lifetime of the account!
chrisrhoden··on An employer asked me to do a HackerRank test. Here's my alternative proposal.
> They have the job, you want it.

By definition, if they have a job, they want to fill it with a qualified person. Jobs aren't (usually) charities to the person working.

chrisrhoden··on Dear Apple, please fix notifications
Android has more notification control, but I think the main reason that this doesn't feel like as much of an issue on Android is that the back button is on the bottom of the screen and the Up button isn't used nearly as frequently.
chrisrhoden··on Rust for Rubyists
The section titled "Implicit returns and expressions" purports to contrast the two when as far as I can tell they work identically.

In fact, the article specifically calls out that in Rust, even if expressions have a value, which is also true in Ruby, every expression has a value (though it is sometimes nil).

chrisrhoden··on The sequence 1 1 ∞ 5 6 3 3 3
I'm not a mathematician but I tend to avoid using the word infinity and prefer "infinite value" as I used above.
chrisrhoden··on The sequence 1 1 ∞ 5 6 3 3 3
As explained in the linked page, the third value in the sequence is infinite. The fourth in the sequence is five.
chrisrhoden··on Update: We Will Replace Your Logitech Harmony Links
I think you are confusing the link and the hub. The link has no home automation functions and hasn't been sold for 4 years.

That said, they badly mishandled this situation, and the fact that there was so much product confusion (people thought they had just bought a link, when they had bought a hub, and people who bought a link even when it was released 6 years ago have a reasonable expectation for it to keep working) and I am glad they have shifted their position.

chrisrhoden··on HTTP 103 – An HTTP Status Code for Indicating Hints
Idempotent just means that you can do it as many times as you want (n) and the state will remain the same, for n >= 1.
chrisrhoden··on A Mac Podcast App You Can't Have
It's the first recommendation that the article mentions and then dismisses.

Everything our stack does is important, but none of it is precious. We're looking to pick up some serious speed in the coming months.

We're only set up to handle employees in the US right now, but will try to work something out for an exceptional candidate.

chrisrhoden··on Disapproval of FCC regulations a significant blow against privacy protection
He came around, and then was a reasonably good champion. Let's live in a world where people aren't permanently branded with temporary positions.
chrisrhoden··on Next.js 2.0
The related articles and comments are not rendered until after the page is readable. If they had to be rendered on the server, it would cause the article to take longer to be readable.
chrisrhoden··on Next.js 2.0
The page you link to on Medium renders after less than 100KB have been downloaded with an unprimed cache.

Javascript is not required to read it. Javascript is used to provide extra functionality outside of the download / render cycle, to speed the experience of the page up, and to make future navigation faster.

I understand where you are coming from, but you picked a bad example.

chrisrhoden··on Stories that Hacker News removes from the front page
The article is about posts that never receive the "flagged" designation.
chrisrhoden··on Large Applications on AWS Lambda
Have you done any benchmarking on the impact this has on cold boot performance? I'd considered using this technique in a non-Zappa context but was worried that the performance would be an issue (I ultimately was able to get my package smaller in other ways).
chrisrhoden··on Democracy Index 2016
What you're describing is the first half of what I said. And you're right, there has consistently been a sizable percentage of the electorate who doesn't trust the government.

What's relatively new is that now, the President is asking people who are on his side to distrust the rest of the government.

chrisrhoden··on Democracy Index 2016
I'll assume you downvoted me because you think that the article is wrong and not because you think I am wrong in my assessment of what the article is saying.

I don't disagree that the media at large would have preferred the other candidate. That would be true if the media was a perfect statistical representation of the country, and the media is not, it's largely focused in population centers, where the preference was overwhelming.

chrisrhoden··on Democracy Index 2016
> because of a further erosion of trust in government and elected officials there.

Guessing it is actually a combination of very low approval ratings across the board and the fact that the guy who was elected is encouraging distrust in the system.

So if you don't approve of / trust him, you don't trust the government. If you do trust him, you don't trust the government.

chrisrhoden··on Syndicated.media, community standards group for podcasting
I am so excited to see this happening with as much momentum and industry interest as it seems to have. For various reasons, the standards used by podcasts have largely remained static over the last decade. While this has meant a relatively stable platform for building interesting experiences, it has meant that certain things have been impossible without defining new, proprietary APIs.

Organizations like Podlove and MediaRSS have made serious efforts and R&D into improving the situation and addressing specific technical needs, but without significant industry buy-in, they've faced a bit of a chicken and egg problem. By getting many small and medium sized industry players to band together, I think Syndicated.Media represents a serious opportunity to create a critical mass which will drive the possibilities for user experience forward.

Disclosure: I co-founded RadioPublic, one of the companies listed as a partner.

chrisrhoden··on Nintendo Switch
Your memory of Morrowind is way off. It's fairly common to remember games as looking far better than they did. This looks competitive with games that came out just a couple of years ago on the latest generation of consoles.
chrisrhoden··on Use "App folder" access type instead of "Full Dropbox"
which is encrypted.
chrisrhoden··on AdNauseam Banned from the Google Web Store
They might! The case they would have to make seems pretty shaky to me, but legislators have done some things that seem pretty ridiculous to me in the past, and I am sure there is plenty more coming.

That doesn't make acting in such blatantly bad faith until you are able to take legal action forgivable.

chrisrhoden··on AdNauseam Banned from the Google Web Store
As far as I know, there are laws against smashing up a bunch of merchandise you haven't paid for, and the department store would probably press charges rather than taking advantage of the fact that they're part of a conglomerate providing medical insurance to refuse coverage to the protestors on shaky grounds.

chrisrhoden··on Show HN: FreePoll – Ranked Voting for Teams
I'm very curious personally what is meant by "No permanent database" - are you writing the responses to S3?
chrisrhoden··on Reddit Gearing Up to Ban or Quarantine the Alt Right Subreddit
Reddit is under no obligation to support, nurture, or pay for the resources required to keep this up. They are under no obligation to implicitly condone this content, as they have taken on an editorial role in the past and now anything they don't ban is in contrast to those things they have. As you pointed out, it's the web. There are many web hosts that will refuse you service for hosting pornography. That doesn't prevent anyone from finding one that will allow it.
chrisrhoden··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
> Please find me a single example of this.

Please don't hold me to a standard that was not requested. I don't believe there is any evidence that this was drawn out; as far as I can tell, many of the statements are simply recordings of town hall meetings.

chrisrhoden··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
http://tal.fm/600/1

It's a pretty central issue right now.

chrisrhoden··on Harvard Square Classic Cafe Algiers Closing Forever Sunday
You'll be glad to know its (well earned) reputation for unreliable service survived to the end. Algiers was an institution and will be sorely missed.
chrisrhoden··on Why Podcasting Still Needs RSS
It is an interesting thought. I think it's hard for me to imagine the benefits of moving on from XML overcoming the pain of supporting both formats for literally everyone involved (producers and apps), and RSS is, despite its shortcomings, quite mature. If you are proposing hanging additional data off of RSS with a link but continuing to fetch the RSS for basic episode data, I think it is self evident why that is fraught. And if you are suggesting having an alternative representation, I guess I worry about reliving the pain of the early days, with lots of format fighting and incomplete / incorrect implementations.

How do you see this working?
