chris_wot··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
You can't link your government ID to your social media account. The legislation doesn't allow social media companies to gather this data. It's specifically not allowed.

In other words: this legislation is useless, and entirely stupid, and kids will bypass it trivially. Teenagers are exceptionally good at bypassing that which they find stupid, or gets in their way of what they consider to be fun, or a right.

You can still open them. More than I can say for Office.

My favorite reaction to today’s news is this one-liner from a guy on Twitter/X: “The average IQ of both companies has increased.”

My friend, that was NZ prime minister Robert Muldoon who was quoted as saying “every time a New Zealander emigrates to sun themselves on the beaches of Bondi, the average IQ of both countries increases.”

chris_wot··on The fuck off contact page
There is also the “Fuck off support ticket”. I got this from FreshService - they changed the way they did loan requests in such a way that you could loan out one item twice with the status of delivered on both requests. So then you have two people who have been delivered the same item, which is clearly impossible.

Anyway, after arguing with them from for months, they acknowledge it as a bug. I wait for it to be fixed, months roll away. Then they tell me it has been lodged as an “enhancement request”.

Don’t deal with FreshService. Needless to say, we are soon to be leaving them.

Do you have a list of such managers?
chris_wot··on Crypto hoarders dump tokens as shares tumble
That's kind of the point... and hardly surprising, you don't think at all.

Be careful, the grass is greener in other countries, but not perfect. I feel sorry if you live in the U.S.
chris_wot··on How did the Win 95 user interface code get brought to the Windows NT code base?
Don’t they get emailed patch from git? Sorry if I’m super ignorant here, it’s interesting to me if they do!
chris_wot··on How did the Win 95 user interface code get brought to the Windows NT code base?
Amazingly, explorer.exe still freezes up to this very day. Bravo, Microsoft. Never change.
chris_wot··on Doge 'doesn't exist' with eight months left on its charter
Which is why we need to get a list of names of all the DOGE guys. There wasn't many of them.
chris_wot··on Crypto got everything it wanted. Now it's sinking
Well, I was referring to its social value. A positive value solely for criminals is hardly an excellent economic indicator and I’m a bit surprised you would argue otherwise.
chris_wot··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
I’m not following your objection either.
chris_wot··on Is Matrix Multiplication Ugly?
Can you give an example of when it is not appropriate?
chris_wot··on Is Matrix Multiplication Ugly?
That’s the opinion of one person. There are many mathematicians who find beauty in the maths they are studying.
chris_wot··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
Not really. If GrapheneOS feels they will be prosecuted in a particular country, then they don’t need to allow participation in that country. It’s their choose and right to do so.

They have no obligation to do otherwise. - ~~~~

chris_wot··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
Because they would be violating the laws of another country. The fastest way to prevent this is to prevent access from France. The same way it is being done with the UK.
chris_wot··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
If they consider the country is making laws they can't accept, then the honourable thing is to no longer allow participation within that country.
chris_wot··on Dr Matthew Garrett v Dr Roy Schestowitz and Anor
I feel for Matthew. Apparently there is an entire chapter about me on an anti-Wikipedia website that advances some quite literally absurd claims. I’ve been aware of it for some time, being simultaneously amused and disturbed by the unhinged nature of both the material and the originator.

If this is how I feel about a discredited and largely uninfluential website, one can only imagine how Matthew feels given how widely read the unhinged claims on tuxmachines were against him.

chris_wot··on Microsoft AI CEO pushes back against critics after recent Windows AI backlash
The thing that our management likes about co-pilot is that the data stays with us. We can't say that about ChatGPT.
chris_wot··on Microsoft AI CEO pushes back against critics after recent Windows AI backlash
When Microsoft updated office.com to immediately bring up a copilot prompt, and made it harder for me to find the menu items, I was pretty annoyed.

Foisting AI on people in the way they have means we lose a bit more control, for a feature we don't want. There is a certain level of AI burnout in the market - not every product needs AI. In fact, if a vendor says they have "AI" in their product, I immediately ignore that aspect and ask even more questions about their actual capabilities. Often they are hiding things behind an AI smokescreen.

chris_wot··on Britney Spears' Guide to Semiconductor Physics (2000)
There used to be a series of network posts by the "Router God". They went missing, and someone resurrected a bunch of them. Sadly, the article "7 of 9 on OSPF" has left us for good.
