chrisdbaldwin··on iOS 11 Location Privacy: "Only While Using" is now always an option for users
a decentralized version would be cool
chrisdbaldwin··on The asymmetry in storytelling between math and the other sciences
The real tragedy is that pure mathematics is hidden from students for too long and many opt-out of that path in favor of "Actuarial Science" and applied maths.

Real talk: pure maths was way more fun, interesting, and applicable to my life as a software engineer than all the applied math and modelling that I wrote/learned/etc. Pure mathematics expanded my mind unlike any other subject matter.

Irony being News Corp (owner of Fox) bought MySpace in 2005.

chrisdbaldwin··on Trolls are winning the internet, technologists say
Sorry to burst your bubble, but citing your experience with people is equivalent to trolling. Your anecdotal evidence doesn't agree with what's been studied in Behavioral Economics.

The problem is not that a tiny minority are untrustworthy; the problem is that a large majority lie (a little bit) often and by nature.

chrisdbaldwin··on Ask HN: How do you know when you're ready to move into a senior role?
when you're also mentoring
chrisdbaldwin··on NASA’s $8B plan to find extraterrestrial life
We're a boring planet in the sticks, and we poisoned our planet with radiation. I'd bet we're in a list of planets to avoid.
chrisdbaldwin··on Why Ever Stop Playing Video Games
See: Killer Queen Arcade. The underground competitive arcade scene you (probably) don't know about.
chrisdbaldwin··on Beating the World’s Best at Super Smash Bros. with Deep Reinforcement Learning
Likely due to the advanced, non-intuitive mechanics that have been discovered over the years. The entry barrier may be low, but the skill cap is high.
chrisdbaldwin··on Steam needs to stop asking its customers to fix its problems
Ding ding ding! Each one of those trading cards facilitates trade. When there is more trade, there are more transactions for valve to skim. It's simple broker economics, and it works great for everyone involved.
chrisdbaldwin··on Amazon Restaurants
Their marketing people are doing fine. This service isn't available everywhere, and when it was made available in my city, my local network quickly learned about it and started using it.
chrisdbaldwin··on Google has reportedly stopped developing its own self-driving car
Google will want ad revenue from the captive audience in the self driving car. Control the self driving car ecosystem in the long term and avoid the cost of manufacturing and compliance in the short. I like the assumption that they will "come back" into the space, because it's a great play.
chrisdbaldwin··on Soylent Thinks It Found What Was Making People Sick: Algae
>The population at large has a very poor level of education

We have a general education crisis going on in the United States. We've got some of the best propaganda in the world, and it's making us sick.

chrisdbaldwin··on Video Games Are Boring
Someone doesn't know about Killer Queen yet ;)
chrisdbaldwin··on LinkedIn launches Salary to chart what we earn
And who is to stop a software company from doing the opposite? If they want lower wages, they could spam a region with fake workers with lower wages.
chrisdbaldwin··on Why Do Americans Stink at Math?
> The teachers consistently failed their students in class, by not providing them with the very basic math skills and confidence that they needed to solve more complex problems.

Finding a good math teacher in America is difficult because the good math students rarely become teachers.

chrisdbaldwin··on If elected, Clinton would support an “Encryption Commission” to help feds
Probably the encryption one. But you know that your question is silly.
chrisdbaldwin··on Cambodias 2nd-richest man donates 98% of his fortune to the poor in his hometown
This is inspiring; thank you for sharing.

chrisdbaldwin··on Barack Obama: America Will Take the Giant Leap to Mars
We need to be a peaceful species if we ever hope to commune with ETIs and unlock the inner mysteries of the universe. According to Edgar Mitchell, the ETIs will not tolerate violence. Zero point energy is too powerful to entrust to warmongering space pirates (like us).
chrisdbaldwin··on Twitter's Dorsey Rallies Staff Around Independent Strategy in Internal Memo
It's just mass texting.
chrisdbaldwin··on Brain waves can be used to detect potentially harmful personal information
Occultists hate her! This one weird trick to read brain waves they don't want you to know!
chrisdbaldwin··on Is developer compensation becoming bimodal?
Yes, it happened. Thanks Steve!
chrisdbaldwin··on Is developer compensation becoming bimodal?
The group projects of 6 people with one person at computer while everyone else watches for an few hours, then it's done. Four people doing nothing, one person coding, and one person searching the internet for help. Typically the four doing nothing are having an existential panic attack because they realize how useless they are being, or maybe they don't. Who cares? They're about to get an 'A'.
chrisdbaldwin··on Machine Learning and Ketosis
Stop eating carbs and see what happens. It's surprisingly easy to end up underweight when sugar isn't present.
chrisdbaldwin··on We’re in a Low-Growth World. How Did We Get Here?
"things you make today are going to break down, wear out, or become obsolete thirty years from now."

Planned obsolescence started not too long ago and everything now needs replacing much earlier than thirty years. We can see its inefficiency in every industries generated from this money printing scheme. Turning what once was considered permanent and high quality will now break and need replacing.

Everybody is doing it, and it's hard to stop, but it probably should stop.

chrisdbaldwin··on Not Saying Winter Is Coming, but Where’s Your Coat?
As someone who has recently needed said 6 months in the bank, I agree completely, yes - you need it. I burned out, but I couldn't have done something about it (quit) without that cushion.
chrisdbaldwin··on Ask HN: What was your “why didn't I start doing this sooner” moment?
Leaving negative people and environments behind and moving on with life.
