chris_mahan··on OpenStreetMap is now navigation-ready
I used Google Maps in Japan in January 2014. It worked perfectly.
chris_mahan··on How did we get so busy?
Because I have a 8 year-old boy, and a wife who takes care of him well.

I want him to have a great education, wide knowledge and experience, and be ready to face life well, be kind to others, be equipped to work hard and make good money, be a good husband and a good father.

That takes lots of time and money, and is completely worth it.

chris_mahan··on Poll: What OS do you use on your primary computer?
"my" primary computer is my android phone, nowadays.

At work, windows box. At home, I have a windows computer, which I use maybe 2 hours a week. Then I have an android smart phone, which I use 2-4 hours per day.

Which one is my primary computer?

That's what you get with term limits.
chris_mahan··on Scientific Python tips and tricks
Yes, I did. However, as I work behind the corporate firewall, I was unable to download the .exe files on Christoph's site.

I hear you on the Linux business, and that's what I use at home and elsewhere, but it's not an option at the office.

chris_mahan··on Scientific Python tips and tricks
the pip install scipy fails with:

numpy.distutils.system_info.BlasNotFoundError: Blas (http://www.netlib.org/blas/) libraries not found. Directories to search for the libraries can be specifies in the numpy/distutils/site.cfg file (section [blas]) or by setting the BLAS environment variable.

I know this isn't stackoverflow, so no further info needed.

Needless to say, going down the netlib.org/blas/ is quite brutal on windows...

chris_mahan··on Scientific Python tips and tricks
Is there a trick to installing scipy on windows7 without admin rights and on a standard Python 3.3?

I went all the way to MinGW, but fell apart at the fortran stuff.

chris_mahan··on What web developers thought of in the noughties as being MVC doesn't scale
I upvoted you and I agree with you.

On my own web site, I'm on a hunt for the remnants of any CSS and javascript (mostly google site metrics blurbs) to leave only pristine and validating HTML5.

With links that work.

Alternatively, the video should be made available for download as a file.
chris_mahan··on Can This Web Be Saved? Mozilla Accepts DRM, and We All Lose
As far as I am concerned, video should be delivered to vlc via httpstreaming.

then, no browser involved.

chris_mahan··on Can This Web Be Saved? Mozilla Accepts DRM, and We All Lose
The web is finished.

On to the next thing!

(I'm sooo glad my web writings are in plain text files rather than in other people's mysql databases)

chris_mahan··on U.S. Students from Educated Families Lag in International Tests
I bet they don't fail at Minecraft.
chris_mahan··on Are You Really Gluten-Intolerant? Maybe Not
Perhaps, but it's another test I have to pay for, so.

(health insurance may pay some, but I'll still have a bill in 3 months staring at me asking for money.)

chris_mahan··on Are You Really Gluten-Intolerant? Maybe Not
I do, and I have no issue with them. I eat lots of apples, sugar, broccoli, mushroom, and cheese. Daily. I eat goat yogurt (I like the taste better) but I eat some regular yogurt too. I typically don't drink milk (taste again) and eat almond and coconut milk instead. (Trader Joe's gets lots of my business)

I eat very few processed food, canned food.

I eat all fruit (except kiwi--i get irritable bumps on my tongue), meats, cheeses, vegetables, rice, potatoes, dairy products, wine, and non-beer, non whiskey alcohol. (Also, some Shoju is made from wheat, so I only drink those from sugar cane, potato, sweet potato, etc).

I eat very little fried foods. (Although I won't pass up french fries on occasion).

chris_mahan··on Are You Really Gluten-Intolerant? Maybe Not
I went gluten-free 2 years ago and all my symptoms went away, I feel better, have lots of energy, etc.

I did not take a test, but my (non-alternative) internal medicine doctor told me to go on the gluten free-diet after I explained (in gory details) my symptoms.

Is the test really necessary then? Really?

chris_mahan··on Tesla's relative asks Elon Musk for a donation to finish the Tesla Museum
I'm sure there are many other things to do with $8 million at Tesla now than build a museum. In 5-10 years, though, if the company makes it that far, there will be plenty of money for that. just be patient.
chris_mahan··on Lectures Aren't Just Boring, They're Ineffective, Too
When I was in college, I found the evening classes were older people who really wanted to be there and learn. I ended up always selecting evening. At community college especially. There was nearly always 15% of the class that was professionals continuing their education.
chris_mahan··on International Day Against DRM
I actually just buy paper books. I've never bought ebooks or pdf.
chris_mahan··on Popular fish oil study deeply flawed, new research says
The more I know about science, the more I understand that there's so much we don't know that there's very little we can say we know for sure, if any.

chris_mahan··on 2048, success and me
My son asked me yesterday if he could play 2048 on android. (I showed him the js version on my computer)

I hope there is the option to tilt the phone to make the tiles slide...

chris_mahan··on High-Tech Push Has Board Games Rolling Again
My son (9 next month) loves playing Munchkins, Risk, Monopoly, Settlers of Catan. We've also played Puerto Rico, but it's not very fun with only two players.
chris_mahan··on Observations of an Internet Middleman
I want enough bandwidth to stream three HD 1080p movies at the same time (there are three people in my house) with enough left over for VOIP Phone and normal internet. I currently pay $80/month for that. ($50 for internet, 28+change for VOIP). I am willing to pay $120/month (that's frankly $4/day, not enough to really matter) for that. Can I buy it? No. Because no competition.

Why? Because utility monopoly. Why? Because lawyers and lobbyists and clueless and corrupt politicians.

Any question?
